A Fresh Revisit Of The Issues And Improvements In Impulse Invariance Filter Design For Infinite Impulse Response Filters, Chiman Kwan, Hal Ferguson

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The objective of this paper is to first present some issues with impulse invariance filter (IIF) design during the design of digital infinite impulse response (IIR) filters. Engineers are often confused about some inconsistent observations. For instance, if the impulse response of a digital filter is designed using the impulse invariance procedure, then the analog and digital filters’ frequency and step responses are very different. Two simple remedies are presented in this paper. One is a post-processing approach that scales the frequency and step responses of the digital filter by the sampling interval T. Another one is a pre-processing approach …

In recent years, smartphone sensors have become one of the most important and easily available sensors to facilitate people's lives, especially in health care and positioning (indoor environments). However, the data coming from smartphone sensors can be distorted during the user’s movement such as irrelevant movements, walk mode, and speed of walking. This distortion (noise) impairs the estimated distance accuracy (accumulative error) which increases with increasing walking distance. In addition, the accuracy of the distance traveled is affected by the user's speed, as the speed affects the step length. This work proposes a novel approach for calculating step length in …

Lightweight Neural Network Pipeline Model For Drone Collision Prediction System Using Limited Computing Resources, Rifqi Nabila Zufar

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis focuses on developing a drone collision prediction algorithm by adapting the Neural Network Pipeline (NNP) for use in limited computing resources devices. While NNP is effective with sufficient computation, its performance in constrained environments remains untested. To address this issue, an adaptation of NNP using post-training quantization is developed. This method effectively compresses the model by reducing the precision of the 32-bit floating point. This adaptation aims at reducing model complexity and offers significant benefits in terms of reduced model size, increased processing speed, and reduced power consumption. It results in the expense of prediction accuracy. The MobileNetV3Small …

Classification Of Bearing Failure In Adverse Industrial Conditions, Bawar Masih

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

In industrial environments, the detection of machinery reliability is frequently compromised by surrounding noise. This interference can lead to unexpected machine failures, resulting in costly downtime and extensive repair expenses. This study investigates the application of CNN and LSTM networks for fault diagnosis under noisy conditions to achieve high classification accuracy across varying SNRs. The CNN model, designed to capture localized features, proved particularly effective in extracting critical information from complex vibration data despite substantial background noise. In contrast, the LSTM model, while optimized for sequential data analysis, showed limited performance under high-noise conditions. Using the CWRU Bearing dataset, the …

Small Object Detection Techniques In Remote Sensing Images Using Aam And Raspp, Farhan Iqbal

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Remote sensing technology has advanced substantially, with significant research focused on identifying and recognizing small, distant objects within large-scale scenes. Despite these strides, the task remains difficult due to limitations in image resolution, varied object scales, dense object distribution, and diverse orientations. Current object detection methods often struggle to maintain the fine detail essential for small object detection, resulting in the loss of critical information. To address this, we introduce an Advanced Attention Mechanism (AAM) that combines a novel Combined Channel and Spatial Attention (CCSA) approach with Residual Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (RASSP). This integration enhances detection accuracy by preserving …

Analysis, Optimization, And Design Of Small-Scale Hybrid-Core Inductor Designs That Achieve High Energy Densities And Low Loss, Andrew B. Nadler

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

As the size of power converters and other electronics has shrunk over time, miniaturization of passive magnetic components, namely inductors and transformers, has fallen behind. Much of this is due to magnetic scaling laws, which degrade inductor performance at reduced sizes, in contrast to other common power converter components, such as transistors and capacitors, which are conducive to construction from smaller parallel cells. This does not mean high performance and small sizes are unachievable with magnetic components, but rather that intelligent and creative magnetics design is increasingly critical.

Typical inductors utilize a conductive winding wrapped around a magnetic core, with …

It is found that in the investigated transducers forced oscillations occur with the frequency of the input disturbing force, the amplitude of forced oscillations does not depend on the initial conditions and time, and in forced oscillations with damping there is always a shift of the oscillation phase compared to the phase of the input disturbing force. It is shown that the induction vibration transducer reproduces the measured vibrations with small distortions only in a relatively narrow frequency region at frequencies of the input …

Decaffeination by microbial degradation is currently the most optimal and low-cost approach, involving only microbial cells and/or their enzymes. The bacterium was characterized using a series of biochemical tests. Positive results were obtained from carbohydrate fermentation, citrate utilization, and catalase tests, while negative results were obtained from Voges-Proskauer (VP) and indole tests. Three different caffeine concentrations of 0.25%, 0.4%, and 2% were tested and measured through Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometry (GC-MS) analysis. The highest caffeine reduction (89.25%) was found when 0.25% caffeine was used in the media. Only a small amount of caffeine was reduced to 0.4% and 2%, with 34.78% …
