Integrating Ctls Into Campus Strategic Planning Through An Effective Brainstorming Process, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe Dec 2009

Integrating Ctls Into Campus Strategic Planning Through An Effective Brainstorming Process, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

Charlie Sweet

One way Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTLs) can position themselves at the epicenter of campus activity and insert themselves into strategic planning is by transforming group work through an effective brainstorming process that the authors have developed called Ideation Development for Excellence in Academic Learning (I.D.E.A.L.). The authors explain the evolution of the process in a learning community from best practices in brainstorming through a working model. The process has been effective with actual groups both on and off campus (vs. laboratory conditions). “Collaboration drives creativity because innovation always emerges from a series of sparks—never a single flash of …

A Symposium Model For Doctoral Students Of Color Seeking Faculty Positions In Higher Education, Samuel Hinton, Sherwood Thompson

Samuel Hinton

The purpose of this article is to share a model for motivating and mentoring students of color who are finding it difficult to complete their doctorate degree because of personal, social, and institutional challenges. Students do not pay a fee to participate in the symposium. They are motivated among other things to build relationships, and establish contacts and networks with a cohort of scholars interested in helping them complete their studies. In addition, the program prepares these students to apply for faculty positions at this university in the mid-west and other institutions of higher education when they graduate. Student populations …

Foreign Languages And Sustainability: Addressing The Connections, Communities And Comparisons Standards In Higher Education, Eleanor Horst, Joshua Pearce

Joshua M. Pearce

This article describes an interdisciplinary collaboration that combined the study of German language with instruction in environmental issues (sustainable development). The project, involving both an independent study and a classroom unit, allowed students to make connections between disciplines, establish contact with German-speaking communities outside the university, and make cultural and linguistic comparisons. By expanding the German-language content on the Web site Appropedia.org, which is devoted to global sustainable development, students took an active role in learning by creating content that can be read and used by the global community of German speakers. This project provided a model for successful interdisciplinary …

The Development And Validation Of Australian Indices Of Child Development—Part Ii: Validity Support, Ann Sanson, Mary Hawkins, Sebastian Misson

Dr Sheldon Rothman

The two outcome indices described in a companion paper (Sanson et al., Child Indicators Research, 2009) were developed using data from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC). These indices, one for infants and the other for 4 year to 5 year old children, were designed to fill the need for parsimonious measures of children’s developmental status to be used in analyses by a broad range of data users and to guide government policy and interventions to support young children’s optimal development. This paper presents evidence from Wave 1data from LSAC to support the validity of these indices and their …

Christopher W Tremblay, Ed.D

Research on the concept of meritocracy and its role in college admissions is the major focus of this article. It explores the factors that contribute to the gatekeeping process and provides a historical context that led to the evolution of today's admission protocol. It focuses specifically on the strict meritocratic practices of many colleges as they continue to preserve the longstanding and deeply rooted admission traditions. The authors provide a discussion about options for reforming the system, along with recommendations and topics that require additional research and exploration.

KidsMatter (KM) is an Australian national primary school mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention initiative. The South Australian Minister for Education has now commissioned further analyses of the findings, focusing on children with a disability in South Australia. This new report examines whether there is a correlation between students with a disability and mental health problems, whether implementation and engagement processes differed for parents and teachers of students with a disability, and the impact of the program on students …

In the second book, findings from service learning were added to the mix, with the trio of values education, quality teaching and service learning referred to …
