What Do We Value? Research On Technology Education Problems, Issues, And Standards In The United States, Philip A. Reed

STEMPS Faculty Publications

Technology education has seen significant changes since the early 1990's. The paradigm shift from industrial arts has been widely received. Communication tools have merged the global community and standards have helped unify content. While many of these changes have been positive, there are compelling calls for research to support technology education practice. How are we addressing this need? More importantly, is the research we are conducting adding value to technology education practice? This study presents a review and synthesis of published research, as well as graduate research, to address these questions. Specifically, research that has addressed recognized problems and issues …

Good (Best) Practices For Electronically Offered Degree And Certificate Programs, Scott L. Howell, Katherine Baker

Faculty Publications

Who would have ever imagined the effect of one set of distance education principles developed 10 years ago (1995)? At a time in the history of distance- and e-learning, when many associations, organizations, and institutions set about to define themselves and those standards by which their constituents would be held accountable for quality practices, one set of standards has emerged preeminent the work of the Western Cooperative of Educational Telecommunications known as Best Practices for Electronically Offered Degree and Certificate Programs. Even Though the original 17 principles enumerated in 1995 have evolved to 27 in 2005, all institutions of higher …

Blended Learning Systems Definition, Current Trends, And Future Directions, Charles R. Graham

Faculty Publications

The term blended learning is being used with increased frequency in both academic and corporate circles. In 2003, the American Society for Training and Development identified blended learning as one of the top ten trends to emerge in the knowledge delivery industry (Rooney, 2003). In 2002, the Chronicle of Higher Education quoted the president of Pennsylvania State University as saying that the convergence between online and residential instruction was “the single-greatest unrecognized trend in higher education today” (Young, 2002, p. A33). Also quoted in that article was the editor of the Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks, who predicted a dramatic …

The Continuing Challenges Of Technology Integration For Teachers, Pamela Morehead, Barbara Labeau Sep 2005

The Continuing Challenges Of Technology Integration For Teachers, Pamela Morehead, Barbara Labeau

Essays in Education

Technology development in the beginning of 21st century has changed not only the way classrooms appear, but also necessitates a change in how students in the classrooms learn. However, a problem continues to exist related to teachers using technology in meaningful ways for instruction. . In this article, we suggest that school districts use a curriculum mapping process to help teachers initially understand their curriculum more deeply. We posit that once teachers have an understanding of curriculum and learning processes, technology integration is possible. Once linkages form between what students need to know and teachers’ knowledge of how technology is …

All three hypotheses were analyzed with a two-way MANOVA test. …

Communication Technology And Pedagogical Power, Maurice Tardif Jul 2005

Communication Technology And Pedagogical Power, Maurice Tardif

Essays in Education

The ideas put forward here, although supported by empirical studies on the work of teachers and their profession (Mukamurera, 1998, 1999; Lessard and Tardif, 1996; Tardif and Lessard, 1999), examine, mostly from a philosophical and sociological perspective, the foundations of educational communication with respect to the role and meaning of ICTs in education. This article presents a critical reflection, wholly theoretical and non-objectifying, on the relation between ICTs and teaching. Because it is critical in nature, this reflection is not neutral. It is based on suppositions concerning the nature of teaching, and, in broader terms, on human communication and the …

Is Your Selection Of Content Delivery Vehicles Closely Aligned With Your Pedagogical Goals?, David N. Yearwood

Essays in Education

The instructional techniques utilized by educators are largely influenced by their knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning theories and also by their own experiences as a student. Modern classroom technologies have added another dimension to teaching and learning by virtue of its potential for explanatory and exploratory understanding of course content. However, determining how to effectively utilize such tools in one’s practice may elude educators who lack an understanding of electronic pedagogy—the art and science of teaching and learning with technology. This paper will examine factors guiding classroom practices, the need for educators to have more than a cursory …

Creating The Online Learning Community For Distributed Education Doctoral Programs, Miguel Ramlatchan

Distance Learning Faculty & Staff Publications

Many colleges and universities now readily embrace the Internet as a viable distributed learning delivery model. As such, the Internet is a valuable tool to attract the highest quality students to an institution’s academic programs. However, while this may work well at the undergraduate or master’s level, many institutions maintain a required residential or internship requirement as part of a doctoral program. This interactive learning community is a vital aspect of a quality doctorate program. This paper presents a means to create an online learning community to replicate the residential graduate student experience. This goal is accomplished through the collaborative …

A Technology Integrated Curriculum For An 8th Grade History/Civics Class, Kathy Colleen Chavez Jan 2005

A Technology Integrated Curriculum For An 8th Grade History/Civics Class, Kathy Colleen Chavez

All Graduate Projects

To ensure educational technology is used effectively, educators must put together a curriculum that will encourage students to ask questions and think about what they need to learn (Schrum, 2003). They must seek out professional development in the use of appropriate technology and become models of life-long learning for their students. In using technology within the classroom, educators must become comfmiable with and then develop ways technology can enhance what they teach (Schrum, 2003). This project's goal was to develop a …
