Alternative education began to surface in North America as early as the 1950s, manifesting in two different venues; in urban areas as a way to provide an alternative for students who were failing school and in suburban areas as a reinvention of the educational system by way of innovative approaches to learning. This dissertation is a study involving ten blue-collar workers who are not currently working towards a four-year degree. The dissertation study analyzed the experiences of the participants from answers they provided during interviews, as well as through observation protocols the researcher took during those interviews. Through narrative inquiry, this study explored the lived experiences of blue-collar workers as it affected their predisposition and interest in attaining a four-year degree. Working class, blue-collar students must negotiate the difficult transition from their working-class culture, to that of the culture of academia, to be successful in college. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic illness costing over $300 billion per year in the United States with an estimated 100 million individuals with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Complications due to diabetes place individuals at increased risk for heart attack, stroke, amputations, blindness, kidney failure, disability, and early death. Education has been shown to be effective in improving health behaviors that decrease complications due to diabetes. Common risk factors for development of diabetes are modifiable behaviors such as sedentary lifestyle and obesity. The purpose of the qualitative study was to investigate the perceptions of principals, teachers, and parents regarding the implementation of the Arkansas Dyslexia Law. Principals, teachers, and parents were interviewed in regard to multiple aspects of the state’s mandated dyslexia law implementation. The overall findings of this study revealed that the Arkansas Dyslexia Law had substantial effects in Arkansas Schools on program funding, interventions and basic understanding of statutory requirements. Although findings indicated that the training of teachers and interventionists created an initial delay of services in some schools, the majority of participants agreed that the dyslexia intervention program selected …

Low academic performance and progression rates for African American college students continue to pervade American colleges and universities. This problem leads to less than desirable academic success and a continuance of the achievement gap between African American and White students enrolled in undergraduate programs. This quantitative study explored the perceptions of Arkansas’ K-3 educators regarding the effects of school entry age on young male students, kindergarten through third grade. The purpose of the study was to examine educators’ beliefs about whether these young males encountered more difficulties in reading and mathematics, were less developmentally ready for skills necessary to be successful in their grade and showed more difficulties in social interaction, following directions and staying engaged in tasks when compared to their older male classmates. This qualitative study examined the perceptions of first-year principals toward Arkansas’ Beginning Administrator Mentoring Program. The study sample included seventeen first-year principals from the 2017-2018 school year. Semi-structured interviews were used to draw conclusions and to make recommendations for state agencies, superintendents, and universities wanting to implement or to make improvements to their beginning building-level leader preparation programs. Prior research confirmed the following findings from the study: 1) Mentoring support for novice principals is critical to first-year building-level leadership; 2) Additional learning opportunities are needed for novice principals during their first year as building-level leaders; and 3) Preparation needs do …

Returning veterans from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom are an emerging student population at Arkansas State University. Many of these student-veterans are diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder coupled with traumatic brain injury, are therefore, considered to be a culture-sharing group. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship of gender equity to faculty compensation, career advancement, and access to leadership roles in colleges of business in Finland, Jamaica and the United States. This quantitative study, anchored by feminist, human capital and socialization theories supported the emergence of a conceptual framework of societal gender equity. Although many studies have shown good effectiveness of student-centered instruction in a variety of educational settings, relatively few have focused on alternative learning environment (ALE) programs. This research study compared the learning outcomes of ALE students in a one rural Arkansas delta school sequentially utilizing a teacher-centered and a student-centered learning environment. Additionally, this research addressed how each environment nurtured independence skills, leadership, and social growth. This case study examined the perceptions and concerns of Tennessee high school English and math teachers regarding the implementation of RTI2 within a general secondary education using the theoretical framework of the concerns-based adoption model (CBAM) proposed by (Hall, 1979). Specifically, the Stages of Concern Questionnaire (SoC-Q) portion of the CBAM was utilized. This study explored associations between acting school principals’ perceptions of state mandated professional development in preparation of TESS evaluations in the field. The study sample included 20 practicing principals that had completed TESS training. Personal interviews were used to draw conclusions and make recommendations to the Arkansas Department of Education on ways to make TESS professional development and preparations more applicable to practicing principals. This study explored female refugees’ perceptions and life experiences at the Za’atari Camp in Jordan. While the study explored challenges and difficulties refugee women have endured while living in the camp, emphasis was placed on how they faced these challenges, coping mechanisms used for overcoming and enduring such circumstances, and what new life roles they had to assume.
