Posterior Cervical Spine Crisscross Fixation: Biomechanical Evaluation, Joseph F. Cusick, Frank A. Pintar, Joseph S. Cheng, Jason I. Lifshutz, Narayan Yoganandan

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Biomechanical/anatomic limitations may limit the successful implantation, maintenance, and risk acceptance of posterior cervical plate/rod fixation for one stage decompression-fusion. A method of posterior fixation (crisscross) that resolves biomechanical deficiencies of previous facet wiring techniques and not reliant upon screw implantation has been devised. The biomechanical performance of the new method of facet fixation was compared to the traditional lateral mass plate/screw fixation method.

Methods

Thirteen human cadaver spine segments (C2-T1) were tested under flexion-compression loading and four were evaluated additionally under pure-moment load. Preparations were evaluated in a sequence of surgical alterations with intact, laminectomy, lateral mass plate/screw …

BACKGROUND

Fractional anisotropy (FA) of the high cervical cord correlates with upper limb function in acute cervical cord injury. We investigated the correlation between preoperative FA at the level of maximal compression and functional recovery in a group of patients after decompressive surgery for cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM).

OBJECTIVE

To determine the usefulness of FA as a biomarker for severity of CSM and as a prognostic biomarker for improvement after surgery.

METHODS

Patients received diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scans preoperatively. FA values of the whole cord cross-section at the level of maximal compression and upper cervical cord (C1-2) were calculated. …

Automatic Segmentation Of Trees In Dynamic Outdoor Environments, Amy Tabb, Henry P. Medeiros Jun 2018

Automatic Segmentation Of Trees In Dynamic Outdoor Environments, Amy Tabb, Henry P. Medeiros

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Segmentation in dynamic outdoor environments can be difficult when the illumination levels and other aspects of the scene cannot be controlled. Specifically in orchard and vineyard automation contexts, a background material is often used to shield a camera's field of view from other rows of crops. In this paper, we describe a method that uses superpixels to determine low texture regions of the image that correspond to the background material, and then show how this information can be integrated with the color distribution of the image to compute optimal segmentation parameters to segment objects of interest. Quantitative and qualitative experiments …

Do Nir Spectra Collected From Laboratory-Reared Mosquitoes Differ From Those Collected From Wild Mosquitoes?, Masabho Peter Milali, Maggy T. Sikulu-Lord, Samson Sifael Kiware, Floyd E. Dowell, Richard J. Povinelli, George F. Corliss May 2018

Do Nir Spectra Collected From Laboratory-Reared Mosquitoes Differ From Those Collected From Wild Mosquitoes?, Masabho Peter Milali, Maggy T. Sikulu-Lord, Samson Sifael Kiware, Floyd E. Dowell, Richard J. Povinelli, George F. Corliss

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a high throughput technique that measures absorbance of specific wavelengths of light by biological samples and uses this information to classify the age of lab-reared mosquitoes as younger or older than seven days with an average accuracy greater than 80%. For NIRS to estimate ages of wild mosquitoes, a sample of wild mosquitoes with known age in days would be required to train and test the model. Mark-release-recapture is the most reliable method to produce wild-caught mosquitoes of known age in days. However, it is logistically demanding, time inefficient, subject to low recapture rates, …

Human motion analysis is a tool used to understand orthopaedic disabilities in children and to plan and monitor treatment strategies. It enables clinicians to quantitatively describe rehabilitative progress, plan surgeries, and conduct research. While this technology is prevalent in major academic medical centers, access is lacking in many regions throughout the world. This paper presents a novel approach to offer more accessible technology at greatly reduced cost. Current applications are underway in the Philippines, Mexico, and Colombia. Through international partnerships, improvements in clinical care, medical education, and research have been observed.

Uncertainty Aware Mapping Of Embedded Systems For Reliability, Performance, And Energy, Wenkai Guan, Milad Ghorbani Moghaddam, Cristinel Ababei

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Duo to technology downscaling, embedded systems have increased in complexity and heterogeneity. Increasingly large process, voltage, and temperature variations negatively affect the design and optimization process of these systems. These factors contribute to increased uncertainties that in turn undermine the accuracy and effectiveness of traditional design approaches. In this paper, we formulate the problem of uncertainty aware mapping for multicore embedded systems as a multi-objective optimization problem. We present a solution to this problem that integrates uncertainty models as a new design methodology constructed with Monto Carlo and evolutionary algorithms. The methodology is uncertainty aware because it is able to …

Driver Responses To Graphic-Aided Portable Changeable Message Signs In Highway Work Zones, Yilei Huang, Yong Bai

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Portable changeable message signs (PCMSs) have been employed in highway work zones as temporary traffic control devices. Various studies showed that adding graphics to PCMS messages can provide advantages to traditional text messages, such as increasing legibility and improving the understanding of elderly drivers. This article synthesizes the findings of a two-phase research project aimed to investigate driver responses to graphic-aided PCMSs. Different text and graphic-aided PCMSs representing roadwork and flagger were set up in the upstream of highway work zones, and speed data of more than 2,700 vehicles were collected with a series of five speed sensors to determine …

Experimental Validation Of External Load Effects For Micro-Contacts Under Low Frequency, Low Amplitude Alternating Current (Ac) Test Conditions, Protap Mahanta, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Dushyant Tomer

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The use of micro-contacts has been demonstrated in various radio frequency (RF) applications. However, the premature failure of such devices under alternating current (AC) operations is still a hurdle to further development. In this work, modified gray scale lithography is performed to fabricate two types of gold–gold (Au–Au) micro-contacts: hemispherical-planar and hemispherical-2D pyramid. The performance of these devices was investigated under low frequency, low amplitude AC conditions with external circuit loads. A custom-made experimental setup which uses various load configurations, controls the frequency of the applied voltage and modifies the cycle rate of switch operation to obtain the contact resistance …

Remote Vibration Estimation Using Displaced-Phase-Center Antenna Sar For Strong Clutter Environments, Justin B. Campbell, Francisco Pérez, Qi Wang, Balasubramaniam Santhanam, Ralf Dunkel, Armin W. Doerry, Thomas Atwood, Majeed M. Hayat

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

It has been previously demonstrated that it is possible to perform remote vibrometry using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) in conjunction with the discrete fractional Fourier transform (DFrFT). Specifically, the DFrFT estimates the chirp parameters (related to the instantaneous acceleration of a vibrating object) of a slow-time signal associated with the SAR image. However, ground clutter surrounding a vibrating object introduces uncertainties in the estimate of the chirp parameter retrieved via the DFrFT method. To overcome this shortcoming, various techniques based on subspace decomposition of the SAR slow-time signal have been developed. Nonetheless, the effectiveness of these techniques is limited to …

Stepping Responses To Treadmill Perturbations Vary With Severity Of Motor Deficits In Human Sci, Virginia W. T. Chu, T. George Hornby, Brian D. Schmit

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this study, we investigated the responses to tread perturbations during human stepping on a treadmill. Our approach was to test the effects of perturbations to a single leg using a split-belt treadmill in healthy participants and in participants with varying severity of spinal cord injury (SCI). We recruited 11 people with incomplete SCI and 5 noninjured participants. As participants walked on an instrumented treadmill, the belt on one side was stopped or accelerated briefly during mid to late stance. A majority of participants initiated an unnecessary swing when the treadmill was stopped in mid stance, although the likelihood of …

Tactile-Star: A Novel Tactile Stimulator And Recorder System For Evaluating And Improving Tactile Perception, Giulia Ballardini, Giorgio Carlini, Robert A. Scheidt, Ilana Nisky, Maura Casadio

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Many neurological diseases impair the motor and somatosensory systems. While several different technologies are used in clinical practice to assess and improve motor functions, somatosensation is evaluated subjectively with qualitative clinical scales. Treatment of somatosensory deficits has received limited attention. To bridge the gap between the assessment and training of motor vs. somatosensory abilities, we designed, developed, and tested a novel, low-cost, two-component (bimanual) mechatronic system targeting tactile somatosensation: the Tactile-STAR—a tactile stimulator and recorder. The stimulator is an actuated pantograph structure driven by two servomotors, with an end-effector covered by a rubber material that can apply two different …

The Impact Of Phosphorous Species On Dewaterability Of Wastewater Solids, Erik Anderson Apr 2018

The Impact Of Phosphorous Species On Dewaterability Of Wastewater Solids, Erik Anderson

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Phosphorus regulations are causing Water Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRFs) to implement new technologies to remove phosphorus (P) before they discharge liquid effluent. Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (EBPR) is often employed to remove P from water. However, sludges from EBPR plants have shown decreases in dewaterability soon after EBPR was initiated. This decline in dewaterability is not well understood, nor is the best way to improve the dewatering EBPR sludge. Specifically, the role of different P species on sludge dewaterability is not well understood. Several laboratory experiments were conducted at the Marquette University Water Quality Center with the following objectives: i) …

Hybrid Sensorless Field Oriented And Direct Torque Control For Variable Speed Brushless Dc Motors, Kellen Carey Apr 2018

Hybrid Sensorless Field Oriented And Direct Torque Control For Variable Speed Brushless Dc Motors, Kellen Carey

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The objective of this thesis is to design a hybrid sensorless closed-loop motor controller using a combination of Field-Oriented Control (FOC) and Direct Torque Control (DTC) for brushless DC motors used in multi-rotor aerial vehicles. The primary challenge is the wide range of desired working speeds, which can quickly vary from low speed to high speed. For this range, the control approach must be efficient, effective, and low-cost in order to provide fast response times during initial startup, steady-state, and transient operation. Additional design challenges include minimal response time to desired speed changes and small steady-state speed errors. Finally, the …

Pharmacokinetic Modeling Of 99mtc-Hmpao Images Of Isolated Perfused Rat Lungs, Katherine C. Barry Apr 2018

Pharmacokinetic Modeling Of 99mtc-Hmpao Images Of Isolated Perfused Rat Lungs, Katherine C. Barry

Master's Theses (2009 -)

The single-photon emission tomography (SPECT) imaging biomarker technetium-labeled hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (99mTc-HMPAO) exists in two forms, the oxidized, cell-permeable form and the reduced, cell-impermeable form. Recent studies revealed that the lung uptake of 99mTc-HMPAO increases early in rat models of human acute lung injury. Lung uptake of 99mTc-HMPAO is the net result of multiple cellular and vascular processes, many of which can vary with acute illness. Thus, when a change in the lung uptake of 99mTc-HMPAO is detected, it is unclear how much of this change is due to alteration in the activity of the targeted cellular process versus alteration of …

Anaerobic Co-Digestion Of Aqueous Liquid From Biosolids Pyrolysis, Seyedfatemeh Seyedi Apr 2018

Anaerobic Co-Digestion Of Aqueous Liquid From Biosolids Pyrolysis, Seyedfatemeh Seyedi

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Pyrolysis is a process to treat biosolids and recover energy. During pyrolysis, conversion of organic matter to energy-rich products yields biochar, py-gas, and pyrolysis liquids (aqueous phase and non-aqueous bio-oil). The aqueous pyrolysis liquid (APL), is a high-COD liquid with no apparent use that contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitrogen-containing compounds. One potential beneficial use of APL is as a co-digestate to produce more biogas for renewable energy from anaerobic digesters at municipal water resource recovery facilities. Some of the organics in APL may be converted to biomethane via anaerobic digestion under proper conditions. However, some APL organics are known …

Immersive Visualization In Biomedical Computational Fluid Dynamics And Didactic Teaching And Learning, John Thomas Venn Apr 2018

Immersive Visualization In Biomedical Computational Fluid Dynamics And Didactic Teaching And Learning, John Thomas Venn

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Virtual reality (VR) can stimulate active learning, critical thinking, decision making and improved performance. It requires a medium to show virtual content, which is called a virtual environment (VE). The MARquette Visualization Lab (MARVL) is an example of a VE. Robust processes and workflows that allow for the creation of content for use within MARVL further increases the userbase for this valuable resource. A workflow was created to display biomedical computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and complementary data in a wide range of VE’s. This allows a researcher to study the simulation in its natural three-dimensional (3D) morphology. In addition, it …

Effect Of Low Aeration And Heat Drying On Anaerobic Digester Performance And Microbial Community, Dylan Thomas Friss Apr 2018

Effect Of Low Aeration And Heat Drying On Anaerobic Digester Performance And Microbial Community, Dylan Thomas Friss

Master's Theses (2009 -)

This thesis describes three research projects on anaerobic digestion (AD) that investigated functional differences and relationships between microbial composition and digester function. Both archaeal and bacterial communities were characterized using high throughput (Illumina) sequencing technology with universal 16S rRNA gene primers. In the first project, limited aeration, and limited aeration with an aerotolerant enrichment culture were investigated as possible methods to increase digester functional performance in comparison to a strictly anaerobic control digester. No functional differences were observed at quasi-steady state between the limited aerated digester (LAD), limited aerated anaerobic digester augmented with an aerotolerant enrichment culture (LADE), and strictly …

Investigation Of Reactive Oxygen Species Production In The Rat Lung Using Optical Imaging, Nina Friedly Apr 2018

Investigation Of Reactive Oxygen Species Production In The Rat Lung Using Optical Imaging, Nina Friedly

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Oxidative stress, the imbalance between production of oxidants or reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant activity, plays a key role in the pathogenesis of acute and chronic lung diseases. The objective of this thesis was to develop a robust protocol for measuring the rate of H2O2 production in isolated perfused rat lungs and to determine the cellular sources of that rate using Amplex Red (AR). For a given lung, AR (25 mM) along with horseradish peroxidase (5 U/ml) and ascorbate oxidase (1U/ml) were added to a perfusate reservoir that was recirculated through the lungs and sampled at 5 minute intervals …

Computational Methods For Modeling Multicomponent Droplet Vaporization, Alanna Y. Cooney Apr 2018

Computational Methods For Modeling Multicomponent Droplet Vaporization, Alanna Y. Cooney

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models for combustion of multicomponent hydrocarbon fuels must often prioritize computational efficiency over model complexity, leading to oversimplifying assumptions in the sub-models for droplet vaporization and chemical kinetics. Therefore, a computationally efficient hybrid droplet vaporization-chemical surrogate approach has been developed which emulates both the physical and chemical properties of a multicomponent fuel. For the droplet vaporization/physical portion of the hybrid, a new solution method is presented called the Coupled Algebraic-Direct Quadrature Method of Moments (CA-DQMoM) with delumping which accurately solves for the evolution of every discrete species in a vaporizing multicomponent fuel droplet with the computational …

Investigation Of The Effects Of Prosthetic Knee Condition On Novice Transfemoral Amputee Runners, Natalie Nelson Apr 2018

Investigation Of The Effects Of Prosthetic Knee Condition On Novice Transfemoral Amputee Runners, Natalie Nelson

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Some unilateral transfemoral amputees (TFAs) run in a prosthesis with an articulating prosthetic knee, others choose to run without a knee (prosthetic socket and foot are linked via a straight, non-articulating pylon) to increase stability. Research regarding unilateral TFA running with an unlocked versus locked prosthetic knee (approximately equivalent to the no-knee condition) with respect to energy cost and temporal metrics is limited; no studies have investigated the impact of knee condition on kinematic metrics. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the prosthetic knee of a running-specific prosthesis (RSP) should be unlocked or locked for unilateral TFAs …

High-Intensity Variable Stepping Training In Patients With Motor Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury: A Case Series, Carey L. Holleran, Patrick W. Hennessey, Abigail L. Leddy, Gordhan B. Mahtani, Gabrielle Brazg, Brian D. Schmit, T. George Hornby Apr 2018

High-Intensity Variable Stepping Training In Patients With Motor Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury: A Case Series, Carey L. Holleran, Patrick W. Hennessey, Abigail L. Leddy, Gordhan B. Mahtani, Gabrielle Brazg, Brian D. Schmit, T. George Hornby

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background and Purpose: Previous data suggest that large amounts of high-intensity stepping training in variable contexts (tasks and environments) may improve locomotor function, aerobic capacity, and treadmill gait kinematics in individuals poststroke. Whether similar training strategies are tolerated and efficacious for patients with other acute-onset neurological diagnoses, such as motor incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI), is unknown. Individuals with iSCI potentially have greater bilateral impairments. This case series evaluated the feasibility and preliminary short- and long-term efficacy of highintensity variable stepping practice in ambulatory participants for more than 1 year post-iSCI.

Case Series Description: Four participants with iSCI (neurological levels …

Quantifying Sea-Level Rise Hazard Addressing Climate Forcing And Projection Uncertainty, Matthew Thomas Apr 2018

Quantifying Sea-Level Rise Hazard Addressing Climate Forcing And Projection Uncertainty, Matthew Thomas

Dissertations (1934 -)

Sea-level rise, driven by climate change, puts coastal communities and ecosystems at risk. Major sources that contribute to sea-level rise include ocean thermal expansion, glacier loss, and ice sheet loss. Here we account for uncertainty in modeling these sources, along with climate forcing uncertainty.Ocean thermal expansion uncertainty is modeled using a probabilistic ensemble of climate models and climate forcing scenarios. The ensemble addresses model uniqueness and weights models and scenarios based on their ability to reproduce observed sea-level trends. Glacier sea-level rise is modeled by updating an existing glacier mass balance model with a probabilistic regional covariance model that addresses …

Development And Application Of Quantitative Metrics For Computed Tomography Image Quality Assessment, Parag Khobragade

Dissertations (1934 -)

Selecting the tube current can be challenging when using iterative reconstruction algorithms due to the varying relationship between spatial resolution, contrast, noise, and dose across different algorithms. The objective of this dissertation was to develop and evaluate an Automated Exposure Control (AEC) method for iterative reconstruction algorithms using a task-based image quality metric. To achieve this objective, several CT image quality metrics were evaluated and developed. Two studies were performed to evaluate candidate metrics for use in a task-based AEC method. In Aim 1, a study was performed to identify and experimentally evaluate candidate metrics that have been previously proposed …

Micropollutant-Free Nutrient Recovery: Adsorption Of Micropollutants On Ion Exchangers And Biosolids-Derived Biochar, Yiran Tong Apr 2018

Micropollutant-Free Nutrient Recovery: Adsorption Of Micropollutants On Ion Exchangers And Biosolids-Derived Biochar, Yiran Tong

Dissertations (1934 -)

The presence of excessive nutrients in treated wastewater effluent is a growing concern in terms of water quality and ecological balance. Thus, removal of nutrients is of great interest. Moreover, the removed nutrients can be recovered in forms amenable for agricultural reuse, which yields a sustainable supply of nonrenewable phosphorus that can be used to support global food production. As nutrient recovery gains interest, it is essential that the products be free of harmful contaminants. One class of contaminants of great concern is organic micropollutants. To help address these issues, this study evaluated the fate and impact of micropollutants during …

An Unsupervised Cluster: Learning Water Customer Behavior Using Variation Of Information On A Reconstructed Phase Space, Michele Rae Bizub Malinowski Apr 2018

An Unsupervised Cluster: Learning Water Customer Behavior Using Variation Of Information On A Reconstructed Phase Space, Michele Rae Bizub Malinowski

Dissertations (1934 -)

The unsupervised clustering algorithm described in this dissertation addresses the need to divide a population of water utility customers into groups based on their similarities and differences, using only the measured flow data collected by water meters. After clustering, the groups represent customers with similar consumption behavior patterns and provide insight into ‘normal’ and ‘unusual’ customer behavior patterns. This research focuses upon individually metered water utility customers and includes both residential and commercial customer accounts serviced by utilities within North America. The contributions of this dissertation not only represent a novel academic work, but also solve a practical problem for …

Analysis Of Sensor Signals For Online Detection Of Hydrocarbons In Liquids In The Presence Of Interferents, Karthick Sothivelr Apr 2018

Analysis Of Sensor Signals For Online Detection Of Hydrocarbons In Liquids In The Presence Of Interferents, Karthick Sothivelr

Dissertations (1934 -)

Current applicability of many chemical sensors is limited due to the lack of adequate selectivity to enable real-world applications. Often, the chemically sensitive element of the sensor is only partially selective to any specific target analyte, potentially giving rise to low probability of detection. Other challenges include the need to identify and quantify the target analytes in a mixture, especially in the presence of non-target interferents. In this dissertation, to enhance the selectivity of the sensor, analysis of sensor signals for detection and quantification of mixtures of hydrocarbon compounds in liquids in the presence of interferents using estimation theory and …

Soot And Spectral Radiation Modeling For High-Pressure Turbulent Spray Flames, Sebastian Ferreyro Fernandez, C. Paul, A. Sircar, A. Imren, D. C. Haworth, Somesh Roy, Michael F. Modest

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A transported probability density function (PDF) method and a photon Monte Carlo/line-by-line (PMC/LBL) spectral model are exercised to generate physical insight into soot processes and spectral radiation characteristics in transient high-pressure turbulent n-dodecane spray flames, under conditions that are relevant for compression-ignition piston engines. PDF model results are compared with experimental measurements and with results from a locally well-stirred reactor (WSR) model that neglects unresolved turbulent fluctuations in composition and temperature. Computed total soot mass and soot spatial distributions are highly sensitive to the modeling of unresolved turbulent fluctuations. To achieve reasonable agreement between model and experiment and to capture …

Investigation Of Lstm Based Prediction For Dynamic Energy Management In Chip Multiprocessors, Milad Ghorbani Moghaddam, Wenkai Guan, Cristinel Ababei

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of using long short-term memory (LSTM) instead of Kalman filtering to do prediction for the purpose of constructing dynamic energy management (DEM) algorithms in chip multi-processors (CMPs). Either of the two prediction methods is employed to estimate the workload in the next control period for each of the processor cores. These estimates are then used to select voltage-frequency (VF) pairs for each core of the CMP during the next control period as part of a dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) technique. The objective of the DVFS technique is to reduce energy consumption …
