Two Teachers Learn From Their Students: Examining Teaching, Learning, And The Use Of Learning Centers, Barbara Dian O'Donnell, Rebecca Hitpas
Two Teachers Learn From Their Students: Examining Teaching, Learning, And The Use Of Learning Centers, Barbara Dian O'Donnell, Rebecca Hitpas
Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research
Two teachers, a kindergarten teacher and university professor, used action research to study the use of learning centers in their respective classrooms. Becky, a kindergarten teacher, collected and analyzed qualitative data in the form of interviews, work samples, anecdotal records, checklists, videotapes, and culminating performance task documents. She found that at-risk students made progress in achievement, accountability, and motivation. Inspired by Becky’s study, her university advisor/teacher redesigned a learning center assignment that proved to be more powerful in getting teacher candidates to understand, design, and use centers.

Book Review: Pink, D.H. (2009). Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, Kathleen Fite
Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research
This three-part, six-chapter book has taught me, an educator, more about motivation than any other resource I have used in the past. Part One encourages us to think beyond our rewardand-punishment system to a new way of thinking about motivation. Part Two presents what he refers to as Type I, “intrinsic behavior where we have an innate need to direct our lives and how we learn; and, how this type of behavior enhances performance and satisfaction.” Part Three, referred to as the Type I Toolkit, provides a variety of resources designed to support Type I behavior. Pink makes connections to …

Teachers' Perceptions Of Implementing Response To Intervention In Meeting Academic Needs Of At-Risk Students In Kindergarten Through Second Grade., Tammy Conchita Valentine
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The passage of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (2004) increased educators' awareness of Response to Intervention (RTI) as a means of providing high-quality instruction and interventions matched to student needs. The challenges that came with RTI were meeting every student's need, implementing scientific research-based interventions, and expecting mastery of grade-level standards.
The purpose of this study was to create a foundation of knowledge through exploratory case study interviews in 4 rural school districts in East Tennessee. All participants were certified teachers of kindergarten, 1st grade, or 2nd grade students. The guided interview approach was used to identify teachers' …

An Exploration Into How Physical Activity Data-Recording Devices Could Be Used In Computer-Supported Data Investigations, Victor R. Lee, Maneksha Dumont
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
There is a great potential opportunity to use portable physical activity monitoring devices as data collection tools for educational purposes. Using one such device, we designed and implemented a weeklong workshop with high school students to test the utility of such technology. During that intervention, students performed data investigations of physical activity that culminated in the design and implementation of their own studies. In this paper, we explore some of the mathematical thinking that took place through a series of vignettes of a pair of students engaged in analyzing some of their own activity data. A personal connection to the …

A Self-Study On Building Community In The Online Classroom, Derek Lee Anderson, N. Suzanne Standerford, Sandy Imdieke
A Self-Study On Building Community In The Online Classroom, Derek Lee Anderson, N. Suzanne Standerford, Sandy Imdieke
Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research
This paper portrays a year-long self-study of three teacher educators who examined their individual and collective practices in relation to teaching online. Because of its emphasis on reflection on practice, we chose a self-study method with the goal of improving our own practices (Hamilton, 1998). During the past year, we shared our course syllabi, assignments, and student work; we wrote and shared journal entries, met semi-monthly as critical friends, and revised and reanalyzed the ways we taught online. Our department’s lack of guidelines or expectations for online courses, challenges from resistant colleagues about the integrity of online courses, and pressure …

A Comprehensive Step: A Book Review Of Teachers Taking Action, Suzanne Porath
Networks: An Online Journal for Teacher Research
Action research, as a term, has been around for over half a century, but it has only become accepted as legitimate research within the last two decades. In education, action research both challenges and is informed by traditional scholarly research and promises to empower teachers to become active participants, and not just consumers of university-based research. Cynthia Lassonde, an assistant professor at the State University of New York College, and Susan Israel, a literacy consultant, have provided an overview of the action research process in their book Teachers Taking Action: A Comprehensive Guide to Teacher Research, a 2008 monograph of …

Exploring Diverse Blended Families: Using Critical Discourse Analysis To Hear Their Voices, Robin Moore-Chambers
Exploring Diverse Blended Families: Using Critical Discourse Analysis To Hear Their Voices, Robin Moore-Chambers
Dissertations
It has been predicted that if you were born in the 1980s and 1990s, there was a one in two chanceof either living in a blended family as a child or as an adult (Coleman, Ganong, & Fine, 2000).In 1989, Glick predicted that in the 21st century, blended families would be the leading family form. Today in 2010, they are far from being a new phenomenon (Stewart, 2008). They are a rapidly growing part of the American population according to Census data and over half of American families may be blended, i.e., formed by (married or non-married) partners with children. …

The Effect Of Raters And Rating Conditions On The Reliability Of The Missionary Teaching Assessment, Abigail Christine Ure
The Effect Of Raters And Rating Conditions On The Reliability Of The Missionary Teaching Assessment, Abigail Christine Ure
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated how 2 different rating conditions, the controlled rating condition (CRC) and the uncontrolled rating condition (URC), effected rater behavior and the reliability of a performance assessment (PA) known as the Missionary Teaching Assessment (MTA). The CRC gives raters the capability to manipulate (pause, rewind, fast-forward) video recordings of an examinee's performance as they rate while the URC does not give them this capability (i.e., the rater must watch the recording straight through without making any manipulations). Few studies have compared the effect of these two rating conditions on ratings. Ryan et al. (1995) analyzed the impact of …

The Expertise Reversal Effect, John Sweller, Paul L. Ayres, Slava Kalyuga, Paul Chandler

When new information is presented to learners, it must be processed in a severely limited working memory. Learning reduces working memory limitations by enabling the use of schemas, stored in long-term memory, to process information more efficiently. Several instructional techniques have been designed to facilitate schema construction and automation by reducing working memory load. Recently, however, strong evidence has emerged that the effectiveness of these techniques depends very much on levels of learner expertise. Instructional techniques that are highly effective with inexperienced learners can lose their effectiveness and even have negative consequences when used with more experienced learners. We call …
Cognitive Load Theory And The Format Of Instruction, Paul Chandler, John Sweller
Cognitive Load Theory And The Format Of Instruction, Paul Chandler, John Sweller
Paul Chandler
Cognitive load theory suggests that effective instructional material facilitates learning by directing cognitive resources toward activities that are relevant to learning rather than toward preliminaries to learning. One example of ineffective instruction occurs if learners unnecessarily are required to mentally integrate disparate sources of mutually referring information such as separate text and diagrams. Such split-source infonnation may generate a heavy cognitive load, because material must be mentally integrated before learning can commence. This article reports findings from six experiments testing the consequences of split-source and integrated information using electrical engineering and biology instructional materials. Experiment 1 was designed to compare …

Não Uma Outra República, A Nossa República, Outra, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
