Makara Journal of Technology

Introducing unmodified organically clay/Na-montmorillonite (Na-MMT) was applied into plasticized poly(lactic acid) PLA to produce film composites by direct casting. Film composite structure, the crystallinity degree and form, and thermal properties were carried out using X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. The effect of Na- MMT to the tortuous path and the crystallinity degree in the plasticized film composites were calculated in oxygen barrier properties. Chromatogram film composites resulted in an intercalated structure that showed peak diffraction angle shift at about 0.2o. Then, a peak diffraction pattern was indicated in α-form crystal structure. Plasticized PLA has a crystallinity degree at 34%, …

Residual Strength Analysisof Asymmetrically Damaged Ship Hull Girderusing Beam Finite Element Method, Muhammad Zubair Muis Alie

Makara Journal of Technology

The objective of the present study is to analyze the residual strength of asymmetrically damaged ship hull girder under longitudinal bending. Beam Finite Element Method is used for the assessment of the residual strength of two single hull bulk carriers (Ship B1 and Ship B4) and a three-cargo-hold model of a single-side Panamax Bulk Carrier in hogging and sagging conditions. The Smith’s method is adopted and implemented into Beam Finite Element Method. An efficient solution procedure is applied; i.e. by assuming the cross section remains plane, the vertical bending moment is applied to the cross section and three-cargo-hold model. As …

Maneuverability Of Ships With Small Draught In Steady Wind, Daeng Paroka, Andi Haris Muhammad, Syamsul Asri

Makara Journal of Technology

Wind force and moment may force a ship to drastically decrease its speed and use a large drift angle as well as a large rudder angle in order to maintain its course. Ships with a small draught might have more risk in maneuvering to its point of view compared with a ship with a larger draught. This paper discusses maneuverability of a ship with a small draught in steady wind. The effect of wind on ship speed, drift angle, and rudder angle are investigated in a steady state condition. Five different ratios of wind velocity to ship speed from 1.0 …

Discrete Power Control In Heterogenous Networks, Yuanyuan Wang, Wibowo Hardjawana, Branka Vucetic

Makara Journal of Technology

In heterogeneous networks (HetNets) where femtocell base stations (FBSs) are deployed within the radio coverage of macrocell base stations (MBSs) to increase network capacity, co-channel interference limits overall system performance with universal frequency reuse. This paper investigates new distributed downlink discrete power control scheme for FBSs in HetNets with FBSs cooperation. The objective of the proposed power control scheme is to maximize the number of simultaneous FBSs transmissions in a single transmission wireless channel where each FBS is allowed to transmit only if the signal-to-interference-noise ratio (SINR) requirements for both FBSs and MBS users are satisfied. We apply a stochastic …

Analysis Of Arm Movement Prediction By Using The Electroencephalography Signal, Reza Darmakusuma, Ary Setijadi Prihatmanto, Adi Indrayanto, Tati Latifah Mengko, Lidwina Ayu Andarini, Achmad Furqon Idrus

Makara Journal of Technology

Various technological approaches have been developed in order to help those people who are unfortunate enough to be afflicted with different types of paralysis which limit them in performing their daily life activities independently. One of the proposed technologies is the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). The BCI system uses electroencephalography (EEG) which is generated by the subject’s mental activity as input, and converts it into commands. Some previous experiments have shown the capability of the BCI system to predict the movement intention before the actual movement is onset. Thus research has predicted the movement by discriminating between data in the “rest” …

Assembly Of A 3d Cellular Computer Using Folded E-Blocks, Shivendra Pandey, Nicholas J. Macias, Carmen Ciobanu, Changkyu Yoon, Christof Teuscher, David H. Gracias

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The assembly of integrated circuits in three dimensions (3D) provides a possible solution to address the ever-increasing demands of modern day electronic devices. It has been suggested that by using the third dimension, devices with high density, defect tolerance, short interconnects and small overall form factors could be created. However, apart from pseudo 3D architecture, such as monolithic integration, die, or wafer stacking, the creation of paradigms to integrate electronic low-complexity cellular building blocks in architecture that has tile space in all three dimensions has remained elusive. Here, we present software and hardware foundations for a truly 3D cellular computational …

Electromagnetic Characterization Of Materials Using A Dual Chambered High Temperature Waveguide, Jeffrey S. Sovern Mar 2016

Electromagnetic Characterization Of Materials Using A Dual Chambered High Temperature Waveguide, Jeffrey S. Sovern

Theses and Dissertations

Measurement of the electromagnetic properties of materials at high temperatures is important for industrial, scientific, medical, and aerospace applications [1]. Current high-temperature electromagnetic material characterization is a time consuming process that typically requires three days to collect data from one material specimen. For example, the standard high-temperature process involving rectangular waveguides [2] requires measurements of the sample (1), the empty waveguide (2), and a metal short standard (3) completed in separate heated runs over three days to perform the Nicolson-Ross-Weir inversion algorithm for computing permittivity and permeability. The technique developed here will reduce the high-temperature measurement process from three days …

Ray-Based Statistical Propagation Modeling For Indoor Corridor Scenarios At 15 Ghz, Qi Wang, Bo Ai, David W. Matolak, Ruisi He, Xin Zhou

Faculty Publications

According to the demands for fifth-generation (5G) communication systems, high frequency bands (above 6 GHz) need to be adopted to provide additional spectrum. This paper investigates the characteristics of indoor corridor channels at 15 GHz. Channel measurements with a vector network analyzer in two corridors were conducted. Based on a ray-optical approach, a deterministic channel model covering both antenna and propagation characteristic is presented. The channel model is evaluated by comparing simulated results of received power and root mean square delay spread with the corresponding measurements. By removing the impact of directional antennas from the transmitter and receiver, a path …

Oceanographic Instrument Simulator, Amy Chen Mar 2016

Oceanographic Instrument Simulator, Amy Chen

Master's Theses

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) established the Free Ocean Carbon Enrichment (FOCE) experiment to study the long-term effects of decreased ocean pH levels by developing in-situ platforms [1]. Deep FOCE (dpFOCE) was the first platform, which was deployed in 950 meters of water in Monterey Bay. After the conclusion of dpFOCE, MBARI developed an open source shallow water FOCE (swFOCE) platform located at around 250 meter of water to facilitate worldwide shallow water experiments on FOCE [1][2]. A shallow water platform can be more ubiquitous than a deep-water platform as shallow water instruments are less expensive (as it …

Out-Of-Loop Compensation Method For Op-Amps Driving Heavy Capacitive Loads, Shubham Gandhi Mar 2016

Out-Of-Loop Compensation Method For Op-Amps Driving Heavy Capacitive Loads, Shubham Gandhi

Master's Theses

It is well known that real op-amps do not share most of the desirable characteristics of an ideal one, particularly those of gain and output impedance. When presented with a capacitive load, such as a MOSFET or ADC, feedback in an op-amp circuit can quickly become unstable. This thesis studies and characterizes an op-amp’s output impedance and how its interaction with this type of load creates a parasitic pole which leads to instability. Applying ideas from feedback control theory, a model for studying the problem is developed from which a generalized method for compensating the undesirable circumstance is formulated.

Efficacy Of Physical Layer Preamble Manipulation For Ieee 802.11a/Ac, Benjamin W. Ramsey, Jonathan D. Fuller, Christopher W. Badenhop

Faculty Publications

Wireless physical layer manipulation is a recently discovered technique for selective packet obfuscation. This process exploits the unique and proprietary nature of transceiver designs rather than manufacturing imperfections. To date, preamble manipulation has only successfully been demonstrated on low data rate transceivers operating in the2.4 GHz band. This Letter investigates the effectiveness of preamble manipulation on common 5 GHz IEEE 802.11a and IEEE 802.11ac wireless transceivers for the first time. Herein it is demonstrated that the preamble short training sequence length can be manipulated to discern among the six transceiver designs under test with greater than 99% accuracy using fewer …

Improved Sensitivity Mems Cantilever Sensor For Terahertz Photoacoustic Spectroscopy, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Ivan R. Medvedev, Douglas T. Petkie Feb 2016

Improved Sensitivity Mems Cantilever Sensor For Terahertz Photoacoustic Spectroscopy, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., Ivan R. Medvedev, Douglas T. Petkie

Faculty Publications

In this paper, a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) cantilever sensor was designed, modeled and fabricated to measure the terahertz (THz) radiation induced photoacoustic (PA) response of gases under low vacuum conditions. This work vastly improves cantilever sensitivity over previous efforts, by reducing internal beam stresses, minimizing out of plane beam curvature and optimizing beam damping. In addition, fabrication yield was improved by approximately 50% by filleting the cantilever’s anchor and free end to help reduce high stress areas that occurred during device fabrication and processing. All of the cantilever sensors were fabricated using silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers and tested in a custom …

Histogram Of Oriented Phase And Gradient (Hopg) Descriptor For Improved Pedestrian Detection, Hussin Ragb, Vijayan K. Asari Feb 2016

Histogram Of Oriented Phase And Gradient (Hopg) Descriptor For Improved Pedestrian Detection, Hussin Ragb, Vijayan K. Asari

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper presents a new pedestrian detection descriptor named Histogram of Oriented Phase and Gradient (HOPG) based on a combination of the Histogram of Oriented Phase (HOP) features and the Histogram of Oriented Gradient features (HOG).

The proposed descriptor extracts the image information using both the gradient and phase congruency concepts. Although the HOG based method has been widely used in the human detection systems, it lacks to deal effectively with the images impacted by the illumination variations and cluttered background. By fusing HOP and HOG features, more structural information can be identified and localized in order to obtain more …

A Real-Time Information Based Demand-Side Management System In Smart Grid, Feng Ye, Yi Qian, Rose Qingyang Hu Feb 2016

A Real-Time Information Based Demand-Side Management System In Smart Grid, Feng Ye, Yi Qian, Rose Qingyang Hu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we study a real-time information based demand-side management (DSM) system with advanced communication networks in smart grid. DSM can smooth peak-to-average ratio (PAR) of power usage in the grid, which in turn reduces the waste of fuel and the emission of greenhouse gas. We first target to minimize PAR with a centralized scheme. To motivate power suppliers, we further propose another centralized scheme targeting minimum power generation cost. However, customers may not be motivated by a centralized scheme since such a scheme requires total control and privacy from them. A centralized scheme also requires too much real-time …

Generalized Dft: Extensions In Communications, Yuewen Wang Jan 2016

Generalized Dft: Extensions In Communications, Yuewen Wang

Dissertations

Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) is a restricted version of Generalized DFT (GDFT) which offers a very limited number of sets to be used in a multicarrier communication system. In contrast, as an extension on Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) from the linear phase to non-linear phase, the proposed GDFT provides many possible carrier sets of various lengths with comparable or better performance than DFT. The availability of the rich library of orthogonal constant amplitude transforms with good performance allows people to design adaptive systems where user code allocations are made dynamically to exploit the current channel conditions in order to deliver …

An Fpga Implementation Of A Sleep Enabled Pon System, Zheyu Liu

Theses

Owing to the growing demand for bandwidth-hungry video-on-demand applications, Passive Optical Network (PON) has been widely considered as one of the most promising solutions for broadband access. Environmental concerns motivated network designers to lower energy consumption of optical access networks. A well-known approach to reduce energy consumption is to allow network elements to switch to the sleep mode.

In this framework, an improved Optical network Unit (ONU) architecture in TDM-PON is proposed to reduce the handover time of status switching. Energy-saving performances of current and improved architectures are compared in different scenarios. The simulation results show that by applying a …

An Adaptive Security Protocol For A Wireless Sensor‐Based Monitoring Network In Smart Grid Transmission Lines, Xuping Zhang, Feng Ye, Sucheng Fan, Jinghong Guo, Guoliang Xu, Yi Qian

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we propose a new security protocol for a wireless sensor network, which is designed for monitoring long range power transmission lines in smart grid. Part of the monitoring network is composed of optical fiber composite over head ground wire (OPGW), thus it can be secured with conventional security protocol. However, the wireless sensor network between two neighboring OPGW gateways remains vulnerable. Our proposed security protocol focuses on the wireless sensor network part, it provides mutual authentication, data integrity, and data confidentiality for both uplink and downlink transmissions between the sensor nodes and the OPGW gateway. Besides, our …

A new method for displaying electrical properties for integrated circuit (IC) layout designs provides for improved human visualization of those properties and comparison of as designed layout design parameters to as specified layout design parameters and to as manufactured layout parameters. The method starts with a circuitry as designed layout in a first digital format, extracts values for electrical properties from that circuitry as designed layout then annotates those values back into the first digital format. The annotated circuitry as designed layout is then converted from the first digital format to a second digital format that can be converted to …

Rider's Aid, E-Bike Kit, Song Wang Jan 2016

Rider's Aid, E-Bike Kit, Song Wang

All Undergraduate Projects

When it comes to observing the schema of upgrading bicycles into a hybrid model, the existing model usually costs hundreds of dollars and more than one hour of installation since it requires the process of replacing a wheel or even purchasing a new bicycle. But in fact, it was not necessary to remove the original wheel because the key to achieve power drive could be taken as an external function added to the primitive bike. Under the conditions of retaining applicability and safety that transportation should never get rid of, this project was focusing on reducing budget and saving time …

Analysis Of Sensor Coil Implemented In Maxwell-Wien Bridge Circuit For Detecting Ferrous And Non-Ferrous Particles, Kue Z. Yang, Robert J. Veillette, Joan E. Carletta

Electrical and Computer Engineering Student Research

This paper presents an analysis of a wear debris sensor coil implemented in a Maxwell-Wien Bridge circuit used in detecting ferrous and non-ferrous particles. The sensor coil is designed to have a diameter approximately 15 times larger than the largest particle being detected. To detect particles up to 2 mm in diameter, a coil 30 mm in diameter was constructed. Simulations of the experiment indicate that the available particles should be detectable by the sensor coil. However, experimental results indicate that the Maxwell-Wien Bridge does not detect the available particles. Further simulations are presented accounting for parasitic capacitance of the …

Supporting Business Privacy Protection In Wireless Sensor Networks, Nan Feng, Zhiqi Hao, Sibo Yang, Harris Wu

Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications

With the pervasive use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) within commercial environments, business privacy leakage due to the exposure of sensitive information transmitted in a WSN has become a major issue for enterprises. We examine business privacy protection in the application of WSNs. We propose a business privacy-protection system (BPS) that is modeled as a hierarchical profile in order to filter sensitive information with respect to enterprise-specified privacy requirements. The BPS aims at solving a tradeoff between metrics that are defined to estimate the utility of information and the business privacy risk. We design profile, risk assessment, and filtration agents …

Ingan Leds For General Lighting: Overcoming Efficiency Droop At High Current Injection, Nicolas Andrade

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

According to the Energy Information Administration's Annual Energy Outlook report in 2011, the United States alone consumed 97.8 quadrillion Btus (quads) of primary energy in 2010. Roughly 41% of this energy was consumed for electricity use, with 18% of the electricity being dedicated to lighting. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated light consumption of this scale translates to CO2 production equivalent to 70% of the emissions from all of the world's light passenger vehicles. Pollution levels at this rate caused 18,200 premature deaths, 2,100,000 days of medication, and 29 million cases of lower respiratory symptoms.

Smart Grasping Using Laser And Tactile Array Sensors For Ucf-Manus- An Intelligent Assistive Robotic Manipulator, Kiran Prakash Jan 2016

Smart Grasping Using Laser And Tactile Array Sensors For Ucf-Manus- An Intelligent Assistive Robotic Manipulator, Kiran Prakash

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents three improvements in the UCF MANUS Assistive Robotic Manipulator's grasping abilities. Firstly, the robot can now grasp objects that are deformable, heavy and have uneven contact surfaces without undergoing slippage during robotic operations, e.g. paper cup, filled water bottle. This is achieved by installing a high precision non-contacting Laser sensor1 that runs with an algorithm that processes raw-input data from the sensor, registers smallest variation in the relative position of the object with respect to the gripper. Secondly, the robot can grasp objects that are as light and small as single cereal grain without deforming it. To …

Design And Optimization Of Superjunction Vertical Dmos Power Transistors Using Sentaurus Device Simulation, Raul Mendoza Macias

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vertical double-diffused metal oxide semiconductor (VDMOS) power transistor has been studied. The use of superjunction (SJ) in the drift region of VDMOS has been evaluated using three-dimensional device simulation. All relevant physical models in Sentaurus are turned on. The VDMOS device doping profile is obtained from process simulation. The superjunction VDMOS performance in off-state breakdown voltage and specific on-resistance is compared with that in conventional VDMOS structure. In addition, electrical parameters such as threshold voltage and charge balance are also examined. Increasing the superjunction doping in the drift region of VDMOS reduces the on-resistance by 26%, while maintaining the same …
