Verification Of Effectiveness Of Spot-Heating Technique In Reducing Spread Of Weld Lines In Injection Molded Plastic Products, Shah Ashikul Abed Sakar
Masters Theses
In producing a plastic part in an injection molding machine many physical factors related to the machine, such as injection pressure, holding pressure, heater temperature, etc. play their roles in the overall quality of the produced part. There are many aspects of the quality of a plastic part, such as part strength, part dimensions, and part surface finish. If any of those aspects gets compromised, the part is considered to have some defects. Of all defects found in injection-molded plastic parts, one most common defect is the presence of weld lines.Weld lines are formed when the flow of the molten …

Effect Of Frother Strength And Solids On Gas Dispersion In A Cavitation Sparger Measured By Electrical Resistance Tomography, Philip Holdsworth
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Gas dispersion in column flotation is critical for optimizing particle-bubble interaction and maximizing recovery. The effect of various flotation frothers on axial gas dispersion rates in a column flotation cell were measured using electrical resistance tomography (ERT). Tests included two-phase (gas-liquid) and three-phase (gas-liquid-solid) to determine the effect of mechanical parameters and the presence of solids on gas dispersion. Gas holdup can be measured using ERT and utilized in the determination of axial gas dispersion rate in the column. The ERT is constructed with two sensor planes making it possible to simultaneously capture gas holdup values at one cm and …

Cellulose Based Separator For High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries, Akshit Vaidya
Masters Theses
During the past two decades, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have gained great success in the field of portable devices, and currently, are penetrating to the market of vehicles. Compared to the fast development of LIBs, little efforts have been dedicated to the separator, which is one of the most important components of LIBs. Primarily, the lithium-ion battery separator has two functions, one is to prevent direct contact between the positive and negative electrodes, and the other is to provide a path for effective ionic transportation. Currently, the separator market of LIBs is dominated by polyolefin materials such as polypropylene, polyethylene, and …

This paper summarises the theory and functionality behind Questaal, an open-source suite of codes for calculating the electronic structure and related properties of materials from first principles. The formalism of the linearised muffin-tin orbital (LMTO) method is revisited in detail and developed further by the introduction of short-ranged tight-binding basis functions for full-potential calculations. The LMTO method is presented in both Green's function and wave function formulations for bulk and layered systems. The suite's full-potential LMTO code uses a sophisticated basis and augmentation method that allows an efficient and precise solution to the band problem at different levels of theory, …

Synthesis Of Epoxy Monoethanolamide From Bauhinia Monandra Seed Oil, Adewale Adewuyi, Rotimi A. Oderinde
Makara Journal of Technology
In this study, we synthesized epoxidised monoethanolamide (EMA) from Bauhinia monandra seed oil (BMO) via a simple reaction route. In this process, BMO was transesterified to obtain a mixture of methyl esters, which was subjected to a urea adduct complexation reaction. The unsaturated methyl esters (BME) from the urea adduct complexation reaction were then epoxidised using performic acid produced in situ in a one-pot reaction system. The epoxidised methyl esters were converted to EMA by reacting them with monoethanolamine (1:10). The progression of the reaction was monitored using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and the …

Student Works (2020-2029)
In search of an eco-friendly polymeric adsorbent for dye effluent treatment application, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/chitin/nanocellulose composites were synthesized. The composites were reinforced by oil palm empty fruit bunch fibers (OPEFB)-derived nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC). With addition of 1 wt.% NCC, a maximum improvement of 57.64% and 50.66% in tensile strength and Young’s Modulus were achieved, respectively. However, the PVA-based composites exhibited low resistance in aqueous medium. Hence, maleic acid (MA) was incorporated, in view of modifying PVA-based composites through cross-linking reactions. The effect of varying chitin content (10 wt.%-30 wt.%) and MA content (10%-50% based on total solid content of composite) …

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Self-piercing riveting (SPR) is one of the mechanical joining processes, and its application to Al/Fe dissimilar materials combination, which is hard to weld, is expanding in the automotive industry. The main process parameters in SPR are types of rivet and die, setting force, and rivet setting speed. Previously, the relationship between the main process parameters and output parameters such as cross-sectional characteristics and joint strength has been studied to optimize the SPR process. In practical applications, there are unexpected and abnormal process conditions such as poor fit-up, angular misalignment, edge offset distance, and inaccurate setting and pre-clamping forces, and their …
Through-Thickness Reinforcement And Repair Of Carbon Fiber Based Honeycomb Structures Under Flexure And Tension Of Adhesively Bonded Joints, Aleric Alden Sanders
Through-Thickness Reinforcement And Repair Of Carbon Fiber Based Honeycomb Structures Under Flexure And Tension Of Adhesively Bonded Joints, Aleric Alden Sanders
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Repair and reinforcement of composite honeycomb structures is an area of concern as higher demands are being placed on high strength, lightweight structural materials, such as carbon fiber reinforced plastics and corresponding honeycomb structures. A common issue with these structures is when a delamination in the facesheet may form and spread, leading to a failure scenario. An investigation of adding a through thickness reinforcement (TTR) to these structures at the sample level that undergo four-point-bending, tension, and joining methods is conducted throughout this thesis. The embedding of pultruded carbon fiber rods is found to be an ideal addition to composite …

Our results place this level 0.65 eV (±0.05 eV) above the valence band, a position closer to the valence band than the predictions of several recent computational studies. The crystal used in this investigation was grown by the Czochralski method and contains large concentrations of Mg acceptors and Ir donors, as well as a small concentration of Fe ions and an even smaller concentration of Cr ions. Below room temperature, illumination with 325 nm laser light …
Compaction And Residual Stress Modeling In Composite Manufactured With Automated Fiber Placement, Von Clyde Jamora
Compaction And Residual Stress Modeling In Composite Manufactured With Automated Fiber Placement, Von Clyde Jamora
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Automated fiber placement is a state-of-the-art manufacturing process that allows for complex layup patterns and can quickly place, cut, and restart composite tows. However, with this type of manufacturing process layup defects are inevitable, and manufacturing defects propagate after curing. Process modeling is the considered approach for exploring the defect prediction. Two different but related works were conducted, which are the thermochemical and hyperelastic model and the residual deformation model. For the model before cooling, a hyperelastic model and a thermo-chemical were made to simulate the compaction and heat transfer. Temperature dependent properties that are a function of degree of …

High contact resistance is one of the primary concerns for electronic device applications of two-dimensional (2D) layered semiconductors. Here, we explore the enhanced carrier transport through metal–semiconductor interfaces in WS2 field effect transistors (FETs) by introducing a typical transition metal, Cu, with two different doping strategies: (i) a “generalized” Cu doping by using randomly distributed Cu atoms along the channel and (ii) a “localized” Cu doping by adapting an ultrathin Cu layer at the metal–semiconductor interface. Compared to the pristine WS2 FETs, both the generalized Cu atomic dopant and localized Cu contact decoration can provide a Schottky-to-Ohmic contact …

Wideband Metasurface Antenna, Thomas A. Lepley
Theses and Dissertations
This effort explored design of metasurface antennas and evaluated their suitability for ultra-wideband applications (2 to 18 GHz). Six unit cell types were characterized. Eigenmode simulations produced frequency vs. phase data for the unit cells, from which impedance vs. gap size data was computed. A holographic design equation was used to generate the metasurface antenna designs. The unit cell simulations revealed that the assumption of single mode operation is a constraint for wideband designs. An 8" by 8" metasurface antenna with a Rogers 3010 dielectric and a design frequency of 10 GHz was fabricated and tested. It had a 1.5:1 …

In-plane compressively strained α-Sn films have been theoretically predicted and experimentally proven to possess non-trivial electronic states of a 3D topological Dirac semimetal. The robustness of these states typically strongly depends on purity, homogeneity, and stability of the grown material itself. By developing a reliable fabrication process, we were able to grow pure strained α-Sn films on InSb(100), without heating the substrate during growth nor using any dopants. The α-Sn films were grown by molecular beam epitaxy, followed by experimental verification of the achieved chemical purity and structural properties of the film’s surface. Local insight into the surface morphology was …

A Novel Self-Healing System: Towards A Sustainable Porous Asphalt, Shi Xu, Xueyan Liu, Amir Tabakovic, Erik Schlangen
Articles
Self-healing asphalt, aimed to produce a sustainable asphalt pavement using green technology, has been studied in the past two decades. Technologies including encapsulated rejuvenator and induction heating have been proposed, demonstrated in the laboratory, and gradually evaluated in field application. This paper looks into the synergy effect of the above two technologies, where induction heating serves as the asphalt damage repair mechanism, requiring just 2 min heating time and encapsulated rejuvenator will replenish (rejuvenate) aged asphalt binder and reinstate bitumen’s healing ability. Moreover, the increased temperature from induction heating could in turn accelerate the diffusion process of rejuvenator into aged …

Selection Of Blowing Agent For Metal Foam Production: A Review, Ankur Bisht, Brijesh Gangil, Vinay Kumar Patel
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
Metal foams are cellular solids in which gas is uniformly distributed throughout the metal matrix. One of the cheapest ways of evolving the gas is introducing the blowing agent in parent metal in liquid state. A blowing agent is defined as a material that decomposes under the presence of heat and releases gas which then propels the foaming process. The quality of final foam is influenced by several parameters such as composition, size and volume fraction of the blowing agent used. Different chemicals which can evolve gases such as carbonates and metal hydrides fit into the description of blowing agent. …

An Approach To Search The Potentiality Of Node In Bamboo Strip Reinforced Composites, Mohammad Irfan Iqbal, Rashed Al Mizan, Ayub Nabi Khan
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
Bamboo has recently entered the composite sector with some attractive labels such as 'green'. The current commercial manufacturing method of bamboo composite removes the node's portion of bamboo culm during bamboo processing. This method generates a high amount of solid waste materials along with processing complexity and the scientific merit of this practice is also questionable. This research investigates the effects of culm nodes on bamboo based composite properties. In this study an approach to produce bamboo strips reinforced epoxy composites and their mechanical properties (e.g. tensile, flexural and impact properties) were reported. It was demonstrated that mechanical properties of …
