Toward A Definition Of Communication: Speech Communication In The Context Of The Field Of Communication, Theodore Clevenger Jr.
Toward A Definition Of Communication: Speech Communication In The Context Of The Field Of Communication, Theodore Clevenger Jr.
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Reconsidering earlier attempts to define communication, this article argues that communication and speech communication are better understood as fields of study than as unified disciplines with a single core. It uses a Wittgensteinian model of overlapping strands to explain how diverse specialties such as rhetoric, television production, phonetics, advertising, organizational communication, nonverbal communication, and oral interpretation can belong to the same field without sharing one common element. The article rejects narrow definitions that would exclude legitimate areas of inquiry and instead proposes identifying enduring questions that connect speech communication specialties. It contributes to field definition by framing coherence as a …
A National Survey Of Faculty Salaries In Radio, Television, And Film, Garland C. Elmore
A National Survey Of Faculty Salaries In Radio, Television, And Film, Garland C. Elmore
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Reporting results from a national salary survey, this article examines compensation for full time radio, television, and film faculty at four year institutions offering majors in the field. It compares salaries by rank, teaching experience, department type, and geographic region, with departments grouped as broadcasting, communication, journalism, mass media, and speech. The article finds variation across department types and regions, while noting that radio, television, and film salaries generally lag behind broader faculty salary averages reported for other disciplines. Tables provide detailed salary comparisons by rank, experience, department, and region. The article contributes to communication administration by offering benchmark data …
A Faculty Perspective On Academic Employment Opportunities, Bruce E. Gronbeck
A Faculty Perspective On Academic Employment Opportunities, Bruce E. Gronbeck
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Written as a reflective assessment of academic employment prospects, this article considers job opportunities for communication graduates in elementary, secondary, and higher education. It identifies positive indicators in school settings, including certification, basic skills mandates, communication curriculum labels, and continuing attention to speaking and listening. For higher education, it points to demand in business, professional, organizational, broadcasting, film, mass communication, and renewed rhetorical studies, while also noting enrollment decline, budget pressure, and possible departmental vulnerability. The article cautions departments against overcommitting permanent resources during periods of high demand and urges coordinated work across educational levels to sustain communication education and …
Priorities For Program Survival, Stanley F. Paulson
Priorities For Program Survival, Stanley F. Paulson
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Written from a dean’s perspective, this article identifies factors that can strengthen speech communication programs during periods of budget pressure and program review. It argues that communication benefits from broad societal growth, employer demand for speaking, listening, interpersonal, and writing abilities, and strong student interest, but also faces economic retrenchment and possible overproduction of academic doctorates. The article recommends four priorities for program survival: high quality research, stronger relationships with other disciplines, balance between theoretical study and competence based instruction, and development of public constituencies including alumni and campus partners. It frames these priorities not only as defensive strategies but …
Sexual Harassment: A Protected Species On Campus?, Bonnie Gene Ritter
Sexual Harassment: A Protected Species On Campus?, Bonnie Gene Ritter
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Arguing from shared academic values rather than from legal documentation, this article examines how sexual harassment can be protected when academic freedom and collegiality are applied too broadly. It contends that faculty communities may use legitimate principles to shield behavior that harms students, colleagues, and institutional trust. The article identifies areas where vague professional standards can enable abuse of power, including mentoring, advising, recommendations, assistantships, funding, and grading. It also criticizes closed internal responses that delay policy development, resist outside inquiry, and protect offenders more than victims. The article contributes to academic ethics by urging clearer limits on professional freedom …
Sexual Harassment In Academic Settings: Implications For Personal Ethical Behavior, Christine Oravec
Sexual Harassment In Academic Settings: Implications For Personal Ethical Behavior, Christine Oravec
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Opening with examples from communication and university settings, this article examines sexual harassment as an ethical problem in academic life. It reviews studies of harassment incidence, definitions, perceived seriousness, and consequences, while emphasizing power differences between faculty and students, possible manipulation of academic rewards, and harms to confidence, mentoring, evaluation, and institutional trust. The article distinguishes personal, institutional, and legal concerns, then focuses on ethical responsibilities that remain even when conduct is not formally prosecuted. It also discusses student use of sexuality, harassment of men, and harassment of faculty women. The article concludes with personal conduct guidelines for instructors, including …

Law Training As Preparation For Communication Administration, David Jamison
Law Training As Preparation For Communication Administration, David Jamison
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines law training as a resource for communication administration and academic leadership. It identifies legal study as a source of habits that may help administrators analyze problems, narrow disputes, practice advocacy, reason through probabilities, and attend to ethical responsibility. The discussion first reviews what legal education seeks to impart, including attention to experience, analysis, advocacy, probable judgment, and professional ethics. It then applies these assumptions to department heads, deans, and program administrators who manage scarce resources, curriculum change, faculty concerns, institutional politics, and arguments for program value. The article does not claim that lawyers make superior administrators. Instead, …

Developing Communicative Skills In Non-Native Speakers Through Dramatic Techniques, Madeline Brand
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Designed for language and communication instruction, this article presents dramatic techniques as a way to develop oral communication skills among speakers for whom English is not a first language. It describes the limits of grammar drills and formal classroom settings, then frames drama as a practical method for creating motivation, reducing anxiety, and encouraging meaningful speech. Techniques include pantomime, dialogs, improvisation, role playing, interviews, choral speaking, and storytelling. The article presents these methods as tools for increasing student participation, social confidence, listening, cultural awareness, …
