A Teacher's Pronunciation Manual, Nancy Iglehart Foote

A Teacher's Pronunciation Manual is a compilation of various techniques, games and technical information to aid the teacher in his work on pronunciation in the classroom. There are several methods for minimal pair drills, sample tongue twisters, diagnostic pronunciation tests and advice on making pronunciation tapes. Each sound in English has a discussion of its production, various minimal pairs, sample sentences and exercises and one or more techniques for the classroom. A bibliography is included for the further reference.

The following paper is a report describing a TEFL teacher training program taught to the International Career Training students at the School for International Training, Brattleboro, Vermont. It includes : a two-week detailed lesson plan of classroom activities for module participants, a description of their practice-teaching with sample lesson plans and evaluations, participants' evaluations of the course, suggestions for improvement of future modules, and administrative details involved in setting up a course of this type on the SIT campus.

A Critique Of Language Learning And Theory In The Audio-Lingual Method Of Teaching English As A Foreign Language, Stephen Gregory Hanchey

In this paper I investigate the claims on which many present ESL methods are based and examine them in view of recent developments in both learning theory and linguistics. There are reasons to think that the audio-lingual method is grounded in inadequate theories of learning and linguistics; if so, this warrants experiments in new methods and re-examination of such currently acceptable teaching methods as repetition, imitation, and pattern practice. In particular, I examine the practices of the audiolingual method which are based on behaviorist and structural linguistic theories, especially those practices which are extensions of theories about child language acquisition, …

The purpose of this project is to present some lesson plans for teachers of English as a second language (ESL) to children in the first years of school to show the potential of numerical concepts to teach ESL. Hopefully reading or looking at the samples in creating units in ESL with numbers as a content matter can give teachers ideas about how to create their own lesson plans using this or different content matter. The Resource Center of the School for International Training's first three-week workshop in methodology for teachers of English as a Second Language was designed to encourage program participants to explore their individual interests independently, to share their ideas and professional experience in a series of ten evening workshops. Materials in the Center included a library of texts and books discussing ESL methodology and theory, collections of games, realia, visual aids for language teaching, and supplies including audio-visual equipment for making original classroom materials. The center was deemed successful, a viable idea for future development.

This project is one section of the Independent Professional Project of John Millet. His project defines the philosophy, organization and development of the English Workshop at S.I.T., of which the work in the Games Room was an integral part. The resources in my section of the project are offered as evidence of the in-depth development of one aspect of the Open Corridor plan and it hopefully will be useful rescource to teachers using games and those wishing to get involved in individualizing activities in language classes and in continuing development of the English Workshop. This report is about team teaching in two practice teaching experiences, one is Spanish and the other in EFL. Its purpose is to explore the pros and cons of team teaching and is primarily based on personal experience and research. The team teaching experiences related in this report share a number of similar points. However, one was based on a hierarchical relationship between the two teachers and the other was not. Therefore, there are also a number of differences corresponding to the organization of the teams. The similarities and differences are discussed in the conclusion.
