Chatgpt, Can You Generate Multiple-Choice Questions For An Undergraduate Computing Course? An Evaluation Of Its Effectiveness Using Classical Test Theory, Eng Lieh Ouh, Kar Way Tan, Siaw Ling Lo, Benjamin Gan, Yuhao Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Educators are increasingly adopting large language models such as ChatGPT to generate multiple-choice questions (MCQs), yet empirical evidence on the quality of these items in computing education assessments remains limited. This study compares 30 ChatGPT-generated and 30 manually crafted items from an undergraduate software design course, and evaluates item difficulty, discrimination, and distractor quality using Classical Test Theory. We triangulated two evaluations using within-subjects and between-subjects designs. Our quantitative findings show that all three metrics in both evaluations point in the same direction. ChatGPT-generated items are easier, less discriminating, and exhibit poorer distractor quality than manually crafted items. Distractor quality …

Latine Students In Early College Programs In Massachusetts: A Policy Brief, Terri Morgan, Melissa Colón

Gastón Institute Publications

In this policy brief, we discuss the emergence of early college programs in Massachusetts and the possibilities they present, with a focus on Latine students. We begin by providing a brief overview and history of early college as a national intervention, then turn to measures of the initiative's success for Latine students and their families in the Commonwealth. Our purpose is to take stock of Massachusetts’ early college initiative; examine the participation rates and outcomes of Latine students; and provide evidence-based recommendations to policymakers and practitioners for creating more equitable, culturally sustaining, and ultimately more effective programs for participating students.

Academics need both an overarching policy on Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) use in teaching and learning, yet agency in its application across various disciplines. Clarity on the use of the technology for both students and staff is therefore a challenge and characterised by uncertainty given how its application is still unfamiliar. This research examines the organisational context in which Gen AI is being embraced and was conducted by the digital teaching support functions within an Irish university. Students and staff were surveyed (n=1,746) on various aspects of digital use within their education and workplace, including Gen AI. …

Learning The Trade-Off: Simulation-Based Sustainability Education In Marketing, Roisin Vize

Case studies: Digital Education

Digital transformation is reshaping higher education, yet gamified business simulations remain among its most widely used and least examined tools. This case study reports on the use of the HUBRO Sustainable Marketing Simulation, a Sage resource, in Marketing 1, a core first-year undergraduate module at TU Dublin. Sustainability in business education is typically reserved for final-year, postgraduate or elective modules. This intervention instead embedded Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles and balancing the triple bottom line from the first year of a four-year degree. Across two cohorts, 51 teams of three to four students ran a fictional jetpack venture over …
