It was my fourth year of teaching at a Brooklyn elementary school when the COVID-19 pandemic forced school buildings, and the entire city, to enter a world of lockdown and quarantine. New York City was an early epicenter of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, and the virus quickly revealed severe racial and socioeconomic disparities across the city. A disproportionate number of cases, serious illnesses, and death has been experienced by low-income Black and Latinx communities. At the same time, 2020 also ushered in a national racial reckoning following the May murder of George Floyd.

Participatory Learning (PL) integrates several learning approaches, engaging students throughout the entire assignment process for both online and face-to-face courses. Beyond simply providing a solution, students also craft a problem (problem-based learning), grade each other (peer assessment and feedback), evaluate themselves (self-assessment), and can view others’ work (learning by example). The purpose of this study was to measure the perceptions, thoughts, and interactions of avatars between players of a text-based RPG called Lusternia while also examining the rhetorical choices behind the creation of a character and how the user chooses to interact through this character. Prior research indicates that online spaces are used by those with social anxieties to find potential comfort in a non-physical location, surrounded by like-minded people. The demographical and thematic trends suggest that most research is skewed towards few geographical locations (USA, Europe, India, China, Hong-Kong) and recent time periods (2018-2020) and scattered across publications from varied disciplinary traditions. The purpose of this study was threefold. First, it examined K-6 pre-service teachers’ Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) self-efficacy for math content area. Second, it identified the impact of Technology Knowledge (TK), Pedagogy Knowledge (PK) and Content Knowledge (CK) self-efficacy on TPACK self-efficacy. Third, it evaluated the change of pre-service TK, PK, CK and TPACK self-efficacy during a semester.
