Faculty Publications: Education
In this chapter, we explain our theoretical grounding and provide a framework for what follows. We outline the twin purposes of this book, as we explain our conceptions of care and excellence and the relationship between the two. Like all academic texts our work here stands about other established frameworks, and we diagram this to illustrate where this text fits in the field. Finally, we include an overview of the chapters that follow to serve as a reader guide.

A Comparison Of Student Motivation Between Two Ukulele Curricula In A Multi-Age Classroom, Jill K. Moth
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Motivation is a topic of high interest to music educators as they attempt to understand what makes their students want to continue learning. The use of the ukulele in the music classroom has grown over the last ten years due to its versatility. Despite its popularity and music educators’ support for its use, very little research exists on students’ motivation while playing it in a general music classroom setting. Therefore, the purpose of this current study is to compare the motivation levels of two groups of multi-age fourth through sixth-grade students learning the ukulele via different curricula in the music …

Primary General Music: Trauma-Informed Instruction In Title I Schools In Post-Pandemic Georgia, Sarah-Ann Higgins
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Despite growing evidence of the need for trauma-informed teaching practices in schools, most music educators have limited training or knowledge of trauma-informed teaching strategies. The need for trauma-informed teaching has grown due to many students and teachers having lived through the collective trauma experience of social isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Inherently social in nature, music classes are an ideal setting to address the unique needs of students who have experienced trauma. Children living in low socio-economic settings are especially vulnerable due to the already increased likelihood of experiencing adverse events that may cause trauma such as child abuse, …
