Barriers To Female Principals: Perceptions Of Female High School Administrators In Georgia, Jane Spires Hilliard
Barriers To Female Principals: Perceptions Of Female High School Administrators In Georgia, Jane Spires Hilliard
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
The purpose of this study was to determine what factors female high school principals and assistant principals in Georgia perceived as barriers to women entering high school principalships. The factors presented to the participants were determined by a thorough review of the literature. A survey instrument with two sections was developed. Section one consisted of 12 factors often mentioned as barriers to women entering high school principalships. These factors were rated on a Likert scale which ranged from strongly agree to strongly disagree. Participants were also given the opportunity to list any other factors they perceived as barriers. The second …

A Descriptive Study Of Public Alternative Schools In Georgia, Willie James Wiley
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
The purpose of this study was to identify the types of alternative schools in Georgia, to describe the characteristics of the alternative schools, and their students, and to determine the primary goals of the alternative schools. The descriptive information was collected from 97 public alternative schools. The data collected by a 44 item multiple response survey included the perceptions of Georgia's alternative school administrators. The survey items were developed from a literature search and site visits to five different models of alternative schools in a large urban school system The responses were categorized to calculate the range, mean, percentages, and …
Characteristics Of Millenium Minority Students And Their Student Organization Involvement, Joyya Pauletta Smith
Characteristics Of Millenium Minority Students And Their Student Organization Involvement, Joyya Pauletta Smith
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
The climates of many colleges and universities are changing to accommodate the needs of the millennium student. For African American students who enroll in predominantly white institutions, the need for programming to alleviate the concerns of non majority students is still a factor in leading students to greater rates of retention. Peer mentoring programs are coordinated to assist in student adjustment to campus as well as the establishment of connections with their campus. Student organizations have also been key in helping students become comfortable within their new environments. For the Minority Advisement Program(MAP), at a Southeastern University, student participants show …
The Relationship Between Noncognitive Dimensions And The Academic Performance Of Student-Athletes, Bradley R. Mcallister
The Relationship Between Noncognitive Dimensions And The Academic Performance Of Student-Athletes, Bradley R. Mcallister
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)
Due to NCAA eligibility guidelines, coaches and administrators have a special interest in the academic performance of student-athletes. Furthermore, as a nontraditional group, it may be useful to use the NCQ to describe student-athletes. Insight into possible influences on their academic performance may help to improve services, especially academic support services, for student-athletes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to extend Sedlacek's use of noncognitive dimensions to all student-athletes, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or age. The research questions this study addressed were 1. Do the scores on the NCQ differ among student-athletes by gender? 2. Do the scores on …

Parenting Among Hispanic And Anglo-American Mothers With Young Children, Pablo G. Cardona, Bonnie C. Nicholson, Robert A. Fox
Parenting Among Hispanic And Anglo-American Mothers With Young Children, Pablo G. Cardona, Bonnie C. Nicholson, Robert A. Fox
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
The authors examined parenting practices and developmental expectations among 38 Hispanic and 38 Anglo-American mothers living in the United States. Mothers of children 3 to 5 years of age completed the Parent Behavior Checklist (R. A. Fox, 1994), a 100-item measure of parents' developmental expectations, discipline, and nurturing practices. In addition, the authors appraised the Hispanic mothers' acculturation and selected them for participation if their scores on an acculturation scale indicated (a) that their lifestyle was predominantly Hispanic and (b) that they had not been assimilated into the dominant culture. The 2 ethnic groups were also divided by socioeconomic status …
The Teaching Portfolio Project: An Evaluative Case Study Of A Portfolio-Based Approach To The Development Of University Teaching, Martijntje M. Kulski
The Teaching Portfolio Project: An Evaluative Case Study Of A Portfolio-Based Approach To The Development Of University Teaching, Martijntje M. Kulski
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This study on the use of teaching portfolios arose from a number of converging trends and policy initiatives within the higher education sector that led to demands for the improvement of, and a more reflective scholarly approach to, university teaching. In Australia, and overseas, institutions have responded to these demands by implementing teaching development and evaluation programs for academic staff that arc based on the use of portfolios. A teaching portfolio is essentially a documentary record of selected aspects of a teacher's work across a range of instructional settings. According to some proponents, portfolios can capture the complexity of university …
Phantom Classmates : A Case Study Of Talented Mathematics Students Learning Via Telematics, Leanne S. Clarke
Phantom Classmates : A Case Study Of Talented Mathematics Students Learning Via Telematics, Leanne S. Clarke
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The main advantages and disadvantages of the Telematics environment for talented mathematics students were investigated through a case study. The case study considered the interaction of, and opinions of 11 Year 9 students and the teacher/researcher. Participants were from nine schools in regional Western Australia, and were withdrawn from face-to-face classes to attend mathematics transmissions. Qualitative data were collected through student interviews, an anonymous questionnaire, tape recording of lessons, and teacher field notes. Students all agreed the main disadvantage occurred if timetabling for Telematics transmissions did not align with their local school class times for the same subject. The teacher …

Challenges In Delivering Library Services For Distance Learning, Cynthia Wright Swaine
Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
The first section of this paper on library services for distance education discusses the status of distance learning in higher education. What distance learning means for libraries is addressed in the second section, including considerations related to diverse locations, agreements with participating institutions, delivery limitations, librarian commitment, and awareness of new ways to deliver services. The third section summarizes requirements for libraries and provides World Wide Web addresses for American Library Association and Canadian Library Association guidelines. On Some Length Biased Inequalities For Reliability Measures, Broderick O. Oluyede
On Some Length Biased Inequalities For Reliability Measures, Broderick O. Oluyede
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
In this note, inequalities for length biased and the original residual life function and equilibrium distribution function with monotone hazard rate and mean residual life functions are derived. We also obtain estimates of the length biased probability density function and hazard function under random censoring. Finally, the Bayesian exponential reliability estimate under length biased sampling using a conjugate prior for the scale parameter is given.

The Influence Of Gender-Role On Upper Primary School Students' Graphic Representations, Tamara Frederiks
The Influence Of Gender-Role On Upper Primary School Students' Graphic Representations, Tamara Frederiks
Theses : Honours
The aim of this research was to study the effect of gender-rule on Year Six students' graphic representations completed during a visual transformation task. The influence of gender on learning has become a significant issue in primary schools and research in the area is needed to inform teachers about gender differences. The significance of the issue relates to the equality of opportunity for girls and boys in the classroom. Drawings are of significance because they provide teachers and parents with a glimpse of the developing child in terms of his or her creative and mental growth, feelings, emotions and world-view. …
