Can Mathematics Be Taught In A Christian Way?, Johan Deklerk Jan 1999

Can Mathematics Be Taught In A Christian Way?, Johan Deklerk

ACMS Journal 2004

Some people would argue that mathematics cannot be taught in a Christian way. Others would say it can be done, but that they are unsure how to do it, and therefore do not do it. Some methods mentioned from time to time will be briefly discussed in this address. The question will be asked whether these techniques bring one closer to a Christian perspective on mathematics. My view is that some of these methods are just not sufficient and that more should be done. More attention should be paid to the context in which a mathematical subject is imbedded. Attention …

Lewis Carroll: Author, Mathematician, And Christian, David L. Neuhouser

ACMS Journal 2004

Although a Christian, an author, and a mathematician, Charles Letwidge Dodgson (better known as Lewis Carroll) wrote very few works in which these three aspects of his person was present. The only examples of him merging these interests are in Sylvie and Bruno and Sylvie and Bruno Concluded. This paper will explore what motivated him to make these works and whether or not they were successful.

The Deconstruction Of Mathematics, David J. Stucki Jan 1999

The Deconstruction Of Mathematics, David J. Stucki

ACMS Journal 2004

Mathematics, as an academic discipline, has stood for many years as the last bastion against a growing tide of intellectual relativism that has become all but ubiquitous. More recently, however, efforts have been made to "humanize" mathematics by advocating a social-constructivist approach to the philosophy of mathematics, both in practice and education. This paper is intended to serve as a critical response to one advocate of this approach, Reuben Hersh (What Is Mathematics, Really?, 1997), and in the process a defense of Platonism.

Considerations For The School Psychologist When Providing Services For Maltreated Foster Children: A Developmental Perspective, Linda Webster Jan 1999

Considerations For The School Psychologist When Providing Services For Maltreated Foster Children: A Developmental Perspective, Linda Webster

Benerd College Faculty Articles

As the body of research on attachment grows, attachment theory is being increasingly utilized by psychologists as a useful way of conceptualizing the problem behaviors that many foster children present. In addition, this paper explores Bowlby’s (1988) model of developmental pathways as a means to understand both normal and abnormal processes and patterns of adaptation and maladaptation. The empirical bases connecting the theoretical principles of attachment with child maltreatment are discussed, and a theoretical rationale for assessment and intervention with attachment-disordered foster children with an emphasis on modifying the child’s negative working model of attachment relationships is presented.

The Developmental Implications Of Parental Loss During Adolescence, Dacni C. Jones

Graduate Research Papers

This paper provides a comprehensive review of the literature that relates to the death of a parent and how this experience influences an adolescent. This review will answer the question of how adolescent cognitive, emotional, and social development is affected when a parent dies. After a brief definition of the words "adolescence" and "loss," the focus of this paper will be on the areas of cognitive, emotional, and social development and the effects of grief on development after a parent dies. This information can help mental health professionals and school counselors understand the impact of living through the experience of …

Ec99-455 Starting An Investment Club, Leanne Manning, Kathleen Prochaska-Cue Jan 1999

Ec99-455 Starting An Investment Club, Leanne Manning, Kathleen Prochaska-Cue

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

When establishing an investment club, one of the most important things for the group to decide is the club's purpose. If all the members are interested in getting rich quickly, the investment club is not the answer. If, on the other hand, members view it as a chance to learn over the years about selecting and making wise investments, the investment club is a great way to accomplish this goal. Investing in the stock market is a long-term proposition and one that should not be taken lightly. Forming an investment club means going into business with 10 to 20 other …

G99-1395 Soybean Seeding Rates, Roger Wesley Elmore, James E. Specht Jan 1999

G99-1395 Soybean Seeding Rates, Roger Wesley Elmore, James E. Specht

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Recommended soybean seeding rates, stand assessment and replanting rates based on Nebraska field research are addressed in this NebGuide. The soybean stand looked horrible late that May. The field had a good seed bed at planting, but rain after planting crusted the soil over the seed furrows. Rain was in the short-term forecast. All other row crops were planted and looked fine, but this field concerned the producer.

Interdisciplinary Teaching And Learning, Deborah Dezure Jan 1999

Interdisciplinary Teaching And Learning, Deborah Dezure

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

Interdisciplinary initiatives are proliferating throughout higher education at an unprecedented rate (Edwards, 1996; Gaff and Ratcliff, 1997; Klein, 1996). They can be found in general education, replacing and augmenting distribution requirements; in emerging disciplines, such as cultural and gender studies, environmental studies, and neuroscience; in new curricular designs, such as learning communities, capstone courses, and service learning; and in the new pedagogies, such as collaborative learning, discovery and problembased learning, and the use of technology, particularly the Internet for instruction.

If we want our students to engage in complex intellectual tasks to integrate the insights of different disciplines, then lets …

Learning Outside The Box: Making Connections Between Co-Curricular Activities And The Curriculum, Myra S. Wilhite, Elizabeth A. Banset Jan 1999

Learning Outside The Box: Making Connections Between Co-Curricular Activities And The Curriculum, Myra S. Wilhite, Elizabeth A. Banset

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

Students have much to gain from the integration of co-curricular activities into the curriculum. In out-of-class experiences, students tend to take greater responsibility for their own learning; they learn from one another as well as their instructors. In addition, cocurricular activities promote personal growth, physical and mental health, academic achievement, social and cultural awareness, and help students formulate short- and long-range goals.

Successful co-curricular programs encourage the development of friendships, a sense of belonging, enhanced intellectual awareness, improved academic performance, an appreciation of different perspectives, and close interaction with faculty and staff members who really care about students.

An Examination Of Communication Competencies For Telephone And Internet Customer Service Representatives, Julie M. Powers Jan 1999

An Examination Of Communication Competencies For Telephone And Internet Customer Service Representatives, Julie M. Powers

Education Masters

The level of service that organizations are providing to their customers is critical to customer loyalty and customer retention. Providing quality customer service should be an organization's top priority. If organizations do not pay attention to the quality of service they are providing to their customers, they may run the risk of being put out of business. To provide quality customer service, an organization must consider the needs of its employees must be addressed internally in order to project a positive image externally. Addressing the needs internally shows that an organization cares about its employees and wants them to grow …

Quality Assurance In Higher Education In Developing Countries, David Lim Jan 1999

Quality Assurance In Higher Education In Developing Countries, David Lim

Support & Other Units (THEi)

In recent years universities in developing countries have followed their counterparts in developed countries in adopting quality assurance to improve the quality of their teaching, research and direct community service programmes. While many of the conditions required for the successful implementation of quality assurance programmes are not present in most universities in developing countries, their adoption will still be useful. Such programmes show how a university's seemingly disparate activities are related to one another to serve a common cause and how the quality of these can best be improved by adopting an integrated approach. In the process, they provide more …

Chlorophyll Meter Assessments Of Corn Response To Nitrogen Management Practices, M. M. Siambi, D. L. Karlen, R. M. Shibles Jan 1999

Chlorophyll Meter Assessments Of Corn Response To Nitrogen Management Practices, M. M. Siambi, D. L. Karlen, R. M. Shibles

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Environmentally sound nitrogen (N) management is necessary to simultaneously achieve high crop yields and protect surface and groundwater quality. We evaluated a hand-held chlorophyll meter as a diagnostic tool for improving management for corn (Zea mays L.). Five N fertilizer rates (0, 67, 134, 201 and 280 kg N ha-1) were evaluated in one study, and in a second study, the meter was used to evaluate the N status of corn plants grown under varying tillage (chisel plow vs no-till), crop rotation (continuous corn vs corn-soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]), and N management treatments. Meter readings were …
