Evaluating Water Reuse Alternatives In Water Resources Planning, A. Bruce Bishop, William J. Grenney, Rengasan Narayanan, Stanley L. Klemetson Jan 1974

Evaluating Water Reuse Alternatives In Water Resources Planning, A. Bruce Bishop, William J. Grenney, Rengasan Narayanan, Stanley L. Klemetson

Reports

Water reuse is a recognized option for augmenting water supplies to provide for expanded water needs. A methodology is developed for examining optimal strategies for water reuse within the context of the total water resources system, including both the provision of water supplies for various uses and management of wastewaters. A model of the water resources system is formulated as a “transportation “ or “transshipment” problem in linear programming depicting the possible sources of supply, including effluent sources available for reuse, which can be used to satisfy the requirements of various water users. The optimizing objective in the model is …

Reports

Introduction and Overview: This is an interim report on Phase II of the three phase study. The objectives covered in this phase were: 1. To gather social and hydrologic data needed to calibrate and test the model. 2. The expand the physical model to include the rural part of the watersheds. 3. To test and improve techniques of the logical linking of the hydrologic and sociologic systems. 4. To begin adapting the model to the computer. During the second phase for the hydrologic component of the model major emphasis was placed on the expansion of the hydrologic area and the …

Effect Of Temperature On Algal Removal By Alum Coagulation, Muhammad Anis H. Al-Layla, E. Joe Middlebrooks, Donald B. Porcella Jan 1974

Effect Of Temperature On Algal Removal By Alum Coagulation, Muhammad Anis H. Al-Layla, E. Joe Middlebrooks, Donald B. Porcella

Reports

Questions about the effect of temperature on algal cell coagulation and the relationships between algae removal and temperature, alum dosage, paddle speed, flocculation time, and settling time are answered. The investigations consisted of two series of tests: Studies on algae cultured under laboratory control, and algae in wastewater stabilization ponds. The jar-test technique was used for the coagulation of algal suspensions by alum. Coagulation of algae is caused mainly by the insoluble flocs of aluminum hydroxide. Other aluminum species also have coagulative properties but are far less effective. The destabilization of algal colloids results from enmeshment within the hydroxide precipitates, …

Recommendations For Implementation Of Uniform Project Identification From The Upi Task Force, Herbert F. Southgate Jan 1974

Recommendations For Implementation Of Uniform Project Identification From The Upi Task Force, Herbert F. Southgate

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

For years project identifications have been based upon county, section, subsection, and phase of work. While this system worked well in the beginning, overlay constructions, widening efforts, etc. have caused overlapping of projects to the point that identification of a given portion of a highway has become very difficult. Furthermore, each of the many separate phases of work has its own project number and may not be so readily identifiable as the succeeding work phase.

Management came to realize there was a need for a numbering identification system that would be readily understandable. The direct result was the development of …

Characterization And Pollutional Contribution Of Stormwater Runoff From A Small Urban Area., John Lamb Wendleton Jan 1974

Characterization And Pollutional Contribution Of Stormwater Runoff From A Small Urban Area., John Lamb Wendleton

Masters Theses

"Stormwater runoff from urban areas has long been recognized as a pollutional source, however, only in the last decade has there been an extensive eff ort to measure its effect on receiving lakes and streams. Because runoff from small urban communities has received limited attention, this investigation was undertaken to determine the quality and pollutional contribution of stormwater runoff from a small urban area. The specific objectives of the study were: to characterize and correlate runoff quality with land use activity and to qualitatively and quantitatively measure the pollutants discharged with respect to time.

Runoff from 3 test watersheds in …

A Multiple-Plan Evaluation Model For Small Ungauged Watersheds, James R. Dexter Jan 1974

A Multiple-Plan Evaluation Model For Small Ungauged Watersheds, James R. Dexter

Masters Theses

A computer solution model is proposed for simulation of the effect of alternative measures for flood damage reduction. The goal of the model is to optimize the value of an objective function which will maximize the amount of net benefits returned by the project. The evaluation includes unit hydrograph synthesis, direct runoff construction, computation of average annual damages, and optimization of an objective function. A test application of the model is made on a small community affected by floods from a small ungauged stream"--Abstract, page iii.

Evaluative Study Of A Proposed Municipal Pyrolysis Installation, Leon Breckenridge

All Master's Theses

This paper discusses an alternative to sanitary landfills as a method of disposing of municipal solid waste. The alternative means is a pyrolysis-gasification process for the disposal of solid wastes and the production of energy in the form of a gas of relatively low energy content.

Characteristics of typical municipal solid wastes are discussed. A discussion of the pyrolysis process is included along with other pertinent technical information. A method for utilization of the energy produced from pyrolysis is presented.

Relative Performance Of Two Activated Carbons In Treating Pharmaceutical Waste., K. A. Narasimhan Jan 1974

Relative Performance Of Two Activated Carbons In Treating Pharmaceutical Waste., K. A. Narasimhan

Masters Theses

"This work examined the feasibility of the carbon adsorption system to treat a high organic strength waste (having a COD of 8,100 mg/£) from a pharmaceutical plant, and also compared the relative treatment efficiencies of two different kinds of carbon~ Calgon Filtrasorb 400 and Darco S-51, both having the same size ranges.

The overall treatment scheme employed consisted of chemical clarification and activated carbon adsorption. Jar tests were conducted to select a proper type of coagulant and determine an optimum dosage. Batch and column adsorption studies were conducted using both carbons.

Alum was found to be a better coagulant than …

Local Buckling Of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members Having Initially Curved Compression Elements, William M. Mckinney Jan 1974

Local Buckling Of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members Having Initially Curved Compression Elements, William M. Mckinney

Masters Theses

"A comprehensive investigation of the effect of initial deviation from flatness on buckling stress and post-buckling strength of compression elements in structural plate members is presented. The study of stiffened and unstiffened elements expands the scope of elastic stability for initially curved plates. Finite element techniques were utilized for the study of unstiffened elements"--Abstract, page ii.

A Planning Study On The Electrical Load Requirement For The New Town Of Pattonsburg, Javad Yousefian Jan 1974

A Planning Study On The Electrical Load Requirement For The New Town Of Pattonsburg, Javad Yousefian

Masters Theses

"Because of an Army Corps of Engineer proposed new dam on the Grand River 1 the original town of Pattonsburg, Missouri was to be inundated by the resulting lake reservoir formed above the dam. The city planners proposed the relocation of the town site adjacent to the new lake, forming a lake side community attractive to both a residential population and for industrial locations.

The electrical power loads of New Pattonsburg's residential, industrial, commercial, and municipal areas, as well as its street lighting power requirements, were planned for a population of 50,000. Statistical analysis of demographic surveys was employed to …

The study was conducted within a 3 x 3-mile grid around the smelter employing twenty dustfall stations and five HiVolurne samplers. The samples collected were analyzed for lead, zinc, copper and …

Laboratory Evaluation Of Dynamic Soil Properties By Ultrasonic Testing Methods, Ronald Maurice Eckelkamp Jan 1974

Laboratory Evaluation Of Dynamic Soil Properties By Ultrasonic Testing Methods, Ronald Maurice Eckelkamp

Masters Theses

"Measurement of ultrasonic compression and shear wave velocities through a soil material has been made with a pulse wave generator developed at the University of Missouri-Rolla. The variation of these velocities along with the behavior of the dynamic material parameters of the material (Young's modulus, shear modulus, Poisson's ratio) with void ratio and degree of saturation were determined. Compression wave velocity, shear wave velocity, Young's modulus and shear modulus were found to decrease with increasing void ratio; degree of saturation was of little influence. Wave attenuation could not be measured by the test procedure used"--Abstract, page ii.
