Investigating The Effectiveness Of Problem-Based Learning In 3d Virtual Worlds. A Preliminary Report On The Hadrian’S Villa Project, Lee Taylor-Helms, Lynne. Kvapil, John Fillwalk, Bernard Frischer
Lynne A. Kvapil
This paper discusses a recent study to test the effectiveness of combining 3D virtual worlds (VWs) with Problem Based Learning (PBL) in archaeological education of undergraduate college students at two American universities. The testbed used was a virtual world of Hadrian’s Villa at Tivoli (Italy), a World Heritage Site dating to the reign of Hadrian (117-138 CE). At both universities courses were offered on the villa using a PBL approach in such a way that the relative strengths and weaknesses of learning based on face-to-face, 2D, and VW presentations could be assessed. The study helped to clarify ways in which …
Reading Together: A Successful Reading Fluency Internvetion, Chase Young, Kathleen A. J. Mohr, Timothy Rasinkski
Reading Together: A Successful Reading Fluency Internvetion, Chase Young, Kathleen A. J. Mohr, Timothy Rasinkski
Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications
The article describes a reading fluency intervention called Reading Together that combines the method of repeated readings (Samuels, 1979) and the Neurological Impress Method (Heckelman, 1969). Sixteen volunteers from various backgrounds were recruited and trained to deliver the Reading Together intervention to struggling readers in third through fifth grade. The differences on the outcome measures between the treatment (n = 29) and comparison (n = 23) were statistically significant. Thus, students in the treatment demonstrated increased reading expression, reading rate, and overall reading scores. Results suggest that Reading Together is a feasible method of increasing students’ reading proficiency and can …

Take Flight, Melody Kelly, Hillary Murray, Olivia Robertson, Erica Jack, Michael Hir, Nicholas Schiefer
Journal of Interactive Humanities
Take Flight is an educational game prototype. Players learn about the lives of post World War I pilots, as they take on new tasks and find a new way of life. As the pilot interacts with different citizens, he learns about ways in which he can use his plane to help. Fields need to be crop dusted. Packages need to be delivered. Goods need to be smuggled. The pilot's reputation is affected by the types of tasks he chooses to complete. As the game progresses, users learn about everyday uses for planes in the 1920s and about the dangers of …

Career Readiness: Arkansas And Beyond, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter
Policy Briefs
This policy brief explores how career and technical education is being approached in Arkansas and elsewhere. New career and college readiness initiatives have been undertaken in a variety of settings, including the academy model that is highlighted in this brief. Additionally, the brief will explore career readiness from an international and national perspective and discuss the rationale for why career readiness matters for a considerable number of students in the public schools and workforce development programs across Arkansas.
Content Integration In Elementary Schools, Lauren Lucas
Content Integration In Elementary Schools, Lauren Lucas
College of Education Presentations
There never seems to be enough time to teach all that teachers want to teach and all that is required in elementary schools. The purpose of this inquiry project is to take a deeper look into what it is that teachers are required to teach within the Common Core State Standards and see if there is a way to integrate these standards with other content areas. The goal is to provide more information for teachers and other professional educators as to the benefits and drawbacks of content integration. Research was performed through personal instruction, observations of instruction, and interaction with …

This article describes the process of cultural adaptation at the start of the implementation of the Parent Management Training intervention-Oregon model (PMTO) in Mexico City. The implementation process was guided by the model, and the cultural adaptation of PMTO was theoretically guided by the cultural adaptation process (CAP) model. During the process of the adaptation, we uncovered the potential for the CAP to be embedded in the implementation process, taking into account broader training and economic challenges and opportunities. We discuss how cultural adaptation and implementation processes are inextricably linked and iterative and how maintaining a collaborative relationship with the …

Class(Ed)Room: Individualized Student Disciplinary Policies As Ignoring The Current Economic Order, Nicole H. Awwad
Class(Ed)Room: Individualized Student Disciplinary Policies As Ignoring The Current Economic Order, Nicole H. Awwad
Capstone Collection
Students are socialized into the institution of education at an early age. Obedience to authority is the objective of much of the learning done in school. Teacher expectations and perceptions of students affect student behavioral and academic performance within the context of school. Student economic and material conditions affect their availability for learning in the school setting. This research questions the application of discipline policies across a student body with diverse academic, economic and social histories. In this case study of one rural Vermont school - tracking, teacher expectations and student economic, academic and behavioral history are assessed for correlation. …
Starting From Scratch: Meaningful Integration Of Information Literacy Through Collaborative Course And Assignment Design, Chris Sweet, Meghan Burke
Starting From Scratch: Meaningful Integration Of Information Literacy Through Collaborative Course And Assignment Design, Chris Sweet, Meghan Burke
Scholarly Publications
Instruction librarians are all too familiar with well-intentioned research papers and assignments that reduce information literacy to a simplistic checklist (must include 4 peer-reviewed sources) or set of skills (use interlibrary loan, cite materials properly). Librarians and classroom faculty should recognize that information literacy cannot just be magically imparted to students through a single assignment or library instruction session. Becoming information literate requires repeated practice in a variety of contexts. How often have you wished for the opportunity to just sit down with a faculty member and start from scratch when designing an assignment –or even better- an entire course? …

International Collaborations In Literacy Research And Practice., Cynthia B. Leung, Janet C. Richards, Cynthia A. Lassonde
Faculty Books
Literacy researchers and educators are currently involved in exciting international literacy projects. However, many in the field are not aware of these initiatives. In compiling this edited volume, our intent is to provide a resource book for university instructors and research faculty with examples of international literacy projects and what was learned from the projects. Chapter contributors offer stories of real people who collaborate across nations to exchange ideas, promote literacy development, and increase global understandings. The literacy initiatives presented in this book show how literacy colleagues have provided opportunities for students and educators of different countries to communicate in …

I have written and illustrated a children’s book as well as planned a selection of lesson plans that can be used in addition to the book titled Henry’s BIG Adventure. Illustrated children’s books are very valuable to the development of children by aiding in comprehension. According to Mary Renck Jalongo, author of Young Children and Picture Books, children can learn so much from reading stories, even fiction ones. Henry’s BIG Adventure centers on a young boy who finds an old photo album with pictures of several places he has never been before. The album leads him on a big …

The Role Of School District Science Coordinators In The District-Wide Appropriation Of An Online Resource Discovery And Sharing Tool For Teachers, Victor R. Lee, Heather M. Leary, Linda Sellers, Mimi Recker
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
When introducing and implementing a new technology for science teachers within a school district, we must consider not only the end users but also the roles and influence district personnel have on the eventual appropriation of that technology. School districts are, by their nature, complex systems with multiple individuals at different levels in the organization who are involved in supporting and providing instruction. Varying levels of support for new technologies between district coordinators and teachers can sometimes lead to counterintuitive outcomes. In this article, we examine the role of the district science coordinator in five school districts that participated in …
