The Challenges Of Online Courses For The Instructor, Pearl Jacobs
The Challenges Of Online Courses For The Instructor, Pearl Jacobs
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Universities across the country are steadily increasing their use of online courses. Society's demand for lifelong learning will encourage the advancement of distance learning. Research tells us that today the average person changes careers every ten years. In addition, the U.S. Department of Labor estimates that about 10% of workers change jobs every year. These trends suggest a constant need for continuing education and re-education. The online delivery of education is well suited for this. To be effective, however, there are several required components. This paper will review some of these essential components.

The Relationship Between Self-Determination, Achievement Goal Orientation And Satisfaction With The Learning Experience : Working With Adult Lifelong Learners, Jane Rodd
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This exploratory study investigated how self-perceptions of self-determination and of achievement goal orientation were related to self-perceptions of satisfaction with the learning experience in a population of 495 adults engaged in non-formal lifelong learning through participation as amateur members of the United States Dressage Association. Multivariate statistics were utilized to investigate the effects of self-determination (autonomy, competence and relatedness) and achievement goal orientation (mastery-approach, mastery-avoidance, performance-approach, and performance-avoidance) on self-reported satisfaction with the learning experience; the six satisfaction sub-constructs were opportunities to improve (knowledge and skill), release and diversion (from everyday life), social aspects (interaction with others), (attitudes of) people …

Emergency Medical Service (EMS) educators are faced with the daunting task of providing prehospital care providers with quality continuing professional education (CPE) while meeting the needs of various stakeholders. This study sought to find how EMS educators make CPE offering decisions by examining three primary areas: the sources of information used to generate CPE topic ideas, factors that influence decision making, and strategies used to collect and analyze data. Additionally, a comprehensive list of CPE offered by study participants from the last two years was generated, which demonstrates how these three areas drive EMS CPE. Keywords: Emergency Medical Services, EMS, …

Research suggests that high quality academic advising is central to student success. The quality of advising, however, is undoubtedly linked to the training and professional development received by advisors. Unfortunately, the current research related to advisor training and professional development is limited. In addition, while advising is provided by both faculty and professional staff, the perspectives of professional advisors is scarcely represented in the literature. The purpose of this study was to analyze the workplace learning experiences of professional advisors through the lens of adult learning. Specifically, this study sought to understand how advisors learn to perform their roles, both upon …

A Needs Assessment Of Knowledge, Skills, And Values For Urban Planning Professionals Based On Competencies Set Forth By Professional Planning Organizations, Chade Saghir
Wayne State University Dissertations
Continuing education and training is pivotal in today's fast-paced technology driven society. A profession is defined by the theories and techniques that competent practitioners utilize in their everyday work. Therefore, determining the competencies that practitioners must possess for any given profession is a prerequisite for a respected profession. Most professions are bounded by competencies that are dictated by professional organizations and education programs, yet the real test is how practitioners view these competencies as they relate to their job. For a profession to reach the ultimate goal of improving society the first step is to align professional organization, education, and …

Interaction is a critical component of distance education and involves the transfer of information between the learner and content, learner and learner, or learner and instructor (Moore, 1989). Current distance education literature has examined the role of interaction, specifically learner-learner interaction, in learning and discussion design to enhance achievement. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of restricted and traditional discussion boards on critical thinking and learning in a graduate-level online distance education course. Findings indicated improved critical thinking in the quality and preparation strategies of initial discussion board postings when participants' views of peer responses to …

Despite conclusive evidence from high performing Higher Education (HE) institutions worldwide demonstrating the benefits of strong alumni-relations, institutions in many evolving countries often neglect their graduates. And this, despite rapid advances in technology that can support ongoing relations. The objective of our year-long project was to address this neglect. We (re)connected with 220 English Pedagogy alumni through a digital newsletter. The newsletter provided a forum for building community and mediating professional development among graduates and current faculty. Our qualitative mini case study focused on uncovering the emotions, perspectives and needs of former students through the lens of sociocultural and identity …

Professional development has evolved from a one day workshop that is isolated from the school setting, into a process that is on-going based at the school site. In order for professional development to be effective in the school environment, administrators need to take adult learners' needs into account when planning training. Professional development needs to be ongoing in the school setting, meeting the needs of the adult learners and evaluated by its effects on student achievement. The administrator is an instructional leader who provides support for staff to continue their growth. This handbook will provide administrators with resources to assist …

Time constraints and professional demands leave practicing professionals unlikely to enroll in extended training such as a semester-long graduate course. Thus, the three-hour continuing education format has become a standard for those in practice. One may ask what sorts of training strategies optimize that format. To explore that, a three hour training program for seventy-six practicing mental health professionals, most of whom self-identified as psychologists, was devised. It made use of primarily antecedent techniques that have been shown to bring about changed perceptions on a number of topics. Content focused on two areas of importance to behavior analysts, the culture’s …

Knowledge Of Pain Management In Older Adults As A Content Area For Continuing Professional Education For Licensed Nurses, Wanda Cleveland Dubuisson
Dissertations
The research of the last 30 years has revealed the inadequacy of pain management in the older adult. Although evidenced-based clinical practice guidelines exist to direct the management of pain in the older adult, health care providers are either unaware or lack the proper understanding of the guidelines. This study investigated the differences in knowledge of pain management in older adults when examining licensed acute care nurses and extended care nurses. It sampled 118 acute care nurses working in two hospitals in Mississippi and 78 extended care nurses working in six extended care facilities (ECF) in Mississippi.

Many older adults are motivated to learn about computers and other new technology; however, they do face obstacles that can prevent or discourage them from pursuing this endeavor. They are just as capable of learning about computers as younger people; they just need encouragement, resources, and programs that are designed and facilitated to meet their needs. The reason these programs are needed and should be available is because they can be very beneficial to their mental health and their community involvement. This resource guide provides information on: (a) benefits of technology, (b) addressing obstacles, (c) motivating factors, (d) tips for …
