Tightening of the European Union law in the field of the air emission limit values from waste incineration causes necessity for existing and new incineration plants to conform to the standards. It will often involve modernization of the flue gas cleaning system. Proposed in the paper the methodology of evaluation of the combustion gases composition in point of view cleaning difficulty should be useful to this end. Average toxicity factors for hazardous waste incineration flue gases were defined as well. Among other things they can be used in comparative analysis of the air pollutant concentration in the raw gas (before …

Application And Robust H??Control Of Pdc Fuzzy Controller For Nonlinear Systems With External Disturbance, Wei-Ling Chiang, Treng-Wu Chen, Ming-Yi Liu, Chun-Jung Hsu Dec 2001

Application And Robust H??Control Of Pdc Fuzzy Controller For Nonlinear Systems With External Disturbance, Wei-Ling Chiang, Treng-Wu Chen, Ming-Yi Liu, Chun-Jung Hsu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

In terms of Lyapunov's direct method, a stability criterion is derived to guarantee the stability of the system especially for the resonant and chaotic systems. The common P matrix of the criterion is obtained by using linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization algorithms to solve the robust fuzzy control problem. Based on the control scheme and this criterion, a fuzzy controller is then designed via the technique of parallel distributed compensation (PDC) to stabilize the nonlinear system. Finally, the proposed controller design method is demonstrated through numerical simulations on the chaotic and resonant systems.

Multiple Objective And Span Evaluation Method For Damage Grade Of Existing Reinforced Concrete Bridges, Ming-Te Liang, Heng-Dong Wang, Jai-He Wu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The principal purpose of this paper was to investigate the evaluation method of performance for existing reinforced concrete bridges. The least squares technique in classical mathematics was adopted firmly to establish both the multiple objective weight distribution method and multiple span level weight method. Thus, the multiple objective and span evaluation method were built for estimating the performance of existing reinforced concrete bridges. The evaluation model may be divided into grades I, II, III and IV which are described as non-damage, light damage, severe damage and unfit for service, respectively. Using the proposed model, the Huey-tong bridge, Jzyhchyang bridge, Ay-gow …

The Effects Of Particle Shape On Bond Strength Improvement Of Epoxy-Particle Coating Composites, Jiang-Jhy Chang, Wei-Chung Yeih Dec 2001

The Effects Of Particle Shape On Bond Strength Improvement Of Epoxy-Particle Coating Composites, Jiang-Jhy Chang, Wei-Chung Yeih

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

In this paper the effect of particle shape on the bond improvement of epoxy-particle coating composite is evaluated. In our previous studies, it has been shown that adding foreign particles in the epoxy may enhance the bond characteristics of coating. It has been found that the enhancement of bond for coating by adding foreign particles in epoxy may come from two reasons: one comes from the mechanical improvement by foreign particles and the other comes from the chemical reaction of foreign particles which yields a better binding material. In our previous study, the size of foreign particle influenced the degree …

Faraday Resonance For Stratified Two-Layer Flow, Wu-Ting Tsai Dec 2001

Faraday Resonance For Stratified Two-Layer Flow, Wu-Ting Tsai

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The analysis developed in Tsai [1] is extended to consider the parametrically resonant motion of a stratified two-layer fluid in a twodimensional rectangular basin forced to oscillate vertically. The modulation equation governing the slowly-varying amplitude of the interface is derived using method of multiple scales. For steady harmonic response, the present result compares well with available experimental measurements for the low frequency region. The discrepancy increases, however, for high-frequency response.

Statistics Of Sdf-System Estimate Of Roof Displacement For Pushover Analysis Of Buildings, Anil K. Chopra, Rakesh K. Goel, Chatpan Chintanapakdee Dec 2001

Statistics Of Sdf-System Estimate Of Roof Displacement For Pushover Analysis Of Buildings, Anil K. Chopra, Rakesh K. Goel, Chatpan Chintanapakdee

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Investigated in this report is the basic premise that the roof displacement of a multistory building can be determined from the deformation of an SDF system. For this purpose, the response of both systems is determined rigorously by nonlinear response history analysis, without introducing any of the approximations underlying the simplified methods for estimating the deformation of an SDF system (see, e.g., FEMA-273 or ATC-40 guidelines). The statistics of the SDF-system estimate of roof displacement are presented for a variety of building frames and six SAC buildings subjected to ground motion ensembles.

Two sets of structural systems and ground motions …

Determination Of Thickness Of Smooth Geomembranes, Nazli Yesiller, Arif Cekic Dec 2001

Determination Of Thickness Of Smooth Geomembranes, Nazli Yesiller, Arif Cekic

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Tests were conducted to determine thickness of smooth, nonreinforced geomembranes using three methods: mechanical (according to ASTM and European standards), ultrasonic, and magnetic methods. The mechanical method is the standard procedure used for determining thickness of geomembranes. The ultrasonic and magnetic methods are not commonly used for geomembranes; however, they are used for testing other materials such as metals. Tests were conducted on 15 geomembranes representing five types of polymers (HDPE, LLDPE, PVC, PP, and EPDM). The results of the testing program indicated that the level of pressures applied affected the thickness measurements in mechanical tests. While the low pressures …

Development Of A Model For Predicting The Vertical Profile Of Ozone Based On Ground-Level Ozone Observations And Cloud Cover, Gi-Dong Kim Dec 2001

Development Of A Model For Predicting The Vertical Profile Of Ozone Based On Ground-Level Ozone Observations And Cloud Cover, Gi-Dong Kim

Doctoral Dissertations

Ozone formed in a chemical reaction is vertically dispersed and mixed with the ozone mass aloft by turbulent convection due to solar radiation. The mixing height, which depends on the stability of the atmosphere, varies by day/night time and by season of year and is characteristic of season and day and night time from year to year. Ground level ozone is generally the combined result of dynamics of the atmosphere resulted from the turbulent convection in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), production and destruction processes such as transport from upper air mass, subsequent transport to the ground, photochemical production and …

Improving Incident Management Response And Coordination Of Resources, Jennifer R. Walton, Monica L. Barrett, Jerry G. Pigman Dec 2001

Improving Incident Management Response And Coordination Of Resources, Jennifer R. Walton, Monica L. Barrett, Jerry G. Pigman

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Highway crashes cause a major impact to the transportation network by critically limiting the operational efficiency of the roadway. Traveler delay is the problem most often associated with highway crashes, but by far the most serious problem is the resulting secondary crashes that occur. Another related issue is the danger posed to response personnel serving the public at the scene. The magnitude of these problems is severe. A coordinated plan for managing the scene is needed to reduce the impact of highway crashes and improve the safety for everyone.

A Checklist and interagency workshop has been developed to address ways …

Evaluation Of Automated Bridge Deck Anti-Icing System, Monica L. Barrett, Jerry G. Pigman Dec 2001

Evaluation Of Automated Bridge Deck Anti-Icing System, Monica L. Barrett, Jerry G. Pigman

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Driving in snow and ice can be dangerous. This is especially true on bridges. Under certain cold weather conditions, moisture on bridge decks freeze because of the open air flow under them while the adjacent roadway is unaffected. This creates potentially hazardous driving situations for motorists who may not be expecting a change of condition from the road to the bridge surface.

To combat this problem, a bridge deck anti-icing system was installed on a bridge on southbound Interstate 75 at the north interchange to Corbin, Kentucky in October 1997. This system can be actuated early before ice and snow …

The Effects Of Dissolved Oxygen Concentration And Biological Solids Retention Time On Activated Sludge Treatment Performance, Jack Joseph Parker Dec 2001

The Effects Of Dissolved Oxygen Concentration And Biological Solids Retention Time On Activated Sludge Treatment Performance, Jack Joseph Parker

Masters Theses

A bench scale treatment system with dissolved oxygen (DO) control was used to determine the effects of DO concentration and biological solids retention time (BSRT) on treatment performance using the activated sludge process. The four reactors, operating at BSRTs of 20, 10, 5, and 2 days, were fed settled municipal wastewater collected from the Kuwahee wastewater treatment plant in Knoxville, TN. The DO was maintained at different set points in each reactor ranging from 4.0 to 0.2 mg/L.

Experimental results indicate that carbon treatment performance improved, on average, with increasing BSRT but DO had little effect on carbon oxidation. Sludge …

The clinker burning plant is ideally suited for processing a wide variety of hazardous waste materials. High temperatures existing in cement kilns (ca. 1350-1450 Centigrades in the burning zone) as well as long gas-residence time (ca. 6-10 s) provide potentially excellent conditions for destruction of toxic organic compounds. Non-volatile compounds are retained in the solid phase and built into the clinker. A lot of other (for example acid gases) can also be absorbed by alkaline solid phase. Old pesticide wastes present a big problem in Poland now. They can be use as waste-derived fuels in cement kilns, especially in the …
