Material Property Dependence Of Nanoparticle Silicon Carbide Alloying In Additively Manufactured Molybdenum, Andrew P. Mason Mar 2023

Material Property Dependence Of Nanoparticle Silicon Carbide Alloying In Additively Manufactured Molybdenum, Andrew P. Mason

Theses and Dissertations

The structural performance of additively manufactured Mo printed by LPBF can be significantly improved by nanoparticle alloying. Previous AFIT studies of SiC nanoparticle addition conducted by Ellsworth (2022) et al. demonstrated increased powder consolidation, leading to reduced porosity, increased microhardness, and a shift in atomic defect concentrations. The addition of defected SiC particles is proposed to reduce in situ oxidation by acting as a sacrificial oxidizing agent and contributing to the formation of Mo disilicide secondary phases. This study investigated the relationship between laser powder bed fusion Mo microscale and nanoscale properties with varying SiC particle size while maintaining a …

Simulation Of Neutron Generation From Laser-Driven Fusion In A Liquid D2o Sheet Using Novel Warpx Module, Colton R. Stoner Mar 2023

Simulation Of Neutron Generation From Laser-Driven Fusion In A Liquid D2o Sheet Using Novel Warpx Module, Colton R. Stoner

Theses and Dissertations

Using WarpX’s new nuclear fusion module, this work attempts to model an experimental system at the ELL at the AFIT with WarpX and draw conclusions about fusion products from resulting simulations. Recently, a table-top, high repetition rate, mixed radiation source was demonstrated at the ELL employing a HIL to fuse the deuterium nuclei present in a unique liquid target of heavy water. Analysis of the simulations predicted an isotropic output of neutrons from deuterium-deuterium fusion. These simulated neutrons were created in tens of femtoseconds from dense bodies of deuterons that were perturbed by the laser. However, it was found that …

Validation Of Bottom-Up Gnss Radio Occultation Method To Measure D- And E-Region Electron Density, Dylan J. Shaver Mar 2023

Validation Of Bottom-Up Gnss Radio Occultation Method To Measure D- And E-Region Electron Density, Dylan J. Shaver

Theses and Dissertations

An in-depth validation of a new bottom-up approach using GNSS Radio Occultation (GNSS-RO) data to generate electron density profiles in the D- and E-region ionosphere. This comparison was completed using daytime ionosonde profiles when sporadic-E (Es) was not present, and corresponding FIRI profiles. The average GNSS-RO profile is a few kilometers higher in altitude than the ionosonde profiles at the minimum frequency, f min. When the ionosonde profiles are shifted so that the altitudes match at f min, they are in good agreement up to the E-region peak altitude, hmE. Below f min, the …

Defense Industrial Base Mergers And Acquisitions In The Post-Cold War Era, Corey D. Mack Mar 2023

Defense Industrial Base Mergers And Acquisitions In The Post-Cold War Era, Corey D. Mack

Theses and Dissertations

The United States Department of Defense (DoD) relies on prime contractors for weapon system development, acquisition, and sustainability, but the increased consolidation of the Defense Industrial Base (DIB) through mergers and acquisitions (M&A) has raised concerns over reduced competition. This research consists of two studies. The first reviews existing literature to identify factors behind the DIB's increased M&A activity since the 1990s, such as DoD budget cuts and market structure. The second study examines the relationship between a prime contractor's financial health and M&A spending, finding a significant relationship between efficiency and M&A spending. Policymakers can use this information to …

Faculty Publications

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) has been used for the first time to investigate the microstructure of additively manufactured molybdenum. Despite the wide applicability of positron annihilation spectroscopy techniques to the defect analysis of metals, they have only been used sparingly to monitor the microstructural evolution of additively manufactured metals. Molybdenum and molybdenum with a dilute addition (0.1 wt%) of nano-sized silicon carbide, prepared via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) at four different scan speeds: 100, 200, 400, and 800 mm/s, were studied by PALS and compared with electron backscatter diffraction analysis. The aim of this study was to clarify …

Ads-B Classification Using Multivariate Long Short-Term Memory–Fully Convolutional Networks And Data Reduction Techniques, Sarah Bolton, Richard Dill, Michael R. Grimaila, Douglas Hodson Feb 2023

Ads-B Classification Using Multivariate Long Short-Term Memory–Fully Convolutional Networks And Data Reduction Techniques, Sarah Bolton, Richard Dill, Michael R. Grimaila, Douglas Hodson

Faculty Publications

Researchers typically increase training data to improve neural net predictive capabilities, but this method is infeasible when data or compute resources are limited. This paper extends previous research that used long short-term memory–fully convolutional networks to identify aircraft engine types from publicly available automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) data. This research designs two experiments that vary the amount of training data samples and input features to determine the impact on the predictive power of the ADS-B classification model. The first experiment varies the number of training data observations from a limited feature set and results in 83.9% accuracy (within 10% of …

Data Augmentation For Neutron Spectrum Unfolding With Neural Networks, James Mcgreivy, Juan J. Manfredi, Daniel Siefman Jan 2023

Data Augmentation For Neutron Spectrum Unfolding With Neural Networks, James Mcgreivy, Juan J. Manfredi, Daniel Siefman

Faculty Publications

Neural networks require a large quantity of training spectra and detector responses in order to learn to solve the inverse problem of neutron spectrum unfolding. In addition, due to the under-determined nature of unfolding, non-physical spectra which would not be encountered in usage should not be included in the training set. While physically realistic training spectra are commonly determined experimentally or generated through Monte Carlo simulation, this can become prohibitively expensive when considering the quantity of spectra needed to effectively train an unfolding network. In this paper, we present three algorithms for the generation of large quantities of realistic and …

Excerpt: Satnav SDRs present many benefits in terms of flexibility and configurability. However, due to the high bandwidth signals involved in satnav SDR processing, the software must be highly optimized for the host platform in order to achieve acceptable runtimes. Modules such as sample decoding, carrier replica generation, carrier wipeoff, and correlation are computationally intensive components that benefit from accelerations.

Live-Sky Gnss Signal Processing Using A Dual-Polarized Antenna Array For Multipath Mitigation, Eric Hahn, Sanjeev Gunawardena, Chris Bartone Jan 2023

Live-Sky Gnss Signal Processing Using A Dual-Polarized Antenna Array For Multipath Mitigation, Eric Hahn, Sanjeev Gunawardena, Chris Bartone

Faculty Publications

Excerpt: Multipath results from reflections of Global navigation satellite signals (GNSS) signals arriving at a receiver that are delayed with respect to the desired line-of-sight (LOS) signals. The delayed signals distort the received LOS signals, thereby causing pseudorange and carrier phase measurement errors. Traditional multipath mitigation techniques include antenna gain pattern shaping (primarily to reduce ground multipath) and correlator gating techniques (such as narrow correlator and double-delta correlator [1]).

Resilience Monitoring For Multi-Filter All-Source Navigation Framework With Assurance, Jonathon S. Gipson, Robert C. Leishman Dec 2022

Resilience Monitoring For Multi-Filter All-Source Navigation Framework With Assurance, Jonathon S. Gipson, Robert C. Leishman

Faculty Publications

The Autonomous and Resilient Management of All-source Sensors (ARMAS) framework monitors residual-space test statistics across unique sensor-exclusion banks of filters (known as subfilters) to provide a resilient, fault-resistant all-source navigation architecture with assurance. A critical assumption of this architecture, demonstrated in this paper, is fully overlapping state observability across all subfilters. All-source sensors, particularly those that only provide partial state information (altimeters, TDoA, AOB, etc.), do not intrinsically meet this requirement. This paper presents a novel method to monitor real-time overlapping position state observability and introduces an observability bank within the ARMAS framework, known as stable observability monitoring (SOM). SOM …

Project Selection In Facility And Infrastructure Maintenance Organizations, Bayram M. Kurbanov Dec 2022

Project Selection In Facility And Infrastructure Maintenance Organizations, Bayram M. Kurbanov

Theses and Dissertations

The current Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) built infrastructure Facility Sustainment Restoration and Modernization (FSRM) portfolio management methodology results in an unbalanced project portfolio. The consequence of this unbalance is that majority of the funding goes towards buildings on the flightline and Facility Support Services activities do not get adequate funding which leads to further deterioration of those facilities. This research investigates whether decision support framework based on Value-Focused Thinking (VFT) process yields better project selection outcomes for facility and infrastructure maintenance organizations. To accomplish that, the investigation focuses on understanding current AFCEC decision support methodology, building an alternative …

Effects Of A Non-Uniform Magnetic Field On The Current Flow Of Silicon Photodiodes And Solar Cells, Jason J. Buranich

Theses and Dissertations

This research investigates an approach to improve efficiency of low-cost devices by applying an external arched magnetic field to p-n junction devices to observe the effect such a magnetic field would have on the flow of charge carriers. Electro-optic p-n junction devices of photodiodes and solar cells were designed and fabricated to incorporate the dimensions of commercially available neodymium magnets. The devices were placed in the magnetic fields created by the magnets then current and voltage characteristics were measured via a 4-point probe setup. These measurements were compared to measurements taken from the same devices when not in the magnetics …

Operational And Cost Analysis Of A Leo Radar-Based Satellite Constellation, Kyle O. Norbert

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a methodology to assess the ability of a Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation to successfully accomplish the GMTI mission in a cost-effective fashion. A simulation model was developed to test the coverage performance of 512 unique constellation designs. Significant factors were revealed by developing regression models that revealed the most critical constellation trade-offs on measures of performance. A Value-Focused Thinking (VFT) approach was applied to assign weights to a broad range of measures of performance from which the Pareto distribution on a cost-capability plot revealed cost-effectiveness. A novel measure of performance was developed and analyzed that accounted …

Analysis Of Propeller Designs Focusing On Lowering Sound Pressure Level Through Reduced Tip Loading, Luca A. Zeitvogel Dec 2022

Analysis Of Propeller Designs Focusing On Lowering Sound Pressure Level Through Reduced Tip Loading, Luca A. Zeitvogel

Theses and Dissertations

This research focused on potential design optimizations for small propellers. Designs sought to reduce noise generated without sacrificing efficiency by “unloading” the propeller tip by reducing angle of attack near the tip. To see if nearfield performance improvements translated to a reduction in farfield sound pressure level, farfield experimental acoustic testing was performed on propellers that had been measured experimentally in the nearfield. The farfield results provided limited insight due to an equipment malfunction during testing. However, a large data set was obtained, which provides opportunities for future analyses. A computational simulation sought to recreate some of the nearfield experiments …

A Statistical Analysis Of Sporadic-E Characteristics Associated With Gnss Radio Occultation Phase And Amplitude Scintillations, Daniel J. Emmons, Dong L. Wu, Nimalan Swarnalingam

Faculty Publications

Statistical GNSS-RO measurements of phase and amplitude scintillation are analyzed at the mid-latitudes in the local summer for a 100 km altitude. These conditions are known to contain frequent sporadic-E, and the S4-σϕ trends provide insight into the statistical distributions of the sporadic-E parameters. Joint two-dimensional S4-σϕ histograms are presented, showing roughly linear trends until the S4 saturates near 0.8. To interpret the measurements and understand the sporadic-E contributions, 10,000 simulations of RO signals perturbed by sporadic-E layers are performed using length, intensity, and vertical thickness distributions from previous studies, with the assumption that the sporadic-E layer acts …

Long-Distance Propagation Of 162 Mhz Shipping Information Links Associated With Sporadic E, Alex T. Chartier, Thomas R. Hanley, Daniel J. Emmons Nov 2022

Long-Distance Propagation Of 162 Mhz Shipping Information Links Associated With Sporadic E, Alex T. Chartier, Thomas R. Hanley, Daniel J. Emmons

Faculty Publications

This is a study of anomalous long-distance (>1000 km) radio propagation that was identified in United States Coast Guard monitors of automatic identification system (AIS) shipping transmissions at 162 MHz. Our results indicate this long-distance propagation is caused by dense sporadic E layers in the daytime ionosphere, which were observed by nearby ionosondes at the same time. This finding is surprising because it indicates these sporadic E layers may be far more dense than previously thought.

Adiabatic Shear Banding In Nickel And Nickel-Based Superalloys: A Review, Russell A. Rowe, Paul G. Allison, Anthony N. Palazotto, Keivan Davami Nov 2022

Adiabatic Shear Banding In Nickel And Nickel-Based Superalloys: A Review, Russell A. Rowe, Paul G. Allison, Anthony N. Palazotto, Keivan Davami

Faculty Publications

This review paper discusses the formation and propagation of adiabatic shear bands in nickel-based superalloys. The formation of adiabatic shear bands (ASBs) is a unique dynamic phenomenon that typically precedes catastrophic, unpredicted failure in many metals under impact or ballistic loading. ASBs are thin regions that undergo substantial plastic shear strain and material softening due to the thermo-mechanical instability induced by the competitive work hardening and thermal softening processes. Dynamic recrystallization of the material’s microstructure in the shear region can occur and encourages shear localization and the formation of ASBs. Phase transformations are also often seen in ASBs of ferrous …

Optimizing Switching Of Non-Linear Properties With Hyperbolic Metamaterials, James A. Ethridge, John G. Jones, Manuel R. Ferdinandus, Michael J. Havrilla, Michael A. Marciniak

Faculty Publications

Hyperbolic metamaterials have been demonstrated to have special potential in their linear response, but the extent of their non-linear response has not been extensively modeled or measured. In this work, novel non-linear behavior of an ITO/SiO2 layered hyperbolic metamaterial is modeled and experimentally confirmed, specifically a change in the sign of the non-linear absorption with intensity. This behavior is tunable and can be achieved with a simple one-dimensional layered design. Fabrication was performed with physical vapor deposition, and measurements were conducted using the Z-scan technique. Potential applications include tunable optical switches, optical limiters, and tunable components of laser sources.
