Properties And Mechanisms Of Self-Sensing Carbon Nanofibers/Epoxy Composites For Structural Health Monitoring, Yanlei Wang, Yongshuai Wang, Baolin Wan, Baoguo Han, Gaochuang Cai, Zhizheng Li
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
In this paper, carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with high aspect ratio were dispersed into epoxy matrix via mechanical stirring and ultrasonic treatment to fabricate self-sensing CNFs/epoxy composites. The mechanical, electrical and piezoresistive properties of the nanocomposites filled with different contents of CNFs were investigated. Based on the tunneling conduction and percolation conduction theories, the mechanisms of piezoresistive property of the nanocomposites were also explored. The experimental results show that adding CNFs can effectively enhance the compressive strengths and elastic moduli of the composites. The percolation threshold of the CNFs/epoxy composites is 0.186 vol% according to the modified General Effective Media Equation. …
Development Of Domain Analysis For Determining Potential Pavement Damage, Angeli Gamez, Jaime Hernandez, Hasan Ozer, Imad L. Al-Qadi
Development Of Domain Analysis For Determining Potential Pavement Damage, Angeli Gamez, Jaime Hernandez, Hasan Ozer, Imad L. Al-Qadi
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
A new approach for quantifying flexible pavement damage potential is proposed. The new method, domain analysis, utilizes multiaxial results from advanced finite element models to calculate the response of flexible pavements to tire loading. The output is a single scalar value, which is unique to a given pavement structure and loading configuration. The ability of the domain analysis to quantify bulk damage potential and overcome flaws of conventional approaches based on point responses is demonstrated by testing three case studies: (1) comparison of typical loading conditions of dual-tire assembly (DTA), new-generation wide-base tire (NG-WBT), and steer tire; (2) effect of …

Concrete Pavement Blowup Considering Generalized Boundary Conditions, Jaime Hernandez, Imad L. Al-Qadi
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
An analytical expression for static stability of a rectangular slab with two simply supported and two elastically restrained edges is presented. The linear elastic isotropic slab can represent a rigid pavement resting on an elastic foundation and loaded by a uniform in-plane axial load per unit length along the edges. The partially restrained edges are connected to the ground by translational and rotational elastic springs; an appropriate magnitude of the springs can capture classical boundary conditions such as free, simply supported, and clamped edges. Results from classical boundary conditions and a finite-element model were used to validate the proposed stability …

Early Term Effects Of Rhbmp-2 On Pedicle Screw Fixation In A Sheep Model: Histomorphometric And Biomechanical Analyses, Jeffrey M. Toth, Mei Wang, Chetan Patel, Akshi Arora
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Background: The effects of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) on pedicle screw pullout force and its potential to improve spinal fixation have not previously been investigated. rhBMP-2 on an absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) carrier was delivered in and around cannulated and fenestrated pedicle screws in a sheep lumbar spine instability model. Two control groups (empty screw and ACS with buffer) were also evaluated. We hypothesized that rhBMP-2 could stimulate bone growth in and around the cannulated and fenestrated pedicle screws to improve early bone purchase.
Methods: Eight skeletally mature sheep underwent destabilizing laminectomies at L2–L3 and L4–L5 followed by …

A new approach is reported to detect and quantify the members of a group of small-aromatic-molecule target analytes: benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX), dissolved in water, in the presence of interferents, using only the data collected from a single polymer-coated SH-SAW (shear horizontal surface acoustic wave) device and a two-stage adaptive estimation scheme. This technique is composed of exponentially weighted recursive least-squares estimation (EW-RLSE) and a bank of Kalman filters (BKFs) and does not require any prior knowledge of the initial concentration range of the target analytes. The proposed approach utilizes the transient sensor response to sorption and/or desorption …

Coupled State-Dependent Riccati Equation Control For Continuous Time Nonlinear Mechatronics Systems, Xin Wang, Edwin E. Yaz, Susan C. Schneider
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
This manuscript considers the coupled state-dependent Riccati equation approach for systematically designing nonlinear quadratic regulator and H ∞ control of mechatronics systems. The state-dependent feedback control solutions can be obtained by solving a pair of coupled state-dependent Riccati equations, guaranteeing nonlinear quadratic optimality with inherent stability property in combination with robust ℓ 2 type of disturbance reduction. The derivation of this control strategy is based on Nash's game theory. Both of finite and infinite horizon control problems are discussed. An underactuated robotic system, Furuta rotary pendulum, is used to examine the effectiveness and robustness of this novel nonlinear control approach.

Accurate and efficient control of electric motors is dependent on knowledge of motor parameters such as the resistance and the inductance of the winding. However, these parameters are often unavailable to the control designer because they are dependent on the motor design and may change due to environmental effects such as temperature. An accurate real-time method to determine the values of these unknown parameters can improve motor performance over the entire operating range. In this work, a parameter estimation technique based on a bank of Kalman filters is used to adaptively estimate the motor winding resistance. Simulation results for a …

Cybersecurity is a major concern for designers of control systems that can be directed against any of their components. Observers are an integral part of control systems that require state feedback. This paper considers an observer subject to errors in implementation or subject to cyberattacks. The errors and cyberattacks result in perturbations in the gain and in a finite-energy but unknown disturbance input. We obtain conditions for Q-S-R dissipativity and stability of the observer in the presence of the gain errors and disturbances in the form of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Three examples are presented to show how the LMIs …

Micro-architectured Ni-based superalloy structures, with Ni-20Cr-3Ti-2Al (wt.%) composition and γ/γ′-microstructure, are created by a multi-step process: (i) non-crimp orthogonal 3D-weaving of ductile, 202 μm diameter Ni-20%Cr wires, (ii) gas-phase alloying with Al and Ti, (iii) simultaneous transient-liquid phase (TLP) bonding between wires and homogenization within wires via interdiffusion, (iv) solutionizing to create a single-phase solid solution, and (v) aging to precipitate the γ′ phase. The creep behavior of these 3D-woven γ/γ′ nickel-based superalloys is studied under uniaxial compression via experiments at 825 °C and via finite element (FE) analysis, using a 3D model of the woven structures obtained …

Prior Day Effect In Forecasting Daily Natural Gas Flow From Monthly Data, Maral Fakoor, George F. Corliss, Ronald H. Brown
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Many needs exist in the energy industry where measurement is monthly yet daily values are required. The process of disaggregation of low frequency measurement to higher frequency values has been presented in this literature. Also, a novel method that accounts for prior-day weather impacts in the disaggregation process is presented, even though prior-day impacts are not directly recoverable from monthly data. Having initial daily weather and gas flow data, the weather and flow data are aggregated to generate simulated monthly weather and consumption data. Linear regression models can be powerful tools for parametrization of monthly/daily consumption models and will enable …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Purpose
Evaluation of noise texture information in CT images is important for assessing image quality. Noise texture is often quantified by the noise power spectrum (NPS), which requires numerous image realizations to estimate. This study evaluated fractal dimension for quantifying noise texture as a scalar metric that can potentially be estimated using one image realization.
Methods
The American College of Radiology CT accreditation phantom (ACR) was scanned on a clinical scanner (Discovery CT750, GE Healthcare) at 120 kV and 25 and 90 mAs. Images were reconstructed using filtered back projection (FBP/ASIR 0%) with varying reconstruction kernels: Soft, Standard, Detail, Chest, …

To optimize fruit production, a portion of the flowers and fruitlets of apple trees must be removed early in the growing season. The proportion to be removed is determined by the bloom intensity, i.e., the number of flowers present in the orchard. Several automated computer vision systems have been proposed to estimate bloom intensity, but their overall performance is still far from satisfactory even in relatively controlled environments. With the goal of devising a technique for flower identification which is robust to clutter and to changes in illumination, this paper presents a method in which a pre-trained convolutional neural network …

In this study, conductive carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were dispersed into epoxy resin and then infused into glass fiber fabric to fabricate CNF/glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) laminates. The electrical resistance and strain of CNF/GFRP laminates were measured simultaneously during tensile loadings to investigate the in situ strain and damage monitoring capability of CNF/GFRP laminates. The damage evolution and conduction mechanisms of the laminates were also presented. The results indicated that the percolation threshold of CNFs content for CNF/GFRP laminates was 0.86 wt % based on a typical power law. The resistance response during monotonic tensile loading could be classified into three …
Pore-Resolving Simulation Of Char Particle Gasification Using Micro-Ct, Greg Hingwah Fong, Scott Jorgensen, Simcha L. Singer
Pore-Resolving Simulation Of Char Particle Gasification Using Micro-Ct, Greg Hingwah Fong, Scott Jorgensen, Simcha L. Singer
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Understanding the interaction between transport, reaction and morphology at the scale of individual char particles is important for optimizing solid fuel gasification and combustion processes. However, most particle-scale models treat porous char particles as an effective porous continuum, even though the presence of large, irregular macropores, voids and fractures render such upscaled treatments mathematically invalid, and the models non-predictive. A new modeling framework is therefore proposed to elucidate the impact of morphology on char particle gasification and combustion. A pore-resolving, transient, three-dimensional simulation for gasification of a realistic coal char particle is developed based on X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). The …

Pyrolysis is a thermochemical decomposition process that can be used to generate pyrolysis gas (py-gas), bio-oil, and biochar as well as energy from biomass. Biomass from agricultural waste and other plant-based materials has been the predominant pyrolysis research focus. Water resource recovery facilities also produce biomass, referred to as wastewater solids, that could be a viable pyrolysis feedstock. Water resource recovery facilities are central collection and production sites for wastewater solids. While the utilization of biochar from a variety of biomass types has been extensively studied, the utilization of wastewater biochars has not been reviewed in detail. This review compares …
Uv-Based Advanced Oxidation Of P22 Bacteriophange And E. Coli Bacteria, Vincent Martino
Uv-Based Advanced Oxidation Of P22 Bacteriophange And E. Coli Bacteria, Vincent Martino
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Two novel, sustainable UV-LED advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) were evaluated for their ability to improve inactivation efficacy of P22 bacteriophage and E. coli bacteria. The first objective of this research was to determine the treatment efficacy of P22 bacteriophage and E. coli bacteria using UV-LED at wavelengths of 255, 265, and 285 nm. The UV-LED system demonstrated high inactivation potential for both contaminants at all wavelengths, suggesting it could be a potential alternative to typical low-pressure and medium-pressure mercury-based UV systems. Increased inactivation of both microorganisms was observed with decreasing wavelength (255>265>285 nm). As the peak UV absorbance …

Muscle fiber length data obtained from the same experimental data was compared to control data to assess OpenSim’s muscle analysis …
Comparative Study Of Different Sensor Array Designs Involving Plasticized Polymer Coatings For Btex Detection In Water, Nicholas Post
Comparative Study Of Different Sensor Array Designs Involving Plasticized Polymer Coatings For Btex Detection In Water, Nicholas Post
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Detection and quantification of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) in liquid phase is of interest because of the significant public health hazards posed by these compounds. BTEX are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) commonly used as additives in gasoline. Shear horizontal surface acoustic wave (SH-SAW) devices have shown promise in liquid phase sensing applications and is used to address this problem. SH-SAW devices can be made chemically sensitive by depositing a polymer coating on the device surface. SH-SAW devices coated with commercially available polymers have shown modest sensitivity to BTEX compounds. However, there are few polymers which exhibit the properties …

Hierarchical Bayesian Data Fusion Using Autoencoders, Yevgeniy Vladimirovich Reznichenko
Master's Theses (2009 -)
In this thesis, a novel method for tracker fusion is proposed and evaluated for vision-based tracking. This work combines three distinct popular techniques into a recursive Bayesian estimation algorithm. First, semi supervised learning approaches are used to partition data and to train a deep neural network that is capable of capturing normal visual tracking operation and is able to detect anomalous data. We compare various methods by examining their respective receiver operating conditions (ROC) curves, which represent the trade off between specificity and sensitivity for various detection threshold levels. Next, we incorporate the trained neural networks into an existing data …

Control Design And Implementation Of An Active Transtibial Prosthesis, Joseph Klein
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Prior work at Marquette University developed the Marquette Prosthesis, an active transtibial prosthesis that utilized a torsional spring and a four-bar mechanism. The controls for the Marquette Prosthesis implemented a finite state control algorithm to determine the state of gait of the amputee along with two lower level controllers, a PI moment controller to control the moment during stance and a PID position controller to control the position during stance. The Marquette Prosthesis was successful in mimicking the gait profile presented by Winter. However, after completing human subject testing, the Marquette Prosthesis was insufficient in trying to match the gait …
Design Day Analysis - Forecasting Extreme Daily Natural Gas Demand, David Joseph Kaftan
Design Day Analysis - Forecasting Extreme Daily Natural Gas Demand, David Joseph Kaftan
Master's Theses (2009 -)
This work provides a framework for Design Day analysis. First, we estimate the temperature conditions which are expected to be colder than all but one day in N years. This temperature is known as the Design Day condition. Then, we forecast an upper bound on natural gas demand when temperature is at the Design Day condition. Natural gas distribution companies (LDCs) need to meet demand during extreme cold days. Just as bridge builders design for a nominal load, natural gas distribution companies need to design for a nominal temperature. This nominal temperature is the Design Day condition. The Design Day …

Search Methods For Mobile Manipulator Performance Measurement, Samuel Nana Yaw Amoako-Frimpong
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Mobile manipulators are a potential solution to the increasing need for additional flexibility and mobility in industrial robotics applications. However, they tend to lack the accuracy and precision achieved by fixed manipulators, especially in scenarios where both the manipulator and the autonomous vehicle move simultaneously. This thesis analyzes the problem of dynamically evaluating the positioning error of mobile manipulators. In particular, it investigates the use of Bayesian methods to predict the position of the end-effector in the presence of uncertainty propagated from the mobile platform. Simulations and real-world experiments are carried out to test the proposed method against a deterministic …
Dynamic Behavior Of Granular Earth Materials Subjected To Pressure-Shear Loading, Jeff Wilson Lajeunesse
Dynamic Behavior Of Granular Earth Materials Subjected To Pressure-Shear Loading, Jeff Wilson Lajeunesse
Dissertations (1934 -)
The dynamic response of granular earth materials such as sand has been of interest for many years. Multiple previous works have explored the shock response of sand in various grain shapes, sizes, and moisture contents, but the response during rapid combined loading has been relatively unexplored. The current study contributes to that lack of data by performing pressure-shear experiments on Oklahoma #1 silica sand, with quasi-smooth grains of 63 - 120 micron diameter and 99.8 wt.% Si02 composition. In these experiments, an oblique flyer plate impacts an equally inclined target, imparting a longitudinal (pressure) and transverse (shear) wave into a …

A dilute Al-0.07Zr-0.02Sc-0.005Er-0.06Si (at.%) alloy was microalloyed with 0.08 at.% Nb or Ta. Atom-probe tomography reveals that, upon aging, Nb and Ta partition to the coherent L12-Al3(Zr,Sc,Er) nanoprecipitates (with average concentrations of 0.2 and 0.08 at.%, respectively), with both segregating at the matrix/nanoprecipitate heterophase interface. This is consistent with the Nb- and Ta-modified alloys exhibiting, as compared to the unmodified alloy: (i) higher peak microhardness, from a higher nanoprecipitate volume fraction and/or latticeparameter mismatch; and (ii) improved aging resistance, from slower nanoprecipitate coarsening due to the small diffusivities of niobium and tantalum in aluminum. Analogous results …

In the 1950s and 1960s, there was a popular television show called To Tell the Truth, on which three contestants claimed to be a person with an unusual occupation or distinction. Two of them were impostors, and the other was telling the truth. Four panelists asked the contestants questions to determine who was being truthful. After each panelist chose the contestant he or she thought was telling the truth, the host would ask "Will the real _____ please stand up?" To create drama, each contestant would rise at different times and then sit, leaving the contestant with the unusual occupation …

Advanced understanding of the physics makes phase change materials (PCM) and metal-insulator transition (MIT) materials great candidates for direct current (DC) and radio frequency (RF) switching applications. In the literature, germanium telluride (GeTe), a PCM, and vanadium dioxide (VO2), an MIT material have been widely investigated for DC and RF switching applications due to their remarkable contrast in their OFF/ON state resistivity values. In this review, innovations in design, fabrication, and characterization associated with these PCM and MIT material-based RF switches, have been highlighted and critically reviewed from the early stage to the most recent works. We initially …

Micropollutants, including antibiotics, hormones, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products, are discharged into the environment with liquid and solid effluent streams from water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). The objective of this research was to determine whether biosolids-derived biochar (BS-biochar) could be used as a sorbent in continuous flow-through columns to remove micropollutants as a polishing step for wastewater treatment. Triclosan (TCS) was selected as a representative micropollutant due to frequent detection in liquid effluents, residual biosolids, and surface waters. Bench-scale column experiments were conducted to determine the effect of flow rate and competition due to the presence of other organic micropollutants …
