For many of us using group-building activities, the solution to maintaining the integrity of participants lies in supporting their decisions as individuals. "Challenge by Choice" is commonly used in programs that combine individual risk-taking with group-building activities such as rock climbing. The challenge by choice philosophy states that if a participant feels threatened or unsafe with a situation, they reserve the right to step out. However, in order for challenge by choice to be effective, it must be used in conjunction with an environment that suppons an individual's ability to make their own decisions. Healing Power Of Nature In Recovery, Cherie Carter

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

During In-patient Rehabilitation, a 30-60 day program, clients are provided with many outdoor experiences through activities in the Therapeutic Recreation (TR) program. Trips to local parks and beaches, ropes courses, canoe and camping trips, and organized activity days planned in local parks all contribute opportunities for clients to develop a connection with nature. Client comments about outdoor experiences during and following treatment at Main Quest include positive remarks about stimulating senses that have been deadened through the use of drugs, rediscovering feelings of wonder, finding a balance that has been missing for a number of years or was never developed, …

A childlike feeling of kinship with trees occurs again and again in the literature of spirituality. Sherry Ruch Anderson and Patricia Hopkins noted chis connection often during the five years of interviews and research they did for their book The feminine face of God (Anderson and Hopkins, 1991).

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) has re~ r d .. . , at deal of press in recent months, much of it n~gativ'--· following legislation proposed by Rep'.,~()•1ti~h, Alaksa) in September, 1995. His legislation essentially renders the ESA useless, by overruling definition of "taking," requiring federal agencies to pay off aggrevied landowners, and making protection on private lands voluntary. The earlier momentum of the bill has slowed considerably, as Republican leaders, including House Speaker Newt Gingrich, realize that the American public does not want to see hundreds of endangered species disappear forever.

Recent studies conducted by the Environmental Careers Organization and SCA reveal that the supply and demand for women and people of color in the environmental field is critically unbalanced, and that America's environmental organizations are "ill-prepared" to recruit and retain talented people of color.

This lack of representation by women and minorities - who comprise a growing proportion of our nation's available labor force - inhibits not only the diversity and growth of the conservation workforce, but also its credibility and effectiveness.
