The Impacts Of Youth Conservation Corps On Participants: A Multi-Method Examination 2015, Nicholas Justin Prechel

The purpose of this study was to examine the benefits that participants receive from serving in youth conservation corps. The entire population of one youth conservation corps was selected to participate in the study during the summer of 2012 trail work season. The study utilized a mixed-method approach that included a one-time pre/posttest with a retrospective pretest adapted from the American Camp Association’s Youth Outcomes Battery (YOB) and an open ended interview session. Of the 109 participants in the field at the time, 101 chose to participate in the quantitative survey. The YOB tested four areas: independence, responsibility, teamwork, and …

A provocative essay awaits those who peruse prize-winning author J.B. MacKinnon's article, False Idyll. MacKinnon posits that many of us romanticize nature as a sacred place ( one of succor and comfort) overlooking that most places visited have been tamed by humans. The absence of real wildness (predators that can kill us) creates an "imaginary connection with nature" instead of a tangible one. We settle for occasional visits to such sanctuaries and "see little purpose in returning to a deeper and more risky engagement:' Thus "seeing only nurture in nature" reinforces the concept that we are apart and above it.

While Native Americans advocated balance and respect for their wilderness surroundings, European immigrants felt fear and repulsion toward it. Through this qualitative study, I want to add to the theoretical conversation about garden and farm education in schools and offer a starting point for a conversation surrounding care and gardening/farming in schools. The purpose of this study is to understand how teachers and students demonstrate care while implementing a garden and farm curriculum. Data collection included 15 participant interviews from students, staff, administrators, and school officials from a large public school district implementing garden and farm education lessons and observations of educators, farmers, and farm interns interacting with and instructing students in a weeklong Farm Camp environment. In February 2007 a new senior secondary Physical Education Studies (PES) was introduced in Western Australia (WA). The course was one of approximately 50 new courses that were developed in conjunction with the introduction of new Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). Notably, the rationale for PES claims that the “integration of theory and practice is central to studies in this course” (Curriculum Council of WA, 2009, Physical Education Course Syllabus, p. 2). This quantitative study of a university outdoor education (OE) course as a significant life experience (SLE) builds upon previous qualitative research (Wigglesworth & Heintzman, 2013, in press). The study was retrospective in nature, and its theoretical framework emerged from SLE research in which participants are asked to recall experiences that have contributed to future decisions about environmental protection (Chawla, 1998).
