As generative AI tools like ChatGPT become more common in higher education, writing instructors face the challenge of guiding students toward effective and ethical use, particularly in asynchronous environments where immediate feedback is limited. This presentation reports on an exploratory study that addresses this challenge by shifting attention from AI’s outputs to students’ moment-by-moment writing processes. Grounded in applied linguistics approaches to writing research and process-tracing methods, the project employed case studies with both expert and novice users of GenAI. To increase the accessibility and utility of lecture capture recordings, schools may utilize automated speech recognition (ASR) to generate closed-captions and transcripts. But, how accurate are these systems? This study analyzed 50 ASR-generated transcripts using word error rate (WER) and further sought to determine factors that impact accuracy. Only 19 of 50 (38%) transcripts met the 99% accuracy standard required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The lecturer's accent was the most significant factor affecting accuracy, though medical jargon also presented a challenge. These findings suggest system improvements and manual review are necessary to ensure students receive accurate information.

In Fall 2025 I completed my Interdisciplinary Leadership doctoral capstone, "Perceptions of Implementation from Higher Education Participants in Online Course Design Professional Development". The purpose was to determine if and to what degree transference had taken place from training to regular practice by instructors. Twelve GovState faculty participated in Quality Matters workshops on online teaching best practices facilitated from March 2021 to June 2023. Interviews with study participants revealed common themes and were compared to training responses and usage in Blackboard courses to determine transference. Healthcare decisions often require patients to interpret numerical risk information under stress, yet many struggle with low numeracy, which can distort comprehension and undermine informed consent. Well-designed visual aids can improve diagnostic inference, calibrate confidence, and support better choices, especially for patients with limited numeracy, but their impact depends on whether users can actually interpret the format accurately. This study explores the online learning experiences of students with disabilities (SWDs) at a South African university during the pandemic, investigating how institutional policy and AI-supported tools can address their challenges. Universities must actively engage with civil society to reduce inequalities and foster meaningful partnerships. This paper reports on a qualitative case study of a service-learning pilot project conducted in two large Information Systems courses involving over 250 students. Students collaborated in groups with local Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) to apply their theoretical knowledge to solve real-world problems. Data was collected via an online survey containing open-ended reflection questions, yielding 331 quotations from 289 respondents. This data was analysed using a deductive thematic analysis. This study investigated the gratifications contributing to compulsive YouTube use among university students. Compulsive YouTube use, marked by an inability to regulate consumption despite negative impacts to the user, is analysed through the Uses and Gratifications Theory (U&G) and Compulsive Internet Use (CIU). Specifically, the study examined how different gratifications—such as emotional support, habitual viewing, and escapism—drive compulsive use patterns. The classroom pedagogies are evolving significantly with Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). The students in a Food Supply Chains class completed a project for various agricultural products describing 12 factors and 7 supply chain principles. They reflected on the use of GenAI and how it impacted their knowledge and critical thinking skills. The students scored GenAI high on ‘relevancy, diverse topics, significance, and sufficiency;' the repeated use of GenAI for food supply chains enabled them recognize the importance of sustainability and ESG factors in the management of natural resources. There were differences in students use and benefits with GenAI use.
