An Analysis Of Degree-Granting Institutions And Number Of Articles Published By Their Graduates, Don W. Stacks, Mark L. Hickson Iii Aug 1983

An Analysis Of Degree-Granting Institutions And Number Of Articles Published By Their Graduates, Don W. Stacks, Mark L. Hickson Iii

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Using publication data from major speech communication journals, this article examines institutional prestige by tracing where published authors earned their highest degrees. Rather than ranking departments by current faculty output, the study credits articles to the institutions granting authors’ degrees, arguing that graduate productivity offers another indicator of program influence. The analysis reports patterns by degree level, departmental affiliation, and degree granting institution, then compares the resulting rankings with earlier studies based on departmental productivity and editorial board membership. The article identifies broad overlap among several ranking approaches while cautioning that publication counts do not measure article quality and may …

Come On Administrators: Get Off Our Backs, Gordon R. Owen Aug 1983

Come On Administrators: Get Off Our Backs, Gordon R. Owen

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Drawing on experience as a postsecondary speech educator, this commentary critiques administrative policies that prioritize publication counts over teaching quality and faculty judgment. It argues that pressures tied to enrollment decline, retrenchment, tenure insecurity, and managerial self preservation can make faculty the scapegoat and reduce educational quality. The essay challenges assumptions that teaching quality cannot be measured, that research and publication are equivalent, that publication totals are universally accepted measures of excellence, that submission readily produces publication, that publication guarantees quality, that experimental quantitative work should outrank other forms of inquiry, and that conference travel is justified only by presenting …

Thinking About Teaching, Research, And Administration: A Response To "Come On Administrators", John Sullivan Aug 1983

Thinking About Teaching, Research, And Administration: A Response To "Come On Administrators", John Sullivan

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Written as a response to the preceding critique of academic administration, this essay argues that communication faculty should engage administrative decision making through the same skills they teach, including persuasion, group process, conflict management, and organizational communication. It challenges a “leave us alone” posture and emphasizes access to committees, institutional service, scholarly reputation, and departmental quality control as practical routes to influence. The discussion defends research and publication as forms of peer teaching, especially in graduate education, while cautioning against simple publication counts. It also considers the limits of student evaluations and concludes that departments should define focused missions suited …

Student Retention: A Top Priority For The 80'S, Mary Lou Hlggerson, David Buckley Aug 1983

Student Retention: A Top Priority For The 80'S, Mary Lou Hlggerson, David Buckley

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Responding to declining enrollments and budget pressures, this article frames student retention as a central concern for college and university administrators. It distinguishes undesirable attrition from appropriate student departure and argues that institutions should focus on students who might persist with better advising, support, and institutional contact. The discussion reviews shifts in retention research from predicting dropouts through admissions data toward improving student and institution interaction. It identifies challenges in tracking potential dropouts, including inadequate information systems, incomplete exit interviews, and limited records on students who leave. The article proposes mapping key interaction points, training faculty and staff in communication …

Evaluative Perceptions Of Doctoral Programs In Communication, 1982, Renee Edwards, Larry Barker

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Updating earlier ACA sponsored evaluations of doctoral programs in speech communication, this survey reports peer perceptions gathered from two Speech Communication Association samples: a random membership sample and a sample of first authors in major communication journals. Respondents rated programs in rhetorical and communication theory, interpersonal communication, organizational communication, mass communication, public address, communication education, oral interpretation, and overall quality. The article presents rankings and ratings by specialty area and compares patterns across the two respondent groups. It emphasizes that peer evaluation is only one indicator of program quality and cautions readers to interpret rankings by broad ranges rather than …

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines stress management as a concern for communication administrators and departmental leadership. It distinguishes stress, strain, generativity, and burnout, presenting a staged model in which pressures may lead from stress to strain and exhaustion unless moderated by coping orientations and coping actions. The discussion treats administrator burnout as a special case of the stress cycle, linking it to frustrated commitments, reduced efficiency, withdrawal, maintenance patterns, and exhaustion. It reviews personal and social resources associated with coping, including perceived control, personal orientation, interpersonal orientation, support systems, and stress management options. The article also considers organizational responses for communication administration, …

Collective Bargaining And Academic Administration: The Significant Overlap, Albert Lewis Aug 1983

Collective Bargaining And Academic Administration: The Significant Overlap, Albert Lewis

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the overlap between collective bargaining and academic administration in communication departments. It uses a four process model of labor negotiation to compare bargaining work with departmental leadership, focusing on distributive bargaining, integrative bargaining, attitudinal structuring, and intraorganizational bargaining. The discussion connects negotiation over scarce resources with administrative decisions about equipment, faculty positions, operating funds, and program priorities. It also considers how problem solving, cooperation, trust, and legitimacy shape both contract administration and departmental governance. The article emphasizes the boundary role faced by negotiators and chairpersons, who must represent constituencies while working with external decision makers. It suggests …

Theory Z And Administrative Management, Judy Cureton, Bob Cureton Aug 1983

Theory Z And Administrative Management, Judy Cureton, Bob Cureton

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Focused on communication departments in higher education, this article considers Theory Z as a framework for administrative management during periods of limited resources. It describes Theory Z as an approach grounded in participatory decision making, egalitarian relationships, delegation, shared philosophy, and attention to human resources. The discussion links these principles to communication administration by emphasizing consensus, quality circles, departmental self study, consumer definitions of program quality, and long range planning. It also addresses hiring, evaluation, rewards, recognition, and the influence of individual interests on departmental objectives. The article closes by discussing trust, subtlety, and intimacy as interpersonal foundations for management, …

Speech Communication Instruction: An Interdisciplinary Assessment, Paul E. Wenger, Robert M. Fischbach

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Addressing interdisciplinary cooperation in communication education, this article discusses obstacles and practical possibilities for linking speech communication instruction with English composition. It situates the issue within departmental traditions, curricular authority, faculty appointments, enrollment pressures, and earlier efforts to connect communication with other fields. The discussion then describes a local arrangement in which fundamentals of speech communication and English composition were scheduled in consecutive hours, required simultaneous registration, and coordinated assignments without changing course listings, faculty loads, or formal departmental structures. Shared themes included outlining, message organization, audience analysis, research, language, speaking, and writing. The article presents the arrangement as an …

A Different View Of Lobbying In The States For Speech Programs, John F. Deethardt

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Focusing on political advocacy for speech programs, this article critiques reliance on paid lobbyists and argues for member based legislative networks within professional associations. It frames political participation as a civic responsibility closely tied to speech communication, suggesting that communication teachers should use disciplinary skills to influence public policy and strengthen collective action. The discussion uses state association activity as a starting point, then contrasts expert driven lobbying with participatory communication networks modeled on other professional organizations. It outlines practical elements of a legislative network, including contact structures, messages, congressional profiles, association documents, legislative summaries, networker responsibilities, and public relations …

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Organized as a practical guide for communication teachers, this article addresses burnout, boredom, stress, and detachment in teaching. It identifies symptoms such as predictable routines, technical monologue, overused verbal patterns, absenteeism, and health related stress responses, then links these difficulties to unmet role related needs. The article presents a chart of needs, actions, and effects designed to help teachers regain perspective, alleviate boredom, get off the treadmill, test what they teach, gain rewards, remain adaptable, and take professional risks. Suggested actions include varying routines, team teaching, changing course design, seeking feedback, writing, joining committees, trying new teaching environments, and confronting …

Recruiting Communication Majors: Tools Used By Selected College And University Departments Of Communication, Claudia L. Hale, Dennis E. Warnemunde

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Using survey responses from non-doctoral speech communication departments, this article examines departmental involvement in recruiting undergraduate and graduate communication majors. It situates recruitment within declining enrollments, changing labor markets, and concerns about how marketing may shape academic identity. The study asks whether departments are actively involved in recruitment and which tools they use. Findings suggest that many departments reported stable or increasing enrollments, often connected to mass communication offerings, flexible curricula, career orientation, and departmental reputation. Common recruitment tools included mailers, high school visits, phone contacts, forensic programs, advising, and advertising. The article emphasizes that departments should participate directly in …

Campus And Community Graduate Assistant Programs, Gerald V. Flannery

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Amid reductions in federal and state support, this report describes a communication department strategy for expanding graduate assistantship funding through campus and community partnerships. The department solicited nonprofit organizations, selected businesses, and university units with communication related needs, offering graduate students’ assistance with public relations, speeches, news releases, photography, brochures, newsletters, and related tasks. The report explains how tuition and fee waivers, university foundation donations, and tax deductible contributions could support assistantships while benefiting participating agencies and campus offices. It presents the Community Program as a way to diversify support beyond normal graduate school funding and notes early pledges, future …
