Developing An Angled Perspective As Teacher Educators: Using Narrative Reflection To Disrupt The Funding Of Identity In Teacher Education, Brittany A. Aronson, Esther A. Enright, Tasneem Amatullah

Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning

Building capacity in teachers to teach students skillfully and respectfully across the diversity gap is complex work that requires teachers to learn to see with what we term as angled perspective. If an angled perspective is learnable, then it is teachable. Using our narratives as religiously and ethnically diverse women teacher educators, we share through our own learning and growth, how this type of analysis can contribute to coalitional building for teacher education, and thus K-12 teachers. Through our conceptualization of identity theory, positionality, and intersectionality, we argue angled perspectives contribute to solidarity work in education. We share implications …

Stereotyping: An Open Conversation On The Establishment, Nature, And Impact Of Stereotypes On Society, Christina M. Van Essen

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

Stereotypes are generalizations about groups of people that have impacted predominantly marginalized communities. We typically use stereotypes against a generalized other and some stereotypes have become part of our perceptual sets. This activity attempts to re-humanize stereotypes by confronting students with known stereotypes and makes students reflect on the impact of stereotypes on people’s lives.

Latino Family Engagement In A Network Of Catholic Bilingual Schools, Gabrielle Oliveira, Eunhye Cho, Olivia Barbieri Jul 2021

Latino Family Engagement In A Network Of Catholic Bilingual Schools, Gabrielle Oliveira, Eunhye Cho, Olivia Barbieri

Journal of Catholic Education

In this article, we examine how a Network of Catholic Bilingual Schools (NCBS) serves Latino populations by examining the leadership’s narratives of the school services and outreach. By employing a survey with 16 principals in the NCBS, we argue that the rate of engagement is similar between Latino and non-Latino parents, although the nature of the activities varied. Despite the long-held belief that Latino parents are less likely to participate in schooling than non-Latino parents, we found that Latino parents committed their participation in schools across cultural, linguistic, or religious activities. We highlight how principals acknowledge and describe Latino families’ …

This article provides a synthesis of current research and theory that makes a case for using graphic novels to improve adolescent literacy achievement through multimodal, equitable learning opportunities for English learners (ELs) while meeting the required English Learner Proficiency Standards (ELPS). Supported by multimodal theory and culturally responsive teaching (CRT) approaches, research shows that graphic novels are inspirational teaching tools for adolescent ELs to engage more deeply with reading and writing. Specific recommendations for classroom use of graphic novels include a focus on a) motivation and engagement, b) discussions, c) visual information, and d) multimodal composition. Educators can make use …

Using Interactive Notebooks To Help Ell Students Find Confidence In Writing, Jessica L. Horne, Rebecca Harper Jul 2021

Using Interactive Notebooks To Help Ell Students Find Confidence In Writing, Jessica L. Horne, Rebecca Harper

Language Arts Journal of Michigan

Writing can be a challenge for students whose first language is not English. The number of English Language Learners in the United States is increasing exponentially year after year. Educators can easily find themselves overwhelmed and unsure how to help these students with their understanding and ease of use with English. ELLs may find it difficult to write in their non-native language. Due to this issue, these students can lack a sense of confidence in writing if they are not given the adequate support needed to achieve this task. The use of interactive notebooks is a simple, strategic tool to …

The research design and methodology of this study take into consideration the study’s focus on culturally responsive school leadership through the theoretical triad …

Engaging The Disengaged: The Zone Of Proximal Distance Between Deliberately Silenced Educators And Preferably Unheard Latino Immigrant Parents, Jose Antonio Velazquez Jul 2021

Engaging The Disengaged: The Zone Of Proximal Distance Between Deliberately Silenced Educators And Preferably Unheard Latino Immigrant Parents, Jose Antonio Velazquez

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The five Latino parents in the three ethnographic case studies presented in this document were experienced with stepping into third space zones of discomfort as undocumented immigrants unwelcome to the United States. They could have chosen to remain silent and invisible. Instead, they entered third space visibility that amplified their presence and voice as immigration reform activists. They recognized and accepted the risks of amplified outspoken visibility: possible deportation and family separation. They also acknowledged the risks of silent submission and invisibility: vulnerability to exploitation and generational disempowerment. They created disruptive third space forms of civic engagement that synergistically produced …

Beyond Language And Academics: Investigating Teachers’ Preparation To Promote The Social-Emotional Well-Being Of Emergent Bilingual Learners, Amy J. Heineke, Elizabeth Vera Jun 2021

Beyond Language And Academics: Investigating Teachers’ Preparation To Promote The Social-Emotional Well-Being Of Emergent Bilingual Learners, Amy J. Heineke, Elizabeth Vera

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

In recent years, institutions have responded to changing school populations by preparing teachers for the growing number of emergent bilingual learners (EBLs). But this preparation largely focuses on supporting students’ academic learning and language development, despite enhanced attention to social-emotional well-being in wider educational circles. This comparative case study seeks to understand whether and how teachers are prepared to facilitate this integral component of student learning in five schools with linguistically diverse populations and varied program models to serve EBLs. We first probe how teachers draw from various facets of their preparation to support EBLs’ social-emotional well-being, including teacher education, …

A Tesol Service Learning Program In Rural Michigan: An Innovative Approach To Preparing Pre-Service Teachers, April M. Burke, Sarah Case, Caitlin Hamstra

MITESOL Journal: An Online Publication of MITESOL

Central Michigan University offers a TESOL service learning course that provides pre-service teachers the opportunity to apply their understanding of course content while addressing the needs of school-aged and adult emergent multilinguals. An innovative aspect of the course is that it provides clinical experiences, prior to student teaching, at the university’s English Language Institute and at multiple sites within a rural K-12 school district. To contribute to an understanding of how to prepare pre-service teachers while supporting emergent multilinguals in rural communities, the authors describe the development and research basis of the course, discuss the benefits of the course and …

High-Stakes Education: Dual Language Immersion In Portland, Oregon, Andrew Maclean Jun 2021

High-Stakes Education: Dual Language Immersion In Portland, Oregon, Andrew Maclean

University Honors Theses

This paper provides evidence and background information to support the claim that Dual Language Immersion (DLI) is the optimal k-12 education program to reduce the achievement gap between English Language Learners and native speakers of English, while also providing extraordinary benefit for Foreign Language Learners in the United States. This paper draws on Second Language Acquisition theory and recent education policy to show that the language situation in the United States would benefit greatly from the continued and amplified support of Dual Language Immersion programs over other programs like monolingual English immersion, transitional bilingual immersion, and developmental bilingual immersion. The …

Written Corrective Feedback In Efl: Combining Error Codes And Metalinguistic Explanation, Yoshimasa Ogawa Jun 2021

Written Corrective Feedback In Efl: Combining Error Codes And Metalinguistic Explanation, Yoshimasa Ogawa

Journal of Response to Writing

The present study evaluated the effects of a combined form of written corrective feedback (WCF) on English as a foreign language (EFL) students’ writing accuracy. The combined WCF consisted of unfocused error-code WCF and focused metalinguistic explanation. Different forms of WCF were administered to two groups of Japanese EFL students in two consecutive years, and the effects of the feedback were compared based on the number of grammatical errors that the students made before and after receiving feedback. The original version (single combined WCF) provided metalinguistic explanation only once for each of eight target grammatical forms, whereas the intensive version …

Vietnamese Americans: History, Education, And Societal Context, Stacy M. Kula, Vinh Q. Tran, Iraise Garcia, Erika Saito, Susan J. Paik

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

While Asian Americans are often depicted as one high-achieving group, there are in fact a wide diversity of Asian American populations that each have their own history and acculturation experiences in the United States. Vietnamese Americans are a particularly unique group; having come with other Southeast Asian refugee groups after the Vietnam War, they are a relatively recent addition to U.S. society with very different circumstances of arrival in comparison with groups from other regions of Asia. This article takes a historical lens to understand the unique factors surrounding Vietnamese American entry to the United States—including policy, societal reception, co-ethnic …

For each category, I summarized the data explored and described, and for most of the categories, I provided supporting details to add depth.

The Seaaster Scholars Collective: A Story Of Homemaking In Academia, Jacqueline Mac, Varaxy Yi, Vanessa Na, Latana Thaviseth, Malaphone Phommasa, Linda Marie Pheng

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

How do we make a home in spaces not built for us? What does an academic home for Southeast Asian American (SEAA) women look and feel like? This is the story of how a collective of SEAA women came together to create an alternative space in higher education. Continuing the radical act of resistance modeled by other Black, Indigenous, and women of color scholars, the SEAAster Scholars Collective uses a feminist epistemological approach to further their mission—to advance knowledge and understanding of the postsecondary educational experiences of SEAA students, staff, and faculty.

Enacting An Equity Framework With A Teacher And Students In An Urban Elementary Classroom: A Qualitative Study, Samantha J. Haraf

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This purpose of this study was to engage a fifth grade teacher and students in the exploration and application of the EFE (Education for Equity) conceptual framework, and to develop understandings of how EFE functioned in this context. This framework, developed around a decade of equity-focused research in elementary contexts, outlines research-based categories of practices for equity work in elementary schools, and it draws attention to areas lacking attention in the literature. Using and extending from case study methods and participatory methods, I worked with a teacher and her students in this urban classroom for approximately six months in both …
