Interactive Hybrid Computer Program As An Aid For Teaching Hydrology, Arif Hikmet Atali May 1974

Interactive Hybrid Computer Program As An Aid For Teaching Hydrology, Arif Hikmet Atali

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The science of water resource planning and management implies the utilization of available water supplies in order to meet specific goals and objectives (Hill and Riley, 1972). Essential to effective planning and management is the consideration and analysis of all possible alternatives. Past research at Utah State University has demonstrated that the hybrid computer simulation of hydrologic processes is a reliable planning technique which provides the capability to examine many possible alternatives in a short period of time (Hill et al., 1970; Riley, 1970; and Riley et al., 1967). This technique, because of its interactive characteristics, is valuable also in …

Finite Difference Solution For Drainage Of Heterogeneous Sloping Lands, Fahd Salih Natur May 1974

Finite Difference Solution For Drainage Of Heterogeneous Sloping Lands, Fahd Salih Natur

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The two-dimensional problem of tile drainage on sloping heterogeneous lands was considered. The land surface and the impermeable boundaries of the problem were of a general shape. The flow in both the saturated and unsaturated zones was considered and the system was treated as one composite system. The problem was solved by a finite difference numerical method using the successive over-relaxation iterative (SOR) method for the steady state case with no local recharge, and a combined Newton inner iteration and successive over- relaxation outer iteration for the transient state case with local recharge. Both the rising water table and the …

Phosphorus Budget Of The Hyrum Reservoir - Little Bear River System, William A. Luce May 1974

Phosphorus Budget Of The Hyrum Reservoir - Little Bear River System, William A. Luce

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Phosphorus concentrations in the water of the Hyrum Reservoir - Little Dear River Watershed were determined by collecting 12 samples every two weeks over a seven month period and analyzing them for dissolved orthophosphate, total dissolved phosphorus, and total unfiltered phosphorus.

The concentrations obtained were used in conjunction with a water budget to determine a phosphorus budget. Apparent major inputs of phosphorus to the reservoir included a trout farm and runoff from agricultural land in the watershed.

Statistical analyses of the data were made to determine what effect precipitation, streamflow, and mileage downstream had on the concentrations of phosphorus in …

An Evaluation Of In-Stream Structures Designed To Provide Fish Habitat, Charles H. Call Jr. May 1974

An Evaluation Of In-Stream Structures Designed To Provide Fish Habitat, Charles H. Call Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In-stream concrete structures were studied through model tests and river tests. The model studies indicated that four designs provided good habitat in the model stream. These structures were the inverted weir, the "V" structure, the slab with legs and the cylinder. Through the river studies it was determined that these structures did not influence enough of the total river area to be effective in providing good fish habitat. Also an appreciable amount of yearly maintenance would be required to free the structures from silting in, debris, and vandalism. The slab with legs was the only promising structure.

Loads On Box Culverts Under High Embankments, Harry F. Girdler Apr 1974

Loads On Box Culverts Under High Embankments, Harry F. Girdler

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The structural design of culverts requires a reliable estimate of the earth pressures which will come to bear on the structure during and after construction of the embankment. The actual bearing pressure at a given time and under various conditions of differential settlement may be greater or less than the deadload of the fill or embankment over the structure. This report describes the instrumentation and construction of three box culverts designed by the imperfect trench method. A total of 42 Carlson earth pressure cells were installed in conjunction with strain gages and settlement measuring devices, including inverted settlement plates and …

Relationships Between Roadway Geometrics And Accidents (An Analysis Of Kentucky Records), Kenneth R. Agent Apr 1974

Relationships Between Roadway Geometrics And Accidents (An Analysis Of Kentucky Records), Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Statewide average and critical rates of accidents were determined from 1970-1972 Kentucky accident records for each type of rural highway. Four-lane undivided highways had the highest average accident rate; parkways (toll roads) had the lowest rate. The severity of accidents was related to types of accidents, highways, and traffic control and to safety belt usage. Accidents involving pedestrians were the most severe types; single-vehicle accidents ranked next highest in severity. Excluding accidents at railroad crossings, accidents which occurred on curves had the highest severity index. The use of safety belts was associated with reduced severity.

Raised Pavement Markers As A Traffic Control Measure At Lane Drops [No. 418], Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent Feb 1974

Raised Pavement Markers As A Traffic Control Measure At Lane Drops [No. 418], Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Raised pavement markers are an effective means of reducing erratic movements at lane-drop locations, particularly under nighttime driving conditions. The cost of raised pavement markers and their installation is nominal (approximately $150 per lane-drop location). It is recommended that raised pavement markers be installed at other lane-drop locations. Markers installed at locations described in this study have not been in place for a sufficient time to determine their durability; however, reports from other states indicate their durability is sufficient to render them economical. If raised pavement markers are installed routinely, steps should be taken to insure they are not damaged …

Optimization Of Single- And Double-Flash Cycles And Space Heating Systems In Geothermal Engineering, Talal Hussein Hassoun Jan 1974

Optimization Of Single- And Double-Flash Cycles And Space Heating Systems In Geothermal Engineering, Talal Hussein Hassoun

Dissertations and Theses

Two different problems of optimization in the utilization of geothermal energy are presented: First, the thermodynamic optimization for a geothermal power plant using a single- or double-flash process is considered; in this analysis, the optimum flash temperature giving the maximum power output is determined. Second, an economic optimization for space heating systems using geothermal energy is developed to obtain operating conditions for which the total (capital and operating) cost is a minimum.

Both graphical and analytical methods are used in the thermodynamic optimization to determine the optimum flash temperature. The graphical method is based on thermodynamic data provided by an …

Evaluating The Membrane Fecal Coliform Test By Using Escherichia Coli As The Indicator Organism, James B. Hufham Jan 1974

Evaluating The Membrane Fecal Coliform Test By Using Escherichia Coli As The Indicator Organism, James B. Hufham

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The fecal coliform membrane filter method (MFC) currently used in water pollution analysis was evaluated by using two strains of E. coli, a known fecal coliform, as th indicator organism. A large relative error in the results obtained with this method was found to be dependent upon the brand of membrane filter employed, the medium, and the temperature of incubation. MFC densities varied between 10 and 60% of the densities determined by means of total bacteria counts and total coliform counts performed at 35°C. Due to the large relative error encountered, the MFC method cannot be recommended as an analytical …

Bulletin No 3887 - Cattle Yard Construction, Western Australian Department Of Agriculture Jan 1974

Bulletin No 3887 - Cattle Yard Construction, Western Australian Department Of Agriculture

Bulletins - 3000 - 3999

Good cattle yards allow animals to be handled quietly, safely and efficiently. If yards are well designed, animal uneasiness is minimised and so, too, are frayed tempers.

This bulletin outlines general points of cattle yard design and construction. There are many and varied cattle yard designs in use—many good ones and some bad ones. This bulletin should help in avoiding the bad ones.

Structural Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Members Made Of Thick Sheets And Plates, Ai-Shen Liu Jan 1974

Structural Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Members Made Of Thick Sheets And Plates, Ai-Shen Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

"It is well-known that the current AlSI Specification for the design of cold-formed steel structural members has been developed mainly for thin steel sections. In order to extend the applicability of the specification for the design of cold-formed steel members thicker than 1/4 in., both analytical and experimental investigations have recently been conducted with special emphases on the effects of cold work on the mechanical properties of corners and the strength of bolted connections.

For the effects of cold work, previous investigations have shown that the phenomena of strain hardening and strain aging are main factors which affect the mechanical …

Porous Sand-Asphalt Mixtures, James H. Havens Jan 1974

Porous Sand-Asphalt Mixtures, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Size is relative. Densely graded sand-asphalts are relatively similar to conventional, bituminous concretes. Porous sand-asphalts possess the same attributes as other porous, bituminous mixtures. Surely, sand-asphalt mixtures, can be designed to be as porous as the so-called, open-graded plantmix seals. Particle shape and texture otherwise define skid-resistance. Stability remains an assurance against scaling. Stability is assured by maximum utilization of filler-bitumen ratio and the stiffness of asphalt cement.

Hydrologic Model Studies Of The Mt. Olympus Cove Area Of Salt Lake County, J. Paul Riley, Vernon J. Rogers, George B. Shih Jan 1974

Hydrologic Model Studies Of The Mt. Olympus Cove Area Of Salt Lake County, J. Paul Riley, Vernon J. Rogers, George B. Shih

Reports

Urban development on any natural drainage basin causes marked changes in the runoff characteristics of the basin. Urbanization alters natural drainage channels and reduces average infiltration rates. Thus, flood conditions are enhanced both within the urbanizing area itself and at downstream locations, where existing channels might not be able to cope with the increased rates of water flow. The Olympus Cove area in Salt Lake County is undergoing rapid urban development, and potential flood hazards within the area and at downstream locations are thereby increasing. Recognizing this situation, officials of the Sale Lake County took the initiative in organizing an …

Foreward: As a means of keeping water research programs at Utah State University responsive to needs in terms of both timeliness and emphasis, President Glen L. Taggart, in 1970, requested a number of Utah citizens to serve as a panel to give counsel and advice to the Utah Water Research Laboratory and Center for Water Resources Research. Membership of this 16-member panel represents a broad spectrum of water-related experience gained from a variety of professional backgrounds and organizational affiliations. The objective was to keep the panel small enough for it to be a "working" group but large enough to obtain …

Review Paper: Evaluation Of Techniques For Algae Removal From Wastewater Stabilization Ponds, E. Joe Middlebrooks, Donald B. Porcella, Robert A. Gearheart, Gary R. Marshall, James H. Reynolds, William J. Grenney Jan 1974

Review Paper: Evaluation Of Techniques For Algae Removal From Wastewater Stabilization Ponds, E. Joe Middlebrooks, Donald B. Porcella, Robert A. Gearheart, Gary R. Marshall, James H. Reynolds, William J. Grenney

Reports

Introduction: Approximately 90 percent of the wastewater lagoons in the United States are located in small communities of 5,000 people or less. These communities, many with an average daily wastewater flow of only 175,000 - 200,000 gallons, do not have the resources to keep man at the lagoon sites throughout the day (38). A high degree of technical knowhow is usually lacking in these communities. Often only periodic inspection or maintenance is carried out by the general municipal work force. Therefore, the development of a relatively inexpensive method that does not require sophisticated and constant operation or extensive maintenance is …
