Design Of A Sigma-Delta Adc In 65nm Cmos Process, Michael Lee Thompson Iii

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Analog and digital signals both play a vital role in electrical engineering and the technology of today. As the role of electrical and computer engineers becomes more deeply involved in the development of new technology, an understanding of how these signals are utilized, and what they represent, is a necessity. Due to the inherent limitations involved with analog signals, there is a need for these signals to be accurately and efficiently converted to digital signals for processing. The job of the analog-to-digital converter, or ADC, is to receive this analog input signal (voltage or current) and create a digital representation …

Analysis Of An Isolated Bidirectional Ćuk Converter, Yeny Hau Chen May 2023

Analysis Of An Isolated Bidirectional Ćuk Converter, Yeny Hau Chen

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to perform an analysis of the isolated bidirectional Ćuk dc-dc converter topology and demonstrate the advantages and operation of this configuration through simulations using MATLAB/SimulinkTM and measurements collected from a 1.5-kW prototype tested at the Engineering Research Center (ENRC) laboratory of the University of Arkansas. The idea of integrating an active-clamp snubber circuit on each side of the converter, proposed by Dr. Sudip Mazumder from the University of Illinois, Chicago, limits the additional voltage stresses on the components due to the energy from the transformer’s leakage inductance. This is studied in this thesis to …

Stream Processor Development Using Multi-Threshold Null Convention Logic Asynchronous Design Methodology, Wassim Khalil May 2023

Stream Processor Development Using Multi-Threshold Null Convention Logic Asynchronous Design Methodology, Wassim Khalil

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Decreasing transistor feature size has led to an increase in the number of transistors in integrated circuits (IC), allowing for the implementation of more complex logic. However, such logic also requires more complex clock tree synthesis (CTS) to avoid timing violations as the clock must reach many more gates over larger areas. Thus, timing analysis requires significantly more computing power and designer involvement than in the past. For these reasons, IC designers have been pushed to nix conventional synchronous (SYNC) architecture and explore novel methodologies such as asynchronous, self-timed architecture. This dissertation evaluates the nominal active energy, voltage-scaled active energy, …

Analysis And Optimization Of The Two-Phase Series Capacitor Buck Dc-Dc Converter, Salahaldein Ali Aboajila Ahmed May 2022

Analysis And Optimization Of The Two-Phase Series Capacitor Buck Dc-Dc Converter, Salahaldein Ali Aboajila Ahmed

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Current sharing schemes for conventional multi-phase converters are based on sensing each phase current to deliver the current information to their controllers. In conventional buck converters, this fact may require a preset current sharing ratio at the expense of efficiency, which eventually requires a larger sensing circuit to achieve the sensing accuracy of each phase. Introducing the concept of automatic current sharing is one of the solutions to tackle this issue. Automatic current sharing (Current Sharing Mechanism CSM) is an advanced way to distribute heat generation in multi-phase switching topologies at full load. A two-phase series capacitor buck converter (2-pscB) …

Design Of A Bandgap Voltage Reference, Nicolaus Vail May 2022

Design Of A Bandgap Voltage Reference, Nicolaus Vail

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis details the design process of a bandgap voltage reference (BGR) integrated circuit in a 180 nm CMOS process. A BGR provides a constant DC voltage across a range of operating temperatures and supply voltages. By its nature, the circuit is intended as a reference, not to provide current, so the output would be connected to a very high impedance, such as the gate of a transistor. At 27°C, this design provides a 955 mV reference voltage given a nominal VDD of 3 V. From 20°C to 175°C, the output voltage has a variance of 7.2 mV (approximately 0.8%) …

Sigesn Light-Emitting Devices: From Optical To Electrical Injection, Yiyin Zhou Dec 2021

Sigesn Light-Emitting Devices: From Optical To Electrical Injection, Yiyin Zhou

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Si photonics is a fast-developing technology that impacts many applications such as data centers, 5G, Lidar, and biological/chemical sensing. One of the merits of Si photonics is to integrate electronic and photonic components on a single chip to form a complex functional system that features compact, low-cost, high-performance, and reliability. Among all building blocks, the monolithic integration of lasers on Si encountered substantial challenges. Si and Ge, conventional epitaxial material on Si, are incompetent for light emission due to the indirect bandgap. The current solution compromises the hybrid integration of III-V lasers, which requires growing on separate smaller size substrates …

Efficiently Estimating Survival Signature And Two-Terminal Reliability Of Heterogeneous Networks Through Multi-Objective Optimization, Daniel Bruno Lopes Da Silva

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The two-terminal reliability problem is a classical reliability problem with applications in wired and wireless communication networks, electronic circuit design, computer networks, and electrical power distribution, among other systems. However, the two-terminal reliability problem is among the hardest combinatorial problems and is intractable for large, complex networks. Several exact methods to solve the two-terminal reliability problem have been proposed since the 1960s, but they have exponential time complexity in general. Hence, practical studies involving large network-type systems resort to approximation methods to estimate the system's reliability. One attractive approach for quantifying the reliability of complex systems is to use signatures, …

Impact Of Wind Generation On Transmission Voltage Support During Weak Grid, Yugo Isogai May 2021

Impact Of Wind Generation On Transmission Voltage Support During Weak Grid, Yugo Isogai

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Today, there are concerns about the effects of high wind penetration on electric power system operations. This is due to the more distributed nature of wind turbine generation and the corresponding multi-path power flows on the electric power transmission grid. In particular, the higher line impendences associated with inverter-based wind generation results in larger voltage fluctuation under varying load. This may results in conditions where even after a fault condition has been cleared, the transmission system voltages may not recover. Therefore, this paper concentrates on the impact of weak grid condition for voltage instability. To approach it, a 6-bus system …

Memory Module Design For High-Temperature Applications In Sic Cmos Technology, Affan Abbasi May 2021

Memory Module Design For High-Temperature Applications In Sic Cmos Technology, Affan Abbasi

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The wide bandgap (WBG) characteristics of SiC play a significant and disruptive role in the power electronics industry. The same characteristics make this material a viable choice for high-temperature electronics systems. Leveraging the high-temperature capability of SiC is crucial to automotive, space exploration, aerospace, deep well drilling, and gas turbines. A significant issue with the high-temperature operation is the exponential increase in leakage current. The lower intrinsic carrier concentration of SiC (10-9 cm-3) compared to Si (1010 cm-3) leads to lower leakage over temperature. Several researchers have demonstrated analog and digital circuits designed in SiC. However, a memory module is …

Machine learning is a rapidly accelerating tool and technology used for countless applications in the modern world. There are many digital algorithms to deploy a machine learning program, but the most advanced and well-known algorithm is the artificial neural network (ANN). While ANNs demonstrate impressive reinforcement learning behaviors, they require large power consumption to operate. Therefore, an analog spiking neural network (SNN) implementing spike timing-dependent plasticity is proposed, developed, and tested to demonstrate equivalent learning abilities with fractional power consumption compared to its digital adversary.
