Higher Education Institution Choice Behaviors Of International Students On U.S. College Campuses, Anil Tan
Theses & Dissertations
The economic, social, and personal value of education has been realized as motivating factors for seeking a better education overseas by individuals. In addition, political, economic, and educational conditions of home countries impact individuals’ decisions to study abroad. There were over 4 million tertiary students studying outside their home countries in 2011. Nearly 820,000 of those students were studying in higher education institutions in the United States. Students from China, India, and South Korea comprise nearly 49% of the international students in the United States. The increase in the number of students studying overseas and their valuable contributions develop a …

Theses and Dissertations
In this analysis and comparison we look at the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and the Singapore Mathematics Curriculum Framework, standards documents that guide primary and secondary mathematics education in the United States and Singapore respectively. The official Common Core State Standards for Mathematics website claims that the standards have been developed to be "internationally benchmarked, so that all students are prepared for the 21st century". Singapore has recently been recognized as a world leader in mathematics education. We investigate the claim that the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics are internationally benchmarked by comparing the Common Core State …

The Response To A Daily, Structured Literacy Intervention And Its Effect On Struggling Readers‟ Comprehension, Amanda Bradshaw
Education Masters
This action research investigates how a daily, structured literacy intervention effects struggling readers‟ comprehension. Struggling readers lack the literacy foundations needed to be successful readers and make meaning from text. A variety of data was collected including the following: teacher interviews, student questionnaires, Running Reading Records and field observation notes. The data show three emerging themes: developing mastery in literacy learning, belonging to a community of learners and building positive self-esteem: the link between literacy learning and behavior. The results showed that struggling readers benefit from a daily, structured literacy intervention that focuses on the key literacy foundations needed for …

Textbook Alternatives: Library Supported Options For Students And Faculty, Michele D. Behr, Julie Hayward
Textbook Alternatives: Library Supported Options For Students And Faculty, Michele D. Behr, Julie Hayward
University Libraries Faculty & Staff Presentations
The issue of course textbooks continues to be a challenge in higher education. For students the primary concern is the skyrocketing costs: spending several hundred dollars for required textbooks per semester at a time when tuition and fees continue to rise. Consequently, students are borrowing, renting or simply forgoing purchasing textbooks to alleviate some of the financial burden. For those students who are unable to purchase textbooks, are they still receiving the same high quality education? Although faculty members empathize with students’ frustrations concerning textbook prices, they may not be aware of the alternative resources and services offered by the …

The Case For A New College Governance Structure In Nevada: Integrating Higher Education With Economic Development, Magdalena Martinez, David F. Damore, Robert Lang
Lincy Institute Reports and Briefs
As Katz and Bradley (2013) document, the confluence of partisan politics and budget cuts have left the federal government and to a lesser extent, state governments impotent to address the countless economic and education challenges facing the United States. Out of necessity, metros and regions are taking the lead in collaborating, innovating, and governing in Post-Recession America. Instead of waiting for federal or state governments to impose prescriptive, one-size fits all “solutions,” localities are seizing opportunities to strengthen their economies by working with stakeholders to develop policies tailored to their unique and complicated needs.

Familial Dialects, Amanda King
Familial Dialects, Amanda King
MFA in Photography and Integrated Media Theses
Using the framework of scientific investigation, ‘Familial Dialects’ explores the languages – systems of signs and codification of those signs - of individual members of my family, and the metaphors that arise from their interaction with pieces of the natural world. Each of the pieces combine an inherent form and an organizing action as a means of representing an individual’s form of expression. These familial dialects are created and translated using the methodologies of a naturalist - collection, dissection, observation, and classification. The pieces draw meaning from the connotative associations built from familial connections as well as from broader cultural …

Fidelity Of Implementation, Teacher Perspectives And Child Outcomes Of A Literacy Intervention In A Head Start Program: A Mixed Methods Study, Dawn Davis
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The success of early childhood interventions have been influenced by the degree to which they were implemented with fidelity (e.g., Davidson, Fields & Yang, 2009; Dusenbury, Brannigan, Falco, & Hansen, 2003; Elliot & Mihalic, 2004), meaning “the degree to which teachers and other program providers implement programs as intended by the program developers” (Mellard & Johnson, 2008, p. 240). This study examines relations among implementation fidelity, teacher characteristics, their perceptions, and child literacy outcomes within a preschool literacy intervention using a mixed methods design.
This study examines child literacy outcome data from 247 preschool children and fidelity, perceptions and demographic …
Supporting Positive Parent-Toddler Relationships And Reducing Toddler Tantrums: Evaluation Of Pcat-E, Tara M. Sjuts
Supporting Positive Parent-Toddler Relationships And Reducing Toddler Tantrums: Evaluation Of Pcat-E, Tara M. Sjuts
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
At the most fundamental level, a positive parent-child relationship is the foundation of child success. However, the toddler period may present difficulties for the parent-child relationship. As toddlers explore their autonomy, they challenge parents with noncompliance and temper tantrums, which may be difficult for the parent-child relationship. This study examined the impact of an extension of Parent-Child Attunement Therapy (Parent Child Attunement Therapy – Enhanced; PCAT-E) on parenting behaviors, toddler tantrum behaviors, and the parent-toddler relationship. This extension featured eight individual didactic and coaching sessions with parent-child dyads focused on teaching positive parenting skills, effective commands, and emotion language modeling. …

Students' Perceptions Of Recess: An Examination Of Predictors Of Peer Conflict, Kadie Dooley
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Recess plays an important role in students’ school days because it provides students opportunities to interact with their peers in unstructured settings. Some research has explored the relation between peer conflict within school contexts and how it is related to locations of positive play and the presence of adult supervisors. Further, researchers have conducted studies to examine within group differences for gender and grade, as well as between school differences. However, results have been mixed.
This dissertation examined the degree to which the following variables were related to where peer conflict occurs during recess: location of adult supervisors, location of …

Elementary Teachers' Expectations And Perceptions Of School Counselors, Kelly Stapleton
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This qualitative study explored the expectations and perceptions elementary teachers have of school counselors. Participants were current or past students in an elementary education graduate program at a southeastern university. The participants responded to an open-ended online survey that consisted of questions that focused on the demographics of their schools and the expectations and perceptions they had of the school counselor’s roles and responsibilities pertaining to both academic achievement and student behavior. Although responses varied, the data suggests that there was substantial concern regarding the time and availability of the school counselor, implications of the use of counselors as school …
