Geometric Construction-Based Realization Of Spatial Elastic Behaviors In Parallel And Serial Manipulators, Shuguang Huang, Joseph M. Schimmels
Geometric Construction-Based Realization Of Spatial Elastic Behaviors In Parallel And Serial Manipulators, Shuguang Huang, Joseph M. Schimmels
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
This paper addresses the realization of spatial elastic behavior with a parallel or a serial manipulator. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a manipulator (either parallel or serial) to realize a specific elastic behavior are presented and interpreted in terms of the manipulator geometry. These conditions completely decouple the requirements on component elastic properties from the requirements on mechanism kinematics. New construction-based synthesis procedures for spatial elastic behaviors are developed. With these synthesis procedures, one can select each elastic component of a parallel (or serial) mechanism based on the geometry of a restricted space of allowable candidates. With each elastic component …
Mechanical Behavior Of Three-Dimensional Braided Nickel-Based Superalloys Synthesized Via Pack Cementation, Nicolas Lippitz, Dinc Erdeniz, Keith W. Sharp, David C. Dunand
Mechanical Behavior Of Three-Dimensional Braided Nickel-Based Superalloys Synthesized Via Pack Cementation, Nicolas Lippitz, Dinc Erdeniz, Keith W. Sharp, David C. Dunand
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Braided tubes of Ni-based superalloys are fabricated via three-dimensional (3-D) braiding of ductile Ni-20Cr (wt pct) wires followed by post-textile gas-phase alloying with Al and Ti to create, after homogenization and aging, γ/γ′ strengthened lightweight, porous structures. Tensile tests reveal an increase in strength by 100 MPa compared to as-braided Ni-20Cr (wt pct). An interrupted tensile test, combined with X-ray tomographic scans between each step, sheds light on the failure behavior of the braided superalloy tubes.
Effect Of Sensory Attenuation On Cortical Movement-Related Oscillations, Joseph J. Lee, Brian D. Schmit
Effect Of Sensory Attenuation On Cortical Movement-Related Oscillations, Joseph J. Lee, Brian D. Schmit
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
This study examined the impact of induced sensory deficits on cortical, movement-related oscillations measured using electroencephalography (EEG). We hypothesized that EEG patterns in healthy subjects with induced sensory reduction would be comparable to EEG found after chronic loss of sensory feedback. EEG signals from 64 scalp locations were measured from 10 healthy subjects. Participants dorsiflexed their ankle after prolonged vibration of the tibialis anterior (TA). Beta band time frequency decompositions were calculated using wavelets and compared across conditions. Changes in patterns of movement-related brain activity were observed following attenuation of sensory feedback. A significant decrease in beta power of event-related …

An Efficient Coal Pyrolysis Model For Detailed Tar Species Vaporization, Jianqing Li, Simcha L. Singer
An Efficient Coal Pyrolysis Model For Detailed Tar Species Vaporization, Jianqing Li, Simcha L. Singer
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
An accurate and computationally efficient model for the vaporization of many tar species during coal particle pyrolysis has been developed. Like previous models, the molecular fragments generated by thermal decomposition are partitioned into liquid metaplast, which remains in the particle, and vapor, which escapes as tar, using a vapor-liquid equilibrium(VLE) sub-model. Multicomponent VLE is formulated as a rate-based process, which results in an ordinary differential equation (ODE) for every species. To reduce the computational expense of solving many ODEs, the model treats tar and metaplast species as a continuous distribution of molecular weight. To improve upon the accuracy of …

H.264 Video Decoder Implemented On Fpgas Using 3×3 And 2×2 Networks-On-Chip, Ian Barge, Cristinel Ababei
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In this paper, we present the design and verification of the H.264 video decoder algorithm on FPGAs. The primary difference compared to previously reported designs is that the communication between the decoder modules is done via a network-on-chip in our case. The proposed design is a complete system level hardware design described in VHDL and Verilog. We report experimental results for two different implementations. The first implementation uses a 3×3 network-on-chip and is validated on the DE4 development board, which uses Altera's Stratix IV GX FPGA chip. The second implementation uses a 2×2 network-on-chip and is validated on the Cyclone …

Fully Probabilistic Analysis Of Frp-To-Concrete Bonded Joints Considering Model Uncertainty, Dongming Zhang, Xiang-Lin Gu, Qian-Qian Yu, Hongwei Huang, Baolin Wan, Cheng Jiang
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
This work presents a full reliability-based analysis framework for fiber-reinforced polymer(FRP)-to-concrete bonded joints considering model uncertainty. Eight frequently used bond strength models for FRP-to-concrete bonded joints were calibrated by defining a model factor. A total of 641 well-documented tests were considered. Four of the eight models had model factors that correlated with input design parameters and the systematic part of the model factor was removed by a regression equation f. By doing this type of characterization, all eight model factors could be comparatively uniform and described by lognormally distributed random variables. The merit of the uniform model uncertainties …

Evaluation Of Continuous Monitoring As A Tool For Municipal Stormwater Management Programs, Walter M. Mcdonald, Randel L. Dymond, Vinod K. Lohani
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the uncertainty attributable to inadequate temporal sampling of stormwater discharge and water quality, and understand its implications for meeting monitoring objectives relevant to municipal separate storm sewer systems (MS4s). A methodology is presented to evaluate uncertainty attributable to inadequate temporal sampling of continuous stormflow and water quality, and a case study demonstrates the application of the methodology to six small urban watersheds (0.8-6.8 km2) and six large rural watersheds (30-16,192 km2) in Virginia. Results indicate the necessity of high-frequency continuous monitoring for accurately capturing multiple monitoring objectives, including …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Purpose
This study quantified the performance of coronary artery motion artifact metrics relative to human observer ratings. Motion artifact metrics have been used as part of motion correction and best‐phase selection algorithms for Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography (CCTA). However, the lack of ground truth makes it difficult to validate how well the metrics quantify the level of motion artifact. This study investigated five motion artifact metrics, including two novel metrics, using a dynamic phantom, clinical CCTA images, and an observer study that provided ground‐truth motion artifact scores from a series of pairwise comparisons.
Method
Five motion artifact metrics were calculated …

Objective—We explored mechanisms that alter mitochondrial structure and function in pulmonary endothelial cells (PEC) function after hyperoxia.
Approach and Results—Mitochondrial structures of PECs exposed to hyperoxia or normoxia were visualized and mitochondrial fragmentation quantified. Expression of pro-fission or fusion proteins or autophagy-related proteins were assessed by Western blot. Mitochondrial oxidative state was determined using mito-roGFP. Tetramethylrhodamine methyl ester estimated mitochondrial polarization in treatment groups. The role of mitochondrially derived reactive oxygen species in mt-fragmentation was investigated with mito-TEMPOL and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) damage studied by using ENDO III (mt-tat-endonuclease III), a protein that repairs mDNA damage. Drp-1 (dynamin-related …

Motor Output Variability Impairs Driving Ability In Older Adults: Reply To Stinchcombe, Dickerson, Weaver, And Bedard, Evangelos A. Christou, Basma Yacoubi, Changki Kim, Hwasil Moon, Tanya Onushko, Neha Lodha
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Driving is a complex skill, as indicated by Stinchcombe and colleagues in their letter. It requires the integration of sensory inputs, cognitive processing, and motor execution. Although our title is broad, we clearly indicate that our findings only address a single component of driving, namely reactive driving. We also indicate that these findings are based on a simulated task and recommend that future studies should examine the contribution of motor output variability to on-road driving performance (see Considerations in the Discussion section). Thus, we share the consideration of Stinchcombe and colleagues that the current results only address a small portion …

Analytical Formulas For Mean Gain And Excess Noise Factor In Inas Avalanche Photodiodes, Erum Jamil, Majeed M. Hayat, Gordon A. Keeler
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
It has been known that McIntyre's local multiplication theory for avalanche photodiodes (APDs) does not fully explain the experimental results for single-carrier InAs APDs, which exhibit excess noise factor values below 2. While it has been established that the inclusion of the dead-space effect in the nonlocal multiplication theory resolves this discrepancy, no closed-form formulas for the mean gain and excess noise factor have been specialized to InAs APDs in a nonlocal setting. Upon utilizing prior analytical formulation of single-carrier avalanche multiplication based on age-dependent branching theory in conjunction with nonlocal ionization coefficients and thresholds for InAs, closed-form solutions of …

Electronically Tuned Phase Transition In Germanium Telluride (Gete) Cells For Memory And Rf Switch Applications, Dushyant Tomer, Ronald A. Coutu Jr.
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Germanium telluride (GeTe) is a phase change material that undergoes an amorphous to crystalline transition upon heating to ~ 200oC. This transition is reversible in nature and results in ~ six orders of magnitude difference in GeTe resistivity which makes it a suitable candidate for data storage and other functional devices. In this work, micro-size phase change test cells were fabricated by RF sputtering GeTe thin films onto silicon (Si) wafers and Si wafers coated with silicon dioxide (SiO2), silicon nitride (Si3N4), and alumina (Al2O3) films. Two different heating methods, conductive and electrical (i.e. Joule heating), were applied to induce …

A Phase Change Material For Reconfigurable Circuit Applications, Dushyant Tomer, Ronald A. Coutu Jr.
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The large resistance contrast between amorphous and crystalline states of phase change materials (PCM) makes them a promising candidate for data-storage applications. Germanium telluride (GeTe), an early member of the PCM family, shows ~6 orders of magnitude difference in resistivity upon phase transition. In this paper, two different heating methods, direct (Joule) and indirect thermal heating, were applied to induce a phase transition in vertical and horizontal GeTe resistors. In the electrical measurements, it was observed that thermal heating produces a two orders of magnitude larger difference in GeTe resistivity that the Joule heating, irrespective of the resistor’s geometry and …

Modeling Multicomponent Fuel Droplet Vaporization With Finite Liquid Diffusivity Using Coupled Algebraic-Dqmom With Delumping, Alanna Y. Cooney, Simcha L. Singer
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Multicomponent fuel droplet vaporization models for use in combustion CFD codes often prioritize computational efficiency over model complexity. This leads to oversimplifying assumptions such as single component droplets or infinite liquid diffusivity. The previously developed Direct Quadrature Method of Moments (DQMoM) with delumping model demonstrated a computationally efficient and accurate approach to solve for every discrete species in a well-mixed vaporizing multicomponent droplet. To expand the method to less restrictive cases, a new solution technique is presented called the Coupled Algebraic-Direct Quadrature Method of Moments (CA-DQMoM). In contrast to previous moment methods for droplet vaporization, CA-DQMoM solves for the evolution …

Pretreatment And Anaerobic Co-Digestion Of Selected Phb And Pla Bioplastics, Nicholas John Norio Benn, Daniel Zitomer
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Conventional petroleum-derived plastics are recalcitrant to biodegradation and can be problematic as they accumulate in the environment. In contrast, it may be possible to add novel, biodegradable bioplastics to anaerobic digesters at municipal water resource recovery facilities along with primary sludge to produce more biomethane. In this study, thermal and chemical bioplastic pretreatments were first investigated to increase the rate and extent of anaerobic digestion. Subsequently, replicate, bench-scale anaerobic co-digesters fed synthetic primary sludge with and without PHB bioplastic were maintained for over 170 days. Two polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), one poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) and one polylactic acid (PLA) bioplastic were investigated. Biochemical methane …
Enhancing Frp-To-Concrete Bond Behavior By Epoxy Ribs, Cheng Jiang, Baolin Wan, John Omboko
Enhancing Frp-To-Concrete Bond Behavior By Epoxy Ribs, Cheng Jiang, Baolin Wan, John Omboko
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The bond between external bonding (EB) of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials to concrete is the weakest link in the strengthened concrete flexural members. There are three mechanisms to transfer the interfacial shear between FRP and the concrete substrate, i.e., adhesion, interlocking and friction. This paper proposes a new approach by grooving on the concrete surface before applying epoxy to make epoxy ribs to increase interlocking. An experimental program was conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed epoxy ribs. Six grooves perpendicular to the fiber direction were cut on the bonding surface of the concrete blocks. The grooves …
A Degradation Function Consistent With Cocks–Ashby Porosity Kinetics, John A. Moore
A Degradation Function Consistent With Cocks–Ashby Porosity Kinetics, John A. Moore
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The load carrying capacity of ductile materials degrades as a function of porosity, stress state and strain-rate. The effect of these variables on porosity kinetics is captured by the Cocks–Ashby model; however, the Cocks–Ashby model does not account for material degradation directly. This work uses a yield criteria to form a degradation function that is consistent with Cocks–Ashby porosity kinetics and is a function of porosity, stress state and strain-rate dependence. Approximations of this degradation function for pure hydrostatic stress states are also explored.

Pathologic movement patterns are characterized by abnormal kinematics that alter how muscles support the body during walking. Individual muscles are often the target of interventions with physical therapy and surgery alike, yet the tools to assess individual muscles clinically remain limited. The aim of this study is to assess OpenSim as a clinical tool for individualized rehabilitative evaluation of children using orthotics. This anatomic and kinematic modeling study was focused on pre- and post-treatment assessment of gait characteristics in fourteen children using orthotic devices. A range of four to twelve acceptable gait capture trials was collected for each child before …

Effect Of Pyrolysis On The Removal Of Antibiotic Resistance Genes And Class I Integrons From Municipal Wastewater Biosolids, Lee Kimbell, Anthony D. Kappell, Patrick J. Mcnamara
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Wastewater biosolids represent a significant reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). While current biosolids treatment technologies can reduce ARG levels in residual wastewater biosolids, observed removal rates vary substantially. Pyrolysis is an anoxic thermal degradation process that can be used to convert biosolids into energy rich products including py-gas and py-oil, and a beneficial soil amendment, biochar. Batch pyrolysis experiments conducted on municipal biosolids revealed that the 16S rRNA gene, the ARGs erm(B), sul1, tet(L), tet(O), and the integrase gene of class 1 integrons (intI1) were significantly reduced at pyrolysis temperatures ranging from 300–700 …

Complete ablation of liver tumors is vital for minimizing the risk of local tumor recurrence. Accurately identifying the hallmarks of tissue necrosis during thermal ablative therapies may significantly increase the efficacy of ablation, while minimizing unnecessary damage to the surrounding normal tissues or critical structures. Light propagation in biological tissues is sensitive to the tissue microstructure and chromophore concentrations. In our previous studies, we found that the wavelength (λ) averaged liver tissue absorption coefficient μa and reduced scattering coefficient μs’ change significantly upon heating which may be used for assessment of tissue damage during thermal …

Background Context
Opioid use is prevalent in the management of pre- and postoperative pain in patients undergoing spinal fusion. There is evidence that opioids downregulate osteoblasts in vitro, and a previous study found that morphine delays the maturation and remodeling of callus in a rat femur fracture model. However, the effect of opioids on healing of spinal fusion has not been investigated before. Isolating the effect of opioid exposure in humans would be limited by the numerous confounding factors that affect fusion healing. Therefore, we have used a well-established rabbit model to study the process of spinal fusion healing that …

Introduction Despite rehabilitation and gait training, the gait of individuals with lower-limb amputation is often asymmetric and falls and/or fear of falling are common. Clinical assessments of balance and stability include the Berg BalanceScale and the Dynamic Gait Index. Biomechanical assessments, conducted largely in research laboratories, are more objective, quantitative, and may provide greater resolution. These biomechanical measures include postural sway during both unilateral and bilateral standing tasks and the dynamic postural response to applied or volitional perturbations. The objective of this study was to investigate the utility of a dynamic balance system, a relatively new clinical tool incorporating dual …

The robustness of the visual trackers based on the correlation maps generated from convolutional neural networks can be substantially improved if these maps are used to employed in conjunction with a particle filter. In this article, we present a particle filter that estimates the target size as well as the target position and that utilizes a new adaptive correlation filter to account for potential errors in the model generation. Thus, instead of generating one model which is highly dependent on the estimated target position and size, we generate a variable number of target models based on high likelihood particles, which …

This work reports the development and experimental verification of a sensor signal processing technique for online identification and quantification of aqueous mixtures of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes (BTEX) and 1, 2, 4-trimethylbenzene (TMB) at ppb concentrations using time-dependent frequency responses from a single polymer-coated shear-horizontal surface acoustic wave sensor. Signal processing based on multi-stage exponentially weighted recursive leastsquares estimation (EW-RLSE) is utilized for estimating the concentrations of the analytes in the mixture that are most likely to have produced a given sensor response. The initial stages of EW-RLSE are used to eliminate analyte(s) that are erroneously identified as present in …

Mobile manipulators are a potential solution to the increasing need for additional flexibility and mobility in industrial applications. However, they tend to lack the accuracy and precision achieved by fixed manipulators, especially in scenarios where both the manipulator and the autonomous vehicle move simultaneously. This paper analyzes the problem of dynamically evaluating the positioning error of mobile manipulators. In particular, it investigates the use of Bayesian methods to predict the position of the end-effector in the presence of uncertainty propagated from the mobile platform. The precision of the mobile manipulator is evaluated through its ability to intercept retroreflective markers using …

Experimental Validation Of An Unscented Kalman Filter For Estimating Transient Engine Exhaust Composition With Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, David Wilson, Casey Allen
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy is a prevalent technique for measuring the comprehensive chemical composition of engine emissions. However, its applicability to transient emissions is limited due to recirculation of exhaust from past engine cycles within a FTIR gas cell and nonstationarity of the infrared beam intensity. An unscented Kalman filter is developed to overcome these limitations and obtain accurate, time-resolved estimations of engine exhaust composition from FTIR measurements. Residence time distribution within the FTIR gas cell is modeled using the well-mixed assumption, while the Fourier transform of an interferogram generated from a linearly evolving, uniformly broadened absorption line is …
