Flexural Rigidity Characterization Of Retrofitted Frp Plates, Steven J. Makonis Jr., Stella B. Bondi, Zia Razzaq

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Presented herein is a procedure and numerical results for flexural rigidity characterization of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) plates retrofitted with various types of fabrics. The FRP plates were retrofitted with Kevlar® 49 (Aramid), Carbon Fiber (Harness-Satin H5), and Unidirectional Carbon Fiber (T700 Aerospace Grade) fabrics, respectively. The FRP plate flexural rigidity values were calculated with a central finitedifference iterative scheme while utilizing the experimental load-deflection relations based on bending tests. The tests were performed on each plate by applying a concentrated load at the center. A fourth-order partial differential equation of plate equilibrium was adopted to estimate the plate flexural …

Investigation Of Nbnx Thin Films And Nanoparticles Grown By Pulsed Laser Deposition And Thermal Diffusion, Ashraf Hassan Farha

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Niobium nitride films (NbNx) were grown on Nb and Si (100) substrates using pulsed laser deposition (PLD), laser heating, and thermal diffusion methods. Niobium nitride films were deposited on Nb substrates using PLD with a Q-switched Nd: YAG laser (λ = 1064 nm, 40 ns pulse width, and 10 Hz repetition rate) at different laser fluences, different nitrogen background pressures and deposition temperatures. The effect of changing PLD parameters for films done by PLD was studied. The seen observations establish guidelines for adjusting the laser parameters to achieve the desired morphology and phase of the grown NbNx films.

Improving Tribological Properties Of Cast Al-Si Alloys Through Application Of Wear-Resistant Thermal Spray Coatings, David Culliton, Tony Betts, Sandra Carvalho, David Kennedy

Articles

Flame Spray Thermal Spray coatings are low-cost, high-wear surface-treatment technologies. However, little has been reported on their potential effects on cast automotive aluminum alloys. The aim of this research was to investigate the tribological properties of as-sprayed NiCrBSi and WC/12Co Flame Spray coatings applied to two cast aluminum alloys: high-copper LM24 (AlSi8Cu3Fe), and low-copper LM25 (AlSi7Mg). Potential interactions between the mechanical properties of the substrate and the deposited coatings were deemed to be significant. Microstructural, microhardness, friction, and wear (pin-on-disk, microabrasion, Taber abrasion, etc.) results are reported, and the performance differences between coatings on the different substrates were noted. The …

Impact Of Intermetallic Precipitates On The Tribological And/Or Corrosion Performance Of Cast Aluminium Alloys: A Short Review, David Culliton, Tony Betts, David Kennedy Jan 2013

Impact Of Intermetallic Precipitates On The Tribological And/Or Corrosion Performance Of Cast Aluminium Alloys: A Short Review, David Culliton, Tony Betts, David Kennedy

Articles

The role of various intermetallic precipitates (IMP), or secondary phase particles, in governing the wear and corrosion performance characteristics of cast aluminium alloys is outlined in this brief review. Such alloys are especially important in transport applications where their low weight, low cost and recyclability make them very attractive. However alloy wear and/or corrosion behaviour often limit their industrial application and more work needs to done to extend their use into other areas. Careful control of IMP nucleation and growth rates may be beneficial, especially in alloys exposed to corrosive environments. Silicon, copper and magnesium are all important elements for …

Processing, Microstructural Evolution And Electrochemical Performance Relationships In Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Ayhan Sarikaya Jan 2013

Processing, Microstructural Evolution And Electrochemical Performance Relationships In Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Ayhan Sarikaya

Doctoral Dissertations

"The relationships between the processing parameters, microstructures and electrochemical performance of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) components were investigated. The operating regimes (i.e., reducing vs. oxidizing) as well as the elevated temperatures (e.g. 800°C) for their operation introduce several material challenges. Therefore, composite materials are employed to withstand operating conditions while providing sufficient electrochemical performance for fuel cell operation. Analyses on lanthanum-strontium manganite (LSM) - yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) compositions (45 vol%-55 vol%) by impedance spectroscopy demonstrated that two competing polarization mechanisms (i.e. charge-exchange and surface adsorption-diffusion of oxygen) limit performance. Optimization of microstructures resulted in total resistances as low …

Recycling Of Electronic Waste: Printed Wiring Boards, Alex Luyima

Doctoral Dissertations

"Pyrolysis and leaching are the dominant techniques applied in the recycling of waste printed wiring boards (PWBs). Waste PWB pyrolysis is a highly polluting technology and produces brominated pyrolysis oils in addition to hydrogen bromide (HBr) gas. Moreover, leaching as a treatment process of waste PWBs is not well investigated. In this work, the pyrolysis of waste PWBs has been studied with the aim of reducing the amount of brominated oils and HBr gas evolved. The effects of powder inorganic chemicals (CaO, CaCO₃, Fe₂O₃, Al₂O₃, Y-Zeolite, and ZSM-5) additions on the pyrolysis of waste PWBs has been studied through experiments …

Bioactive Glass Scaffolds For The Regeneration Of Load-Bearing Bone, Xin Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

"Biocompatible scaffolds that replicate the structure and function of bone would be ideal bone substitutes for structural bone loss, provided they have the requisite mechanical properties for reliable long-term loading. In this dissertation, strong porous scaffolds of silicate 13-93 bioactive glass, created with two different microstructures, were evaluated to determine their mechanical properties and their capacity to regenerate bone in a rat calvarial defect model. Scaffolds with an oriented microstructure of columnar pores were prepared by unidirectional freezing of camphene-based suspensions, followed by thermal annealing and sintering. By optimizing the freezing conditions, annealing time, and sintering temperature, constructs (porosity = …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Effect of friction stir welding (FSW) on microstructure and mechanical properties of oxide dispersion strengthened alloy MA956 was investigated. Fine grained microstructure was developed in the processed region with slight particle coarsening. Tensile behavior of the processed material was compared with that of the as-received material at room temperature. Results indicated that significant grain refinement during FSW compensated for the reduced particle strengthening contribution and enhanced tensile strength by 145 MPa without loss in ductility. Further analysis indicated a good agreement between experimentally measured yield strength and the strength calculated by Pythagorean superimposition of strengthening contribution in FSWed material. © …

Effect Of Inhomogeneous Deformation On Anisotropy Of Az31 Magnesium Sheet, Jidong Kang, David S. Wilkinson, Raja K. Mishra, Wei Yuan, Rajiv S. Mishra Jan 2013

Effect Of Inhomogeneous Deformation On Anisotropy Of Az31 Magnesium Sheet, Jidong Kang, David S. Wilkinson, Raja K. Mishra, Wei Yuan, Rajiv S. Mishra

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Inhomogeneous plastic deformation in AZ31 magnesium sheet has been studied during uniaxial tensile testing using digital image correlation and electron backscatter diffraction techniques. Large strain gradients develop on the sheet surface parallel and perpendicular to the loading direction while very little deformation occurs in the thickness direction. This lack of thinning leads to an abrupt fracture following the development of a premature but extensive diffuse neck but without any localized neck. The strain distribution on the sheet surface evolves nonlinearly with strain, impacting the measured plastic strain ratio, r-value. The results show that r-value should be measured at "points" rather …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The thermal conductivity (K), thermal diffusivity (α), and specific heat capacity (ρc) for a glass prepared from JSC-1A lunar soil simulant were measured using a combination of open photoacoustic cell (OPC) and thermal relaxation techniques. The values of K and α for the JSC-1A glass were (20 ± 3) mW/cmK and (14 ± 2) cm2/s, respectively, and are somewhat larger than those of the comparable silicate glasses. The specific heat capacity (ρc) for this glass was (1.44 ± 0.07) J/cm3K, which is a little smaller than the comparable silicate glasses. Materials with high values of K and α rapidly adjust …

Tailoring Spin-Orbit Torque In Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors, Hang Li, Xuhui Wang, Fatih Dogan, Aurelien Manchon Jan 2013

Tailoring Spin-Orbit Torque In Diluted Magnetic Semiconductors, Hang Li, Xuhui Wang, Fatih Dogan, Aurelien Manchon

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the spin orbit torque arising from an intrinsic linear Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling in a single layer III-V diluted magnetic semiconductor. We investigate the transport properties and spin torque using the linear response theory, and we report here: (1) a strong correlation exists between the angular dependence of the torque and the anisotropy of the Fermi surface; (2) the spin orbit torque depends nonlinearly on the exchange coupling. Our findings suggest the possibility to tailor the spin orbit torque magnitude and angular dependence by structural design.

Evaluating Cfrp-Masonry Bond Using Thermal Imaging, Joseph Christopher Ross

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study presents results from non-destructive testing to evaluate the degradation of the CFRP-masonry bond using thermal imaging. The goal of the research was to identify locations where there was evidence of bond deterioration that could subsequently be verified through destructive pull-off testing.

Four full-scale masonry walls were built outdoors at the University of South Florida in 1995 to evaluate the effectiveness of CFRP for repairing settlement damage. Two of the settlement-damaged walls were repaired using single layer, commercially available unidirectional CFRP systems that used Tonen (wall 3) and Henkel (wall 2) epoxies. These two walls were the subject of …

Kelvin Probe Electrode For Contactless Potential Measurement On Concrete-Properties And Applications, Michael Thomas Walsh Jan 2013

Kelvin Probe Electrode For Contactless Potential Measurement On Concrete-Properties And Applications, Michael Thomas Walsh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The practical feasibility of using a Kelvin Probe as a novel reference electrode in the measurement of both potential and polarization pulse response of reinforcing steel in concrete is demonstrated. Potential values measured using a KP reflect greater stability and repeatability than can typically be attained with conventional reference electrodes. Duplicate reinforced concrete beam test specimens with well-differentiated centrally corroding rebar segments were analyzed using both the Kelvin Probe (KP) and a conventional Saturated Calomel Electrode (SCE). Potential profile maps were developed using potential values recorded under static conditions with both the SCE and the KP. Nominal polarization resistance was …

Development Of Nanostructured Graphene/Conducting Polymer Composite Materials For Supercapacitor Applications, Punya A. Basnayaka Jan 2013

Development Of Nanostructured Graphene/Conducting Polymer Composite Materials For Supercapacitor Applications, Punya A. Basnayaka

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The developments in mobile/portable electronics and alternative energy vehicles prompted engineers and researchers to develop electrochemical energy storage devices called supercapacitors, as the third generation type capacitors. Most of the research and development on supercapacitors focus on electrode materials, electrolytes and hybridization. Some attempts have been directed towards increasing the energy density by employing electroactive materials, such as metal oxides and conducting polymers (CPs). However, the high cost and toxicity of applicable metal oxides and poor long term stability of CPs paved the way to alternative electrode materials. The electroactive materials with carbon particles in composites have been used substantially …

Corrosion Of Post-Tensioning Strands In Ungrouted Ducts - Unstressed Condition, Michael John Hutchison Jan 2013

Corrosion Of Post-Tensioning Strands In Ungrouted Ducts - Unstressed Condition, Michael John Hutchison

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Recent failures and severe corrosion distress of post-tensioned (PT) bridges in Florida have revealed corrosion of the 7-wire strands in tendons. Post-tensioned duct assemblies are fitted with multiple 7-wire steel strands and ducts are subsequently filled with grout. During construction, the length of time from the moment in which the strands have been inserted into the ducts, until the ducts are grouted, is referred to as the `ungrouted' period. During this phase, the steel strands are vulnerable to corrosion and consequently the length of this period is restricted (typically to 7 days) by construction guidelines. This investigation focuses on determining …

Synthesis And Investigations Of Type I And Ii Clathrates Of Group 14, Michael Blosser Jan 2013

Synthesis And Investigations Of Type I And Ii Clathrates Of Group 14, Michael Blosser

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Clathrates are a class of new materials that have an open-framework structure that allows guest atoms or molecules to be enclosed inside of their polyhedral framework. Varying the number, weight, and size of the guest species in a particular framework allows one to alter the physical properties of the clathrate. This relationship enables one to further the fundamental understanding of the physics and chemistry of the clathrate structure and use this knowledge to "tune" certain properties. This "tunability" of inorganic clathrates is of great interest as it allows one to optimize their physical properties; making them promising candidates for a …

Effect Of Cement Chemistry And Properties On Activation Energy, Andre J. Bien-Aime Jan 2013

Effect Of Cement Chemistry And Properties On Activation Energy, Andre J. Bien-Aime

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this work is to examine the effect of cement chemistry and physical properties on activation energy. Research efforts indicated that time dependent concrete properties such as strength, heat evolution, and thermal cracking are predictable through the concept of activation energy. Equivalent age concept, which uses the activation energy is key to such predictions. Furthermore, research has shown that Portland cement concrete properties are affected by particles size distribution, Blaine fineness, mineralogy and chemical composition. In this study, four Portland cements were used to evaluate different methods of activation energy determination based on strength and heat of hydration …

Analytical And Numerical Modeling Of Assembly Procedures Of Steel Fulcra Of Bascule Bridges, Sriharsha Garapati Jan 2013

Analytical And Numerical Modeling Of Assembly Procedures Of Steel Fulcra Of Bascule Bridges, Sriharsha Garapati

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

To model shrink-fitting in metal components, an analytical model for two long compound cylinders with temperature dependent material properties and interference between them is developed for calculating transient temperatures and stresses. A finite element model is developed for the same geometry which incorporated the temperature dependent material properties. A convergence study is performed on the finite element and analytical model. The finite element model is validated by comparing the approximations of finite element model with the analytical solution.

In an assembly procedure of fulcrums for bascule bridges, called AP1, the trunnion is shrink-fitted into a hub, followed by shrink fitting …

Liquid Phase Sintering Of 20bi(Zn₀.₅Ti₀.₅)O₃-80batio₃ Dielectrics With Bismuth-Zinc-Borate And Bismuth Borosilicate Glasses, David I. Shahin Jan 2013

Liquid Phase Sintering Of 20bi(Zn₀.₅Ti₀.₅)O₃-80batio₃ Dielectrics With Bismuth-Zinc-Borate And Bismuth Borosilicate Glasses, David I. Shahin

Masters Theses

"Dielectrics in the Bi(Zn₀.₅Ti₀.₅O₃-BaTiO₃ system (specifically 20BZT-80BT, in mol%) are promising candidates for high energy density capacitor applications due to broad temperature-dependent dielectric constant maxima and a relatively field-independent permittivity. Bulk samples require sintering temperatures of greater than 1180ºC to reach useful densities. Due to incompatibility of Bi with low-pO₂ processing, BZT-BT-based multilayer capacitors must utilize noble metal electrodes that resist oxidation during sintering. Sintering temperatures must be reduced to allow use of less expensive electrode materials (Cu, etc.). This work studies the reduced temperature sintering behavior and dielectric properties of BZT-BT sintered with 30 Bi₂O₃-30ZnO-40B₂O₃ and 50Bi₂O₃-25B₂O₃-25SiO₂ (mol%) liquid …

Structured Materials For Catalytic And Sensing Applications, Selma Hokenek Jan 2013

Structured Materials For Catalytic And Sensing Applications, Selma Hokenek

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The optical and chemical properties of the materials used in catalytic and sensing applications directly determine the characteristics of the resultant catalyst or sensor. It is well known that a catalyst needs to have high activity, selectivity, and stability to be viable in an industrial setting. The hydrogenation activity of palladium catalysts is known to be excellent, but the industrial applications are limited by the cost of obtaining catalyst in amounts large enough to make their use economical. As a result, alloying palladium with a cheaper, more widely available metal while maintaining the high catalytic activity seen in monometallic catalysts …

Electrocatalytic Oxidation Of Formic Acid On Pd/Ni Heterostructured Catalyst, Mingjun Ren, Liangliang Zou, Ju Chen, Ting Yuan, Qinghong Huang, Haifeng Zhang, Hui Yang, Songlin Feng Dec 2012

Electrocatalytic Oxidation Of Formic Acid On Pd/Ni Heterostructured Catalyst, Mingjun Ren, Liangliang Zou, Ju Chen, Ting Yuan, Qinghong Huang, Haifeng Zhang, Hui Yang, Songlin Feng

Journal of Electrochemistry

A Pd/Ni bimetallic nanostructured electrocatalyst was fabricated via a two-step reduction route. Owing to an epitaxial growth of Pd atoms on the surface of Ni nanoparticles, heterostructured Pd/Ni nanocomposites were formed and verified by high resolution transmission electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersion X-ray spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction confirmed that the as-prepared Pd/Ni nanocomposites possessed a single face-centered-cubic (fcc) Pd structure, probably due to a weaker diffraction intensity of metallic Ni and/or overlapping by that of Pd. The intrinsic catalytic activity on the Pd/Ni is higher than that on the Pd. Moreover, the durability of formic acid oxidation on the Pd/Ni was …

Electrochemical Performance Of Screen-Printed Composite Coatings Of Conducting Polymers And Carbon Nanotubes On Titanium Bipolar Plates In Aqueous Asymmetrical Supercapacitors, Xiaohang Zhou, George Z. Chen

Journal of Electrochemistry

Composites of conducting polymers (polypyrrole and polyaniline) with acid treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes were formulated into printable aqueous inks, with the aid of functional additives (benzethonium chloride as a surfactant with or without polyvinyl alcohol as a binder). The inks were screen-printed as fairly uniform coatings of various mass loading densities and areas (up to 75 mg cm-2 and 100 cm2) on thin titanium plates (0.1 mm in thickness). These screen-printed plates were used to fabricate both unit cell and multi-cell stack of asymmetrical supercapacitors with screen-printed negative electrodes of activated carbon (pigment black) in aqueous electrolytes …

Advances And Challenges Of Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: A Concise Review, Sanping Jiang Dec 2012

Advances And Challenges Of Intermediate Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: A Concise Review, Sanping Jiang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Fuel cell is an electrochemical energy conversion device to directly convert the chemical energy of fuels to electricity. Among all types of fuel cells, solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) operating at intermediate temperatures of 600~800 oC offer an attractive option that is much more fuel flexible than low temperature fuel cells such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells, and is suitable for a wide range of applications. However, two main challenges remain towards the commercial viability and acceptance of the SOFC technologies: the cost and durability. Both are critically dependent on the process, fabrication, performance, chemical and microstructural stability …
