Personality As A Criterion For Faculty Tenure: The Enemy It Is Us, Perry A. Zirkel Jan 1984

Personality As A Criterion For Faculty Tenure: The Enemy It Is Us, Perry A. Zirkel

Cleveland State Law Review

Faculty tenure has been the subject of continuing concern and controversy in American higher education. Problems in this area, including the lack of definitive standards for evaluating tenure candidates, have been highlighted by the recent downturn in the economy and the resultant decline in both enrollment and employment in colleges and universities. This trend is actively demonstrated by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals decision in Mayberry v. Dees. This Article advocates and proposes a more exacting judicial review of faculty tenure cases that are based on collegiality or other such personality criteria. Initially, the operational context of faculty tenure …

The article compares salaries by faculty rank, institutional type, institutional size, and degree programs offered. Making The Transition From A Large University To A Small College, Manuel I. Kuhr Jan 1984

Making The Transition From A Large University To A Small College, Manuel I. Kuhr

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Reflecting on long experience at a small public college, the essay considers the personal, professional, and institutional adjustments involved in moving from large university assumptions to small college teaching. It emphasizes acceptance of diverse students and colleagues, the centrality of undergraduate instruction, and the need for renewal from within when research support and professional travel resources are limited. The piece also discusses institutional change, shifting student expectations, faculty evaluation, curriculum decisions, and the balance between traditional communication content and emerging areas such as film, organizational communication, and argumentation. The essay contributes to communication administration by framing small college work as …

Professionalism In Educational Theatre, Clyde Bassett

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

The essay reviews debates about professionalism in college and university theatre programs, placing contemporary concerns within a longer history of practical theatre training in higher education. It summarizes recurring issues raised in a panel on educational theatre, including administrative support, program objectives, faculty qualifications, facilities, student recruitment, curriculum design, faculty assignments, production practices, and retention standards. The piece distinguishes professionalized training from broader liberal arts or extracurricular approaches while noting the difficulty of balancing rigorous practical preparation with general education. Making The Transition From A Large University To An Established Small College Department, William A. Ternent Jan 1984

Making The Transition From A Large University To An Established Small College Department, William A. Ternent

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

The essay offers guidance for faculty moving from large university settings to established small college communication departments. It contrasts large university assumptions about specialization, research, graduate programs, and abstract inquiry with small college expectations centered on teaching, responsiveness, institutional history, and student interaction. The piece cautions against treating the small college as a career refuge or undeveloped frontier, arguing instead that successful transition requires attention to local needs, curricular growth, cooperative program development, and the ability to solve immediate institutional problems. It also emphasizes the reduced resources and expanded responsibilities often found in small college settings. The essay contributes to …

Entries address higher education, business, government, medicine, journalism, unions, and international contexts, with attention to gender, power, reporting barriers, remedies, and institutional responsibility. The bibliography serves as a resource for administrators, counselors, faculty, and policy makers seeking research, legal guidance, and practical …

Straight Talk, Tough Issues: Tenure In Times Of Retrenchment, Alvin Goldberg Oct 1983

Straight Talk, Tough Issues: Tenure In Times Of Retrenchment, Alvin Goldberg

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Addressing tenure during periods of institutional retrenchment, this article explains tenure as a protection for academic freedom rather than simply a guarantee of economic security. It reviews common criticisms of tenure, including claims that it protects unproductive faculty or limits hiring flexibility, and distinguishes those concerns from cases involving incompetence, misconduct, or financial exigency. The article argues that although tenured faculty may legally be dismissed when financial exigency is properly established, doing so can weaken the conditions that sustain academic freedom. It cautions that program elimination during budget crises may threaten precisely the kinds of intellectual independence that tenure is …

Three Communication Responsibilities Concerning Sexual Harassment, Bonnie Wilson Buzza Oct 1983

Three Communication Responsibilities Concerning Sexual Harassment, Bonnie Wilson Buzza

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Framing sexual harassment as an issue of communication ethics and responsibility, this article argues that speech communication professionals should help create informed, sensitive, and practical discussion about harassment on campus. It distinguishes unwanted harassment from consensual attention, notes the role of power in many incidents, and explains that legal definitions do not fully resolve ethical responsibilities. The article identifies three communication responsibilities: discussing the issue honestly and supportively, telling a harasser directly when conduct is unwelcome, and encouraging potential harassers to consider audience, feedback, intent, and effect before speaking or acting. It emphasizes self esteem, assertiveness, institutional policy, grievance procedures, …

An Overview Of The Canadian Communication And Journalism Scene, Thomas L. Mcphail, Rlchelle Larsen

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Surveying communication and journalism education in Canada, this article reviews the uneven development of university programs and the continuing tension between professional training and liberal arts preparation. It identifies established and emerging programs across several provinces, noting stronger development in some regions and slower institutional growth in others. The discussion gives particular attention to the long process that led to the creation of a graduate communication studies program at the University of Calgary, including earlier proposals, media industry support, curricular debates, and arguments for interdisciplinary preparation. The article situates communication education within broader social, political, economic, legal, and cultural changes …

Tables provide detailed salary comparisons by rank, experience, department, and region. The article contributes to communication administration by offering benchmark data …

A Faculty Perspective On Academic Employment Opportunities, Bruce E. Gronbeck Oct 1983

A Faculty Perspective On Academic Employment Opportunities, Bruce E. Gronbeck

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Written as a reflective assessment of academic employment prospects, this article considers job opportunities for communication graduates in elementary, secondary, and higher education. It identifies positive indicators in school settings, including certification, basic skills mandates, communication curriculum labels, and continuing attention to speaking and listening. For higher education, it points to demand in business, professional, organizational, broadcasting, film, mass communication, and renewed rhetorical studies, while also noting enrollment decline, budget pressure, and possible departmental vulnerability. The article cautions departments against overcommitting permanent resources during periods of high demand and urges coordinated work across educational levels to sustain communication education and …

Sexual Harassment: A Protected Species On Campus?, Bonnie Gene Ritter Oct 1983

Sexual Harassment: A Protected Species On Campus?, Bonnie Gene Ritter

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Arguing from shared academic values rather than from legal documentation, this article examines how sexual harassment can be protected when academic freedom and collegiality are applied too broadly. It contends that faculty communities may use legitimate principles to shield behavior that harms students, colleagues, and institutional trust. The article identifies areas where vague professional standards can enable abuse of power, including mentoring, advising, recommendations, assistantships, funding, and grading. It also criticizes closed internal responses that delay policy development, resist outside inquiry, and protect offenders more than victims. The article contributes to academic ethics by urging clearer limits on professional freedom …
