A High-Gain Wideband Antenna Employing Novel Partial Reflective Surfaces, Mia Maria Ulfah
A High-Gain Wideband Antenna Employing Novel Partial Reflective Surfaces, Mia Maria Ulfah
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In this dissertation, different partially reflective surfaces (PRS) are investigated to improve the gain and bandwidth of a Fabry–Perot cavity (FPC) antenna for wireless local-area network (WLAN) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication applications. Each of the proposed PRSs has the phase of a reflection coefficient that increases with frequency. This property of the PRS is required for a broadband characteristic of the FPC antenna, which is desirable for the intended applications. A U-shaped microstrip patch antenna (MPA) with a parasitic rectangular patch is used as a feed antenna. It is designed for operation in the WLAN and V2V frequency bands. The …

An Attention-Guided Image Super-Resolution For Scene Text, Tithnorakneath Em
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Scene Text Image Super-Resolution (STISR) is crucial in enhancing text recognition for low-resolution images, often degraded due to environmental and device limitations. While many existing STISR approaches leverage super-resolution techniques to refine image quality, they frequently need specialized mechanisms to extract text-specific features. Most existing methods were based on feature extraction methods that missed critical details, such as edges and text-background contrasts, that are usually important for recognition. In this work, we propose a new feature extraction method that uses Channel Attention and Spatial Attention mechanisms to emphasize features related to text, namely edges, contours, and spatial alignment. We add …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This dissertation investigates the optimal operation of local energy markets (LEM) within Thailand’s low-voltage distribution system (LVDS) to integrate renewable energy sources and electric vehicles (EVs). Despite extensive research, uncertainties persist in selecting optimal transaction partners and negotiating prices to maximize social welfare. Additionally, LEM operations should consider self-managing energy consumption and utilizing EVs to mitigate distribution network constraint (DNC) violations and leverage local resources to alleviate power imbalances during real-time electricity delivery. Local grid service programs, which offer incentives, face challenges in ensuring equitable participation and allocating fair incentives. Additionally, implementing a penalty scheme presents issues in fairness, mitigating …

Semiconductor Photonic Crystal Surface Emitting Lasers For High Power, High Brightness And High Speed Applications, Chhabindra Gautam
Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Photonic Crystal Surface Emitting Laser (PCSEL) is the promising third generation semiconductor laser technology as it addresses the challenges of the conventional semiconductor lasers (EEL/VCSEL) by providing single mode high power output with good beam quality (thus high brightness). The large area in plane coupling resulting from the multiple Bragg’s diffraction conditions in the periodic 2D photonic crystal cavities in the lasing cladding region leads to single mode operation over very large area. By model design engineering, such in plane lasing cavity can leak the light out of the plane, which result in surface emission. The ability to scale the …

Non-Invasive Monitoring Device For Early Detection Of Breast Cancer Related Lymphedema, Amy Prendergast
Honors Theses and Capstones
Breast Cancer Related Lymphedema (BCRL) is a common co-morbidity in cancer survivors following neoadjuvant therapies such as chemotherapy, radiation, and/or surgery. It is brought about by the disruption in the lymphatic system (think lymph node biopsy) that leads to a buildup of lymphatic fluid in the arm. Current diagnostic strategies for this condition are merely retroactive, and fairly limited in the parameters that are examined to ensure patient well-being long term. We hypothesize that with an approach that mimics bioimpedance spectroscopy analysis, we will be able to provide a clinical support tool that would better determine early stages of lymphedema …

Implementing Associative Learning Using Neuromorphic Robot, Vinay Kumar Pillalamarri
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Associative learning, a key cognitive process seen across the animal kingdom, enables organisms to form connections between stimuli and adapt their behaviors based on past experiences. A particularly powerful example is fear conditioning, where animals learn to associate a neutral stimulus with an aversive one, allowing them to predict and avoid potential threats. Inspired by this mechanism, this project implements associative learning on an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) to develop adaptive behavior through neuromorphic principles. Utilizing Nengo for neural modeling, the UGV learns to associate visual (red color) and tactile (vibration) stimuli through Hebbian learning, a biologically inspired synaptic adaptation …

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This work proposes a method of detecting physical damage to bearing races in a rotational assembly by means of magnetic reluctance sensors generating a signal from a rotating gear-tooth wheel. A nominally sinusoidal signal is generated based on the rotation of a gearwheel with regularly spaced voids and lands. Detection is based on the time variance of the signal periodically in relation to the gearwheel and the bearing damage. The purpose of this work is to propose a process to detect and classify bearing race defects using existing sensors and neural networks for hazardous area equipment applications.

Grid decarbonization and modernization are key requisites to combat global warming. Decarbonization entails the deployment of renewable energy sources, improving the energy efficiency of major consumers, and the electrification of the transportation and building sectors. Various US states and cities have pledged to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (e.g., the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) in New York aims to reduce emissions to 40% below 1990 levels by 2030 and then to 85% below 1990 levels by 2050) via a set of targets in terms of renewable energy, energy storage system (ESS) capacity, and the number of electric …

Platinum is known as the best catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) but the scarcity and high cost of Pt limit its widespread applicability. Herein, the role of the underlying substrate on the HER activity of dispersed Pt atoms is uncovered. A direct current magnetron sputtering technique is utilized to deposit transition metal (TM) thin films of W, Ti, and Ta as underlying substrates for extremely low loading of Pt (
