Rf Circuit Designs For Reliability And Process Variability Resilience, Ekavut Kritchanchai
Rf Circuit Designs For Reliability And Process Variability Resilience, Ekavut Kritchanchai
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) radio frequency (RF) circuit design has been an ever-lasting research field. It has gained so much attention since RF circuits offer high mobility and wide-band efficiency, while CMOS technology provides the advantage of low cost and high integration capability. At the same time, CMOS device size continues to scale to the nanometer regime. Reliability issues with RF circuits have become more challenging than ever before. Reliability mechanisms, such as gate oxide breakdown, hot carrier injection, negative bias temperature instability, have been amplified as the device size shrinks. In addition, process variability becomes a new design …
Electron Beam Induced Deposition Of Highly Conductive Copper Nanowires From Bulk Liquids, Amjad M. Syam
Electron Beam Induced Deposition Of Highly Conductive Copper Nanowires From Bulk Liquids, Amjad M. Syam
Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering
Electron-beam induced deposition (EBID) is a position-controlled technique that can directly fabricate nanometer-sized structures in functional materials. In the standard process, a gaseous precursor delivers the desired substance to the substrate for deposition. However, the material purity from these precursors is typically poor, which often negatively affects the functional properties of the deposit. Recently, bulk liquid precursors have been investigated as promising reactants for high purity deposition without the need for post-processing. In this work, EBID from bulk liquids is shown to yield highly conductive nanowire deposits. Aqueous solutions containing copper sulfate (CuSO4) and sulfuric acid (H2 …

Performance Evaluation Of Connectivity And Capacity Of Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks, Osama Al-Tameemi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent measurements on radio spectrum usage have revealed the abundance of under- utilized bands of spectrum that belong to licensed users. This necessitated the paradigm shift from static to dynamic spectrum access (DSA) where secondary networks utilize unused spectrum holes in the licensed bands without causing interference to the licensed user. However, wide scale deployment of these networks have been hindered due to lack of knowledge of expected performance in realistic environments and lack of cost-effective solutions for implementing spectrum database systems. In this dissertation, we address some of the fundamental challenges on how to improve the performance of DSA …

Previous studies reported a delayed increase of sensitivity to electroporation (termed "electrosensitization") in mammalian cells that had been subjected to electroporation. Electrosensitization facilitated membrane permeabilization and reduced survival in cell suspensions when the electric pulse treatments were split in fractions. The present study was aimed to visualize the effect of sensitization and establish its utility for cell ablation. We used KLN 205 squamous carcinoma cells embedded in an agarose gel and cell spheroids in Matrigel. A local ablation was created by a train of 200 to 600 of 300-ns pulses (50 Hz, 300-600 V) delivered by a two-needle probe with …

Aeronautical Communication (AC) systems are likely to be a part of future tiered communication network structures. Therefore maintaining a robust AC link with a minimum power burden on the host platform has a critical importance. In this paper, we analyze the AC systems from a link budget analysis point of view and define the requirements for the parameters of link budget with an emphasize on antenna gains. First, we study the link budget analysis in an AC system. Then, we present a mathematical framework to provide an end-to-end link budget analysis utilizing the platform kinematics. Finally, we present the numerical …

Fabrication of microchannels and associated electrodes to generate electrokinetic phenomena often involves costly materials and considerable effort. In this study, we used graphite pencil-leads as low cost, disposable 3D electrodes to investigate various electrokinetic phenomena in straight cylindrical microchannels, which were themselves fabricated by using a graphite rod as the microchannel mold. Individual pencil-leads were employed as the micro-electrodes arranged along the side walls of the microchannel. Efficient electrokinetic phenomena provided by the 3D electrodes, including alternating current electroosmosis (ACEO), induced-charge electroosmosis (ICEO), and dielectrophoresis (DEP), were demonstrated by the introduced pencil-lead based microfluidic devices. The electrokinetic phenomena were characterized …

Corrosion of embedded steel in reinforced concrete (RC) is a world-wide problem, that reduces structural performance and lifespan. Chloride attack may be a result of seawater, de-icing salts or contaminated admixtures, brought on by ingress of chlorides into the concrete. Electrochemical Chloride Extraction (ECE) is a non-destructive treatment for contaminated RC structures, that due to uncertainty of treatment times and applied current densities, is only 50% effective. It is often diesel powered has an environmental impact and often very costly due to the long treatment times. To improve the efficiency of ECE the influences of concrete resistance, cement type and …
Solid-State Transformers For Interfacing Solar Panels To The Power Grid: An Optimum Design Methodology Of A High Frequency Transformer For Dc-Dc Converter Applications, Kenny George
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
Nowadays the use of power electronic interfaces to integrate distributed generation with the power grid is becoming relevant due to the increased penetration of renewable energy sources like solar, and the continued interest to move to a smarter and more robust electric grid. Those interfaces, which also provide a voltage step-up or step-down function, are of particular interest because renewable energy sources do not always have voltages compatible with the connecting grid. Among them, the so-called “power electronic transformer” or “solid-state transformer” (SST) is the focus of significant research. Advantages such as bidirectional power flow, improved system control, reduced size, …

Development Of Iii-Sb Based Technologies For P-Channel Mosfet In Cmos Applications, Shailesh Kumar Madisetti
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The continuous scaling of silicon CMOS predicts the end of roadmap due to the difficulties such as that arise from electrostatic integrity, design complexities, and power dissipation. These fundamental and practical limitations bring the need for innovative design architectures or alternate materials with higher carrier transport than current Si based materials. New device designs such as multigate/gate-all-around architectures improve electrostatics while alternate materials like III-Vs such as III-As for electrons and III-Sbs for holes increase operational speed, lower power dissipation and thereby improve performance of the transistors due to their low effective mass and faster transport properties. Further, application of …

The advent of integrated circuit (chip) multiprocessors (CMPs) combined with the continuous reduction in device physical size (technology scaling) to the sub-nanometer regime will result in an exponential increase in the number of processing cores that can be integrated within a single chip. Today’s CMPs already support tens to low hundreds of cores and both industry and academic roadmaps project that future chips will have thousands of cores. Therefore, while there are open questions on how to harness the computing power offered by CMPs, the design of power-efficient and compact on-chip interconnection networks that connects cores, caches and memory controllers …

Adaptive Switched Capacitor Voltage Boost For Thermoelectric Generation, Rene A. Brito
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Thermoelectric generators (TEG) and other forms of energy harvesting often provide voltages that are not directly usable by traditional electronics as levels are too low from the TEG. While increasing the number of thermoelectric elements can ultimately increase the power output, there is a tradeoff between size and power. By implementing charge pumps, a proposed circuit technique is described that can boost the TEG output to levels that can be used for energy harvesting applications. Current voltage boost circuits for TEGs simply boost a voltage by a set amount. The proposed circuit consists of an analog chip, to provide several …

Blind Image Deconvolution Based On Sparsity: Theoretical Justification And Improvement Of State-Of-The-Art Techniques, Fernando Cervantes
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Observed signals and images are distorted by noise and blurring. In precise terms, blurring is a convolution of the original image with some blurring function. From this viewpoint, to reconstruct the original image, we need to reverse the effects of this convolution, i.e., to ``deconvolve'' the image. Many efficient methods for image deconvolution are known. However, most of these methods assume that we know the blurring function -- or at least that we have some partial information about the blurring function. In some practical situations, however, we do not have this information. In such situations, we need to perform, blind …

We consider a wireless sensor network (WSN), consisting of several sensors and a fusion center (FC), which is tasked with solving an $M$-ary hypothesis testing problem. Sensors make $M$-ary decisions and transmit their digitally modulated decisions over orthogonal channels, which are subject to Rayleigh fading and noise, to the FC. Adopting Bayesian optimality criterion, we consider training and non-training based distributed detection systems and investigate the effect of imperfect channel state information (CSI) on the optimal maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) fusion rules and detection performance, when the sum of training and data symbol transmit powers is fixed. Our results …

Model Selection (MS) is an important aspect of machine learning, as necessitated by the No Free Lunch theorem. Briefly speaking, the task of MS is to identify a subset of models that are optimal in terms of pre-selected optimization criteria. There are many practical applications of MS, such as model parameter tuning, personalized recommendations, A/B testing, etc. Lately, some MS research has focused on trading off exactness of the optimization with somewhat alleviating the computational burden entailed. Recent attempts along this line include metaheuristics optimization, local search-based approaches, sequential model-based methods, portfolio algorithm approaches, and multi-armed bandits. When the microgrid disconnects from the main grid in response to, say, upstream disturbance or voltage fluctuation and goes to islanding mode, both voltage and frequency at all locations in the microgrid have to be regulated to nominal values in a short amount of time before the operation of protective relays. Motivated by this, we studied the application of intelligent pinning of distributed cooperative secondary control of distributed generators in islanded microgrid operation in a power system. In the first part, the problem of single and multi-pinning of distributed cooperative secondary control of DGs in a microgrid is formulated. It …

Investigation Of The Effect Of Rain On Sea Surface Salinity, Andrea Santos Garcia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Aquarius/SAC-D mission provided Sea Surface Salinity (SSS), globally over the ocean, for almost 4 years. As a member of the AQ/SAC-D Cal/Val team, the Central Florida Remote Sensing Laboratory has analyzed these salinity measurements in the presence of precipitation and has noted the high correlation between the spatial patterns of reduced SSS and the spatial distribution of rain. It was determined that this is the result of a cause and effect relation, and not SSS measurement errors. Thus, it is important to understand these salinity changes due to seawater dilution by rain and the associated near-surface salinity strati?cation. This …
