The Quest To Increase Diversity At The University Of Oxford, Jeffery L. Wilson Feb 2022

The Quest To Increase Diversity At The University Of Oxford, Jeffery L. Wilson

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

In this paper, an understanding of how an elite institution pursues diversity initiatives is explored. Research afforded a better understanding of strategies adopted for recruitment and retention whereby positive results were reported after implementation. Removing barriers that may prevent marginalized populations from enrolling were critical towards these efforts. Oxford has taken steps to increase diversity, and it appears they are having modest success. One method that has been an asset is to invite students to spend time on campus through residential programs. Additional efforts underway to increase diversity include an intensive urban recruitment initiative and securing school/parent/community buy-in. Venturing into …

Studying Abroad At ‘Home’: Going To Japan In New Zealand, Douglas J. Rapley, Gillian Skyrme Feb 2022

Studying Abroad At ‘Home’: Going To Japan In New Zealand, Douglas J. Rapley, Gillian Skyrme

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

This article examines the experiences of a group of Japanese study abroad students in response to the purposeful replication of a Japanese environment by the New Zealand-based institution where they studied. Data were collected from 12 students via interviews spread over approximately 20 months, and revealed that management provided specifically for the Japanese students, isolating them from other groups within the college in different ways, which is contrary to frequently cited study abroad objectives. Some initial resistance by participants gave way to acceptance, demonstrated through personal activities which propagated the institution’s Japaneseness and an appreciation of management’s efforts to provide …

Within And Between School Variation In Achievement On The Programme For International Student Assessment (Pisa) In Australia: Pisa Australia Technical Paper, John Ainley, Greg Macaskill, Sue Thomson

OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) Australia

Australian secondary school students vary widely in their academic achievement. Using the scores from the Programme for International Student Achievement (PISA) in 2018, for example, the range from the 5th to the 95th percentile of student reading scores in Australia was 359 points compared to the OECD average of 327 points (OECD, 2019a; Thomson et al., 2019). This considerable range in achievement scores has been described as reflecting a long tail in the distribution of achievement. In this paper, attention is focused on the variation in the achievement scores of 15-year-old students in Australia based on data from PISA 2018. …

From 2000 To 2018: Examining The Relationship Between Net Tuition Revenue And The International Undergraduate Student Enrollment At Public Doctoral Universities, Zongxiang Mei, Yan Liu

Journal of Comparative & International Higher Education

Increased international students could potentially contribute to the institutional financial stability. However, there is limited research evidence regarding the association between net tuition revenue and international undergraduate student enrollment at public doctoral universities through a longitudinal perspective. This research, therefore, fills the gap and investigates the association between international student enrollment and the financial status of institutions. Informed by Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA), this study used correlational analysis, One-way ANOVA and Post Hoc tests to examine the relationship from different perspectives. These findings indicated a statistically significant positive correlation between net tuition revenue and international undergraduate student enrollment numbers at public …

First-Year Experience Course Impact On Undergraduate International Student Retention And Graduation, Dylan Rust, Raghvendra Singh

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

As institutions look to improve student retention through first-year experience (FYE) courses, some have implemented courses targeted specifically to the international population. A quantitative comparison of international students who took an FYE course with international students who did not take an FYE course was completed to analyze the differences in retention and graduation rates between the two groups. International freshmen who participated in the FYE course were retained and graduated at significantly higher rates than international freshmen who did not take the course. Aspects of the course that likely led to student retention and graduation are discussed.

International Baccalaureate: Meanings, Uses And Tensions In A Globalizing World, Paul Tarc Jan 2022

International Baccalaureate: Meanings, Uses And Tensions In A Globalizing World, Paul Tarc

Education Publications

Based on mission and programmatic steering, International Baccalaureate (IB) seeks to ‘create a better world’ via progressive educational curricula aimed at fostering ‘international mindedness.’ Across its fifty-plus year history, IB’s enduring progressive visions confront the pragmatic demands of viability and sustainability. Evident is the ‘malleability’ of IB, which allows for the distinctive uses of IB across the many diverse sites of its adoption; also evident is a set of dynamic tensions produced as the progressive visions entangle with instrumental realities. IB is emblematic of the growing prominence of international education, and the transnationalizing of schooling, under wider globalization processes.

Diez Cosas Que Maestros Mexicanos Deben Saber De Las Escuelas Estadounidenses, Edmund T. Hamann

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Tough Teachers Actually Care: An Ethnographic Look Into The ‘Problematic’ Role Of Teachers As Figures Of Authority Under Learner-Centered Education, Julie Lucille Haber Del Valle

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Teacher authority is culturally valued among Filipinos. This authority however poses a threat to the fundamental principles of learner-centred education as it arguably perpetuates ‘teacher-centered’ instruction and obstructs positive student-teacher relationships which are necessary for student learning. This problematic role of teacher authority is examined in this study by investigating what constitutes good pedagogy in one class within a rural school in the Philippines. With this research problem, this study used ethnographic research approach to examine what students and teachers understand about ‘classroom authority’ and its perceived value in good pedagogy within a specific and cultural place. Ethnographic data in …
