Current literature fails to assess the race-based bias of some white teachers and its impact on the school-to-prison pipeline. The actions of some white teachers due to unconscious or conscious race-based bias can increase race-based stress experienced by Blacks students and lead to racial trauma. While teaching math for social justice and equity has become a heavily researched topic in recent decades with Jo Boaler (2008, 2015, 2016), Rochelle Gutiérrez (2009, 2013), and Eric (Rico) Gutstein (2003, 2006, 2007, 2013) emerging as recent leaders in the charge, the focus has consistently remained on traditional classroom teaching (e.g. Boaler, 2008; Gutiérrez, 2009; Gutstein, 2003). This convergent design mixed methods study investigated the impact of teaching math for social justice in the online learning environment, specifically, the impact of discussion forums on students’ social justice beliefs in fully online undergraduate math courses.

Collaborative learning has been shown to improve student learning and performance; however, the influence of collaboration has not yet been examined in the context of an online introductory statistics course. Often the influence of collaborative learning is measured using only one outcome variable, typically course achievement. This study will contribute a more thorough examination of the influence collaboration has on student learning by operationalizing the learning construct with the use of multiple measures: academic performance, perceived learning, and growth in statistical knowledge. In addition, this study will provide a model for incorporating collaborative learning in an asynchronous online course.

I present a study of eight graduate assistants who teach introductory composition courses as part of their graduate assistantships. Each participant was asked to freewrite for ten minutes a day, five days a week, for ten weeks. Participants were interviewed about their teacher and writer identities prior to the freewriting, at week five, and at week ten. Graduate assistants offer a unique perspective, as many of them are neither professional writers nor trained teachers, yet they are hired to teach writing. Using Peter Elbow’s Embracing Contraries (1986) as a theoretical framework, I determine that freewriting offered the participants a space …

Through the national consortium, SUMMIT-P, Ferris State University faculty collaborated to develop and scaffold mathematics and quantitative reasoning across disciplines to reduce math anxiety. Participants in this collaborative group included faculty from social work, nursing, and mathematics who developed a case study on a Hurricane Katrina scenario that necessitated calculating the need for emergency shelter, water, food, and medicine, and as a response to the potential for a Malaria outbreak. Student learning across STEM disciplines has been shown to increase with greater integration of applications in mathematics courses. One challenge of this effort is that identical constructs are often presented differently in the partner disciplines than in the mathematics courses. This paper explores the introduction of the new Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA) for graduate teachers in Australia. We investigate how the broader discussion around TPAs has been understood by multiple agents during an eight-month period from January 2019 to August 2019. Data includes legacy media, social media tweets and a survey of school leaders. The analysis draws on Bernsteinian (1975) theory about the way particular social relations produce differing sentiments of social unity. How do we hold our students accountable? As teachers, that is a question we face every day. This article describes several ways to help students become more accountable. A student-led parent-teacher conference puts the student in the spotlight and allows them to speak on their own education with family. “Classroom Court” allows for students to help decide if their classmates are following a rule established by the class. Lastly, project-based learning with student choice allows students the opportunity to stretch their imagination and be more creative with their learning.

According to a January 11, 2021, SC Education Oversight Committee news release, Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) testing data from approximately 220,000 South Carolina students showed a projected decrease in the percentage of students meeting grade level expectations. The news release defines this as the “COVID Slide” (SCEOC, 2021). The purpose of this review is to see if those projections were accurate by conducting a state-wide review of middle school performance on the South Carolina College-and Career-Ready Assessments (SC READY). Comparisons are made by subject, grade level, gender, ethnicity, and poverty status from 2019 to 2021.

If students do not perceive themselves as capable, they will likely decline opportunities that threaten their self-beliefs. This requires educators to create redefining moments for students to experience struggle in a safe environment that ultimately encourages students to remove personal limitations. When teachers are critical about ways to respond to negative, limiting self-concepts, students may conquer breakthroughs in learning. In this article, I suggest that a change in self-concept represents a change in mindset, producing significant learning outcomes. To accomplish this, I will discuss self- concept, self-efficacy, and implications on teaching, using the CARE theory of self-concept development.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, our middle level students and teachers have suffered both great stress and loss. This loss and stress can result in the acting out behavior of students whose emotional maturity may not be fully able to cope. One middle school cancelled in-person classes in an attempt to ameliorate behavior issues. This article will examine the causes of the anti-social behavior and offer suggestions on the social-emotional health of both students and teachers. Strategies and resources will be listed in an effort to provide support to educators.

Middle school students are weird and wonderful. Why not bring some of that weirdness and wonder into the mathematics classroom? Effective teachers of mathematics can create a culture of engagement, curiosity, and collaboration in mathematics instruction by presenting “weird” problems (as opposed to word problems) and giving students opportunities to explore their wonderings. Inspired by “the bizarreness effect,” the problems presented here are infused with humor and designed to intrigue young adolescents.

This article describes how participating in a computing program positively impacted young adolescents from underrepresented populations in STEM attitude toward STEM and interest in STEM- related careers. Nineteen sixth-grade students attending a rural, Title I middle school participated in the study. Five computing lessons were taught by undergraduate interns majoring in computer science, middle-level mathematics and science teacher education, and secondary mathematics teacher education. Analysis of quantitative and qualitative data provide convincing evidence that students’attitudes toward STEM improved and interests in STEM-related careers increased because of participating in the computing program.

We advocate building an extensive adolescent literature library to offer our pre-service teachers access to diverse texts, more text choices, and more opportunities for self-selected reading. In addition, we suggest using a faculty and student book club to model reading, write about literature, and discuss adolescent literature across disciplines.
