Friction stir welding (FSW) technology combines heat input from friction and extreme plastic deformation to produce high-quality joints in aluminum and other alloy systems. This necessitates examining the final welded joint’s mechanical and structural properties. Post-weld heat-treated AA6061-T6 alloy that resulted from the application of a Cu donor stir–assisted (CDSA) friction stir welding (FSW) material was examined for crystal structure and mechanical properties. CDSA FSW samples were tested at a constant tool rotational speed of 1400 rpm and a welding translational speed of 1 mm/s. CDSA samples of 20% and 60% thickness of the AA6061-T6 base alloy were selected to …
Attrition Study Of Copper-Supplemented Iron-Based Oxygen Carrier For Chemical Looping Combustion, Neng Huang
Attrition Study Of Copper-Supplemented Iron-Based Oxygen Carrier For Chemical Looping Combustion, Neng Huang
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is a promising technology that can mitigate the carbon emissions for power generation. The cost of oxygen carriers (OCs) impedes the scale up of CLC. Compared to synthetic iron-based OCs, red mud (RM), an abundant iron-based solid waste from industry, is a cost-effective choice due to its intrinsic inclusion of both inert and catalytic phases that are crucial for CLC. It was anticipated that the addition of copper oxide to RM using a mechanical mixing method that can be easily scaled up would enhance both reactivity and oxygen transport capacity (OTC), and the heat of reaction …

Friction stir welding of high-strength materials such as steels is the impeded by the lack of the vast heat input needed to start the process. Contact friction is considered the most dominant source of heat generation for FSW steels which tends to cause severe wear conditions of the tool hear. To relieve the extreme wear conditions that occur on the tool heads because of FSW steels, we introduce the non-mixing Cu donor stir material to friction stir welding of aluminum alloys. The elastic properties of the Cu donor assisted friction stir welded aluminum alloys are measured using nanoindentation. The hardness …

Cold-Formed Steel Strength Predictions For Combined Bending And Torsion, Yu Xia, Robert S. Glauz, Benjamin W. Schafer, Michael Seek, Hannah B. Blum
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
Locally slender cross-section members, such as cold-formed steel Cee and Zee sections, are susceptible to significant twisting and high warping torsion stresses. Torsion considerations are complicated by whether it is derived as a first-order effect from loading or a second-order effect from instability. The current design for combined bending and torsion interaction has some limitations, including only considering the first yield in torsion and ignoring the cross-section slenderness in torsion. Previous work has derived a simple uniform equation to predict the bimoment capacity and two bimoment strength curves for local and distortional buckling under torsion only. This work is extended …

Bulk AlN single crystal has a great demand as a substrate material for AlGaN-based optical and electronic devices such as deep ultraviolet light-emitting diodes and high-power transistors. We have previously proposed a novel solution-growth method using Ni–Al solution with an in-situ observation system for solution growth of AlN crystal using electromagnetic levitation. In this paper, to investigate AlN formation behavior on 40 mol%Al–Ni droplets, two precisely synchronized high-speed cameras from the horizontal and vertical directions were installed. AlN formation behavior was evaluated quantitatively using computer vision image processing techniques. Based on the results, we demonstrated the growth of thick AlN …

High concentrations of phosphate are known to adversely affect the environment. Excess phosphate can lead to eutrophication that eventually fosters uncontrollable growth of aquatic plants and algae. This can result in depletion of oxygen content which adversely impacts underwater organism’s survival rates. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) consist of organic linkers in conjunction with metal ions or clusters arranged within a crystalline structure. They are highly porous and have larger surface area due to their ability to possess extensive void spaces while remaining bulky in nature. MOFs can absorb phosphate from aqueous solutions. We have investigated the use of commercially available …

Direct write printing, which is part of additive manufacturing (AM) technology, offers unique capabilities that can complement traditional methods of electronics fabrication. Printing of electrical interconnects via aerosolization is one of the areas in AM that is very important in electronics fabrication. Post-print sintering is a critical step in printed electrical interconnects because it strongly influences the electrical resistivity of the interconnects. Interconnects require the lowest possible resistivity to achieve better performance. Thermal sintering is the most common technique employed in printed interconnects. However, it is limited to substrates that can handle the high temperature requirement for sintering. For polymers …

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses
This project seeks to develop an updated version of a microwave imaging device for use in conjunction with breast MRI, improving upon existing technology and developing novel concepts for the device. It posits three primary redesign targets for updating the previous system: resizing the system height, making the device more iteration- friendly, and improving the overall manufacturability of the device by replacing custom components with commercially available alternatives. All three of these redesign targets are met in the new design, V2.0. The height is reduced by reducing antenna travel and height, embedding some components, and shortening the tank wall, resulting …
Application Of Multi-Scale Computational Techniques To Complex Materials Systems, Mujan N. Seif
Application Of Multi-Scale Computational Techniques To Complex Materials Systems, Mujan N. Seif
Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering
The applications of computational materials science are ever-increasing, connecting fields far beyond traditional subfields in materials science. This dissertation demonstrates the broad scope of multi-scale computational techniques by investigating multiple unrelated complex material systems, namely scandate thermionic cathodes and the metallic foam component of micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD) shielding. Sc-containing "scandate" cathodes have been widely reported to exhibit superior properties compared to previous thermionic cathodes; however, knowledge of their precise operating mechanism remains elusive. Here, quantum mechanical calculations were utilized to map the phase space of stable, highly-faceted and chemically-complex W nanoparticles, accounting for both finite temperature and chemical …

Understanding The Feasibility Of Improving Interfacial Properties In Direct Ink Writing Of Silicone-Polyurethane Resin Hybrid Material, Ayobami Samuel Akinfenwa
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The progress in materials engineering and the ability to make various models possible have made soft robotics a popular alternative to traditional robotics. Still, soft robots need various parts, like Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), batteries, cables, fittings, and more, to work correctly or to get attached to other complex parts. These parts can have different material properties, like elastic moduli, strength, etc. Because of these differences, mechanical failures happen at the points where two materials meet, making soft robots less durable and less lasting in real-life situations due to failure. Conventionally, the fabrication of soft robot parts is through moulding. …

Human hands are unparalleled in their dexterity, precision, and versatility, making them ideal models for robotic systems. Conventional robotic hands with standard joints cannot fully replicate human hand biomechanics, often resulting in increased weight, cost, and complexity. The primary objective is to develop a robotic finger that closely mimics anthropomorphic characteristics using computer-aided design (CAD) and rapid prototyping technology and to analyze its force and motion behaviors. The underactuated hybrid design combined soft and rigid elements and emphasizes passive adaptability to achieve dexterity. Rolling contact joints were applied to replicate varied rotational axis biomechanics. Springs and tendon routes were integrated …

Single Spring Gravity Compensator For A Multi Degree Of Freedom Manipulator Arm, Krittanai Sajjapongse
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Designing industrial robots requires utmost attention to power consumption and safety, especially in today's environment where humans work closely with robots. However, due to their robust and weighty structures, most robotic manipulators are typically engineered with high-power systems to handle payloads and counteract gravity. This research develops a novel gravity compensator system that employs a single spring to counterbalance a multi-DOF manipulator. This system combines cam follower systems with a square root mechanism. We provide a general equation that applies to multiple degrees of freedom. Additionally, we designed and built a 3-DOF manipulator prototype. The experiment shows that our gravity …

Stainless steel is widely used for many components and parts in coal-fired thermal power plants. AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel (FSS) is one common grade to combat the degradation at high temperatures in coal combustion atmospheres containing flue gas, coal ash, and soot (impure solid carbon particles). However, the effect of the solid carbon particles on the degradation of FSS needs to be clarified. Graphite powder was used to simulate solid carbon atmospheres for investigating the degradation of AISI 430 at high temperatures of 1150℃ to 1350℃ in coal-fired boilers. After the carbothermic reduction, the mass gain of a pre-oxidized …

Recycling of spent silver electroplating solutions has been investigated via electrowinning and electrorefining in comparison to zinc cementation technique in this research. Two different compositions of transparent and dark waste solutions were used having the remaining silver contents of 17.71 g⸳L-1 and 33.36 g⸳L-1 respectively. The waste solutions were used as an electrolyte in the first step of electrowinning at low current density of 0.015 A⸳cm-2. It was found that increasing electrowinning time from 4 h to 24 h increased the recovery of silver cathode for both types of waste solutions. The optimum electrowinning time was higher than 8 h, …
