Performative Possibilities In The Development Of Protagonistic Agency Among Graduate Students In China, Yan Wang
Education (PhD) Dissertations
Educational drama is a term that has in recent years achieved a pride of place in the field of arts-based research. During previous centuries, however, drama was considered anathema to formal learning and theaters themselves were considered “sinks of uncleanliness” (Coggin, 1956, p. 38). Only in recent history has educational drama been considered a legitimate means of teaching and learning. While Dorothy Heathcote, Gavin Bolton, Richard Courtney and others have helped to legitimize the fecund role that drama plays in learning, there has, to date, been a dearth of studies utilizing interdisciplinary approaches such as playbuilding (a participatory arts-based research …

The Early Grade Reading Assessment: Assessing Children’S Acquisition Of Basic Literacy Skills In Developing Countries, Australian Council For Educational Research
Assessment GEMS
The Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA), administered individually in about 15 minutes, measures the most basic foundation skills for literacy acquisition in the early grades. The assessment was developed by the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) through funding provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the World Bank, in addition to resources provided by RTI. In the context of this emerging focus on measuring basic literacy skills, EGRA was developed to provide a battery of assessments of basic reading skills for developing countries to monitor the status of early reading in primary schools. The assessment tool was …

International Early Learning And Child Well-Being Study, Australian Council For Educational Research
Assessment GEMS
The International Early Learning and Child Well-Being Study (IELS) assesses children at age 5, measuring key learning and development outcomes. The overall purpose of IELS is to help countries to better support the development and overall well-being of young children through improved early learning experiences. It achieves this by: providing robust empirical data on children’s early learning; identifying factors that enable and inhibit children’s early learning; and informing early childhood education centres and schools about skill levels of five year old children, as well as related contextual factors, which could be used to make more informed decisions about curriculums and …

Markers of pointed challenges to global understanding, relationship building across national boundaries, and development of resilient intercultural competencies abound. Each day, we are confronted with news of geopolitical conflict and violence, news of resurgent ethnocentric nationalisms, news of fear about cross-cultural contact and engagement, and signs of entrenched, willful ignorance about so many of the rich traditions, values, languages, and frameworks of meaning-making that shape the experience of the human family across the globe. As profoundly disturbing as these and related challenges are, it is vitally important for our educational and scholarly work as students, faculty, and staff that we …

Proceedings: 2020 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus
It is my great honor and pleasure to call Dr. Julius Amin both a friend and colleague, and to introduce him to you this evening. I’m thrilled we have the opportunity to hear from Dr. Amin this evening about a critical global issue. I had the good fortune to travel with Julius to Cameroon about five years ago, and I learned so much from him. We appreciate his willingness to share his expertise and personal experiences about the current conflict and anglophone crisis in Cameroon.

A Dayton, Ohio, Community Casts Two Challenging Questions: Why Does Africa Matter? Why Care About Cameroon’S Anglophone Crisis?, Julius A. Amin
Proceedings: 2020 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus
Certainly, this topic sounds important, even if it also sounds a bit overwhelming. That word global can seem intimidating, particularly when even the local challenges us. But this evening I hope to narrow the globe down and speak about Africa, and about the ongoing Anglophone Conflict in Cameroon. My hope is to show how and why the African Continent and Cameroon matter to us in this room and beyond.

Catholic Schools, Accompaniment And Subsidiarity: Some Teacher Observations From A Small, Regional School System, Richard M. Rymarz
eJournal of Catholic Education in Australasia
This research uses subsidiarity, a key principle of Catholic social teaching, to better understand teachers in a small, regional Australian diocese. Nine teachers with at least three years’ experience working in Catholic schools in the diocese were interviewed. The interviews focussed on three research questions: How do teachers come to work in this Catholic school system? What is their experience of working in Catholic schools? How do they feel supported in Catholic schools especially in regard to teaching religious education and identifying with the ethos of the school? Results indicated that the life journeys of teachers that brought them to …

The Global Education Seminar (GES) program is in its ninth year of existence. The program serves as a key faculty development opportunity and supports respective academic units’ strategic priorities for internationalization. Faculty from across disciplines commit to participating in a one-year, seminar-structured program prior to a three-week immersive experience in a particular region. The intent is to provide faculty with a mechanism to expand their understanding of the world and, in doing so, shape new or existing curriculum, faculty or student collaborations, research opportunities, and/or other international opportunities. Regions of focus for the GES program have included China, Argentina, Peru, …
The Urgency Of Global Awareness, Julius A. Amin
The Urgency Of Global Awareness, Julius A. Amin
Proceedings: 2020 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus
The 2020 Global Voices Symposium occurred at a momentous time in the world. During the Symposium there was chatter about the looming threat of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), which already had ravaged communities in China. Few predicted its rapid spread. Less than a week after the Symposium, many governors and local leaders in the U.S. ordered K-12 schools and universities to close as a preliminary measure to curb the spread of the virus. Three weeks after the Symposium, eight states in the U.S. issued shelter-in-place orders for their citizens, and other states were contemplating similar action. Repeatedly, people were being told …

Very little comprehensive research has been done thus far examining the effects of academic discipline on study abroad outcomes. This study investigated potential differences between global awareness scores across different academic disciplines for students that participated in study abroad during their undergraduate academic programs. Five hundred and eight-five current and past university students took a short survey modified from a Chieffo & Griffiths 2004 study. Overall global awareness scores, as well as scores for four sub-characteristics: intercultural awareness, personal growth & development, awareness of global interdependence, and functional knowledge of world geography & languages – were compared across student majors …

Teaching Perspectives Of Faculty Members At Arab Universities: Andragogy And Islamic Humanism, Layla Goushey
Dissertations
Cultural differences exist between Western perspectives on humanistic teaching methods and methods developed during the past 100 years in the Arab region based on English and French colonialist systems. Political structures and economic challenges in the region uphold the rigid societal and security structures that limit faculty governance and academic freedom, which impacts teaching and learning perspectives. This study utilized basic qualitative design methods based in constructivist grounded theory. Questionnaires, surveys, and email interviews that invited open-ended, explanatory, and descriptive answers were central to this work. Taking an observer’s approach to this study, I analyzed survey responses of Arab university …

For the third time in three decades world leaders reaffirmed their promise of "Education For All" when adopting Sustainable Development Goal 4 in 2015. It is the most far-reaching commitment to quality and equity in education so far, yet, there is no consensus on what the agenda means in practice. With a decade left until the 2030 deadline, Grading Goal Four calls upon the education community to engage more thoughtfully and critically with SDG 4 and related efforts. As an ever-growing number of actors and initiatives claim to contribute to its achievement, it is becoming clear that the ambitious but …

Re-Imagining The Collegiate Ideal: An Exploration Of The Higher Education Motivations And Self-Formation Of Students From International Schools, Natalie Cruz, Chris R. Glass
College of Education & Professional Studies (Darden) Posters
There has been a substantial growth in global student mobility in the last twenty years, with almost five million students choosing to study outside their home country for tertiary education. Likewise, P12 international schools have experienced tremendous growth, with over five million students enrolled worldwide. Students from international schools often find themselves at a crossroads when choosing a university. To unpack the college choice process and understand how students viewed their transnational identities as important factors in their self-formation, researchers interviewed 19 graduating students from international schools and countries across the world. This longitudinal phenomenological study used self-formation (Marginson, 2018) …

Overcoming Communicative And Cultural Barriers: A Study Of The Perceptions And Interactions Between American And International Students, Hope V. Twitchell
Selected Honors Theses
Globalization is a central aspect to the developing American society, both vocationally and culturally. Increased international representation on college campuses is one example of the prevalence of globalization in an everyday context. As the rate of international students present on American university campuses increases, more research has been focusing on the experiences of international students. The present study focused on adding to the literature surrounding American students’ perceptions and interactions with international students when communicative and cultural barriers arise. The thesis statement proposed that American students attending an American university who had previous international travel experience would be more adept …

Structural-Semantic Analysis Of Polynomial Verbal Copulative Phraseologies In Persian Language, Nuriddinov Nodir Mr
Structural-Semantic Analysis Of Polynomial Verbal Copulative Phraseologies In Persian Language, Nuriddinov Nodir Mr
The Light of Islam
Copulative phraseological units (CPU) occupy a special place in the Persian phraseological fund. These include fixed phrases which built on the model name+and+name, name+and+adjective, belonging to the same grammatical row. In these phrases, the linking conjunction واو عطف vāv-e a’tf is used as a connecting element. The linking conjunction واو عطف vāv-e a’tf is always pronounced “о” "in both fixed and free phrases. In CPUs, the main function of واو عطف vāv-e a’tf - to combine words with the same syntactic relation - loses its strength, and this conjunction turns into one of the main components of the …

Leading For Social Justice: A Call To Action To Improve Society., Teresa L. G. Warner
Journal of Organizational & Educational Leadership
School leaders are required to prepare students for a globally competitive society, and act ethically to facilitate a shared vision of school practices that serve all students equitably. Social justice leadership provided in school and teacher leadership preparation programs is a way to meet the standards for school executives and teachers. The decision to lead for social justice can be made as a result of district mandates while some leaders are motivated by personal experiences. Leaders are distracted from the importance of leading for social justice due to the pressures of accountability testing and the political outcry of the day. …

The Importance Of Cognitive Domains And The Returns To Schooling In South Africa: Evidence From Two Labor Surveys, Plamen Nikolov, Nusrat Jimi
Economics Faculty Scholarship
Numerous studies have considered the important role of cognition in estimating the returns to schooling. How cognitive abilities affect schooling may have important policy implications, especially in developing countries during periods of increasing educational attainment. Using two longitudinal labor surveys that collect direct proxy measures of cognitive skills, we study the importance of specific cognitive domains for the returns to schooling in two samples. We instrument for schooling levels and we find that each additional year of schooling leads to an increase in earnings by approximately 18-20 percent. The estimated effect sizes—based on the two-stage least squares estimates—are above the …
