You Are Here, David Silva Dec 2017

You Are Here, David Silva

David Silva

We’re all acquainted with the question “Are we there yet?”

On a long drive. During that endless transoceanic flight. Sitting through that meeting that drags on. And on. And on. In these contexts, “Are we there yet?” rarely (if ever) proves fruitful. Even if you’re the driver, the pilot, or the committee chair, you may not have much control over the journey’s length. We arrive when we arrive.

There are, however, situations in which posing the question constitutes a meaningful exercise, including when gauging progress on issues of social justice. When it comes to combating society’s -isms and -phobias, regularly …

Teaching Roman Mobility: Digital Visualization In The Classroom And In Undergraduate Research, Micah Myers, Joseph M. Murphy Dec 2017

Teaching Roman Mobility: Digital Visualization In The Classroom And In Undergraduate Research, Micah Myers, Joseph M. Murphy

Joseph M. Murphy

This paper looks at pedagogical applications of our web-based digital visualization project, Mapping Ancient Texts (MAT). We discuss: (1) a course in which students use the web application Carto to create visualizations from geo-spatial information in Cicero’s Letters; and (2) a student-researcher developing a digital visualization of Hannibal’s movements during the Second Punic War. This paper explores how these projects teach important technical skills and engage students in detailed analysis of Roman mobility and history. We also discuss the challenges of using evolving technologies in the liberal arts setting.

“Grieving Like A Normal Person”: Examining Responses To Grief In Nina Lacour’S We Are Okay, Kate E. Kedley, Jenna Spiering Dec 2017

“Grieving Like A Normal Person”: Examining Responses To Grief In Nina Lacour’S We Are Okay, Kate E. Kedley, Jenna Spiering

Kate Kedley

Themes of death, dying, and grieving are not only omnipresent in literature, but are experiences that have shaped all students’ lives in some way. However, teachers are often lacking concrete pedagogical strategies for engaging students with this important topic in their classrooms. In this paper, the authors suggest the use of perspective-taking strategies, grounded in reader-response theories, to deconstruct and analyze characters’ (and their own) experiences with death and dying using the contemporary young adult novel, We Are Okay by Nina LaCour. Rather than considering death and responses to death in concrete terms, death and grief are regarded as topics …

Exploring The Relationship Between Online Discourse And Commitment In Twitter Professional Learning Communities, Fei Gao Dec 2017

Exploring The Relationship Between Online Discourse And Commitment In Twitter Professional Learning Communities, Fei Gao

Fei Gao

Educators show great interest in participating in social-media communities, such as Twitter, to support their professional development and learning. The majority of the research into Twitter-based professional learning communities has investigated why educators choose to use Twitter for professional development and learning and what they actually do in these communities. However, few studies have examined why certain community members remain committed and others gradually drop out. To fill this gap in the research, this study investigated how some key features of online discourse influenced the continued participation of the members of a Twitter-based professional learning community. More than 600,000 tweets …

The Use Of Therapeutic Theater In Supporting Clients In Eating Disorder Recovery After Intensive Treatment: A Qualitative Study, Laura L. Wood Dec 2017

The Use Of Therapeutic Theater In Supporting Clients In Eating Disorder Recovery After Intensive Treatment: A Qualitative Study, Laura L. Wood

Laura L. Wood

In 2007, Wilson, Grilo, and Vitousek made a call for researchers to increase the research for eating disorders, declaring that counselors are “well positioned to make important contributions to the study of eating disorders” including exploring and identifying the “mechanisms of therapeutic change” (p. 212). The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore experiences of participants who were part of an experimental therapeutic theater project after receiving intensive treatment for an eating disorder and to examine how the project benefited their recovery process. The research question was, “In what ways can therapeutic theater support clients in their first …

Understanding Sampling And Recruitment In Social Work Dissertation Research, Rebecca G. Mirick, Ashley Davis, Stephanie P. Wladkowski Dec 2017

Understanding Sampling And Recruitment In Social Work Dissertation Research, Rebecca G. Mirick, Ashley Davis, Stephanie P. Wladkowski

Rebecca Mirick

The field of social work has increasingly focused on improving the quantity and rigor of its research. For many social work doctoral students, their first independent research experience begins with their dissertation, and yet, little is known about the factors that facilitate students’ success during this process. Sample recruitment is one step where significant and unexpected challenges can occur. As social justice is the central value of the profession, social work doctoral students may focus on research with vulnerable or marginalized populations; however, little research has been done that focuses on social work dissertations, samples used, and the process of …

Personal Values Of Principals And Their Manifestation In Student Behaviour : A District-Level Study In Pakistan, Christopher Branson, Sharifullah Baig, Abida Begum Dec 2017

Personal Values Of Principals And Their Manifestation In Student Behaviour : A District-Level Study In Pakistan, Christopher Branson, Sharifullah Baig, Abida Begum

Sharifullah Baig

Although there is growing research evidence to support the view that the leadership practice of the school principal is the second-most important influence on student learning behind classroom teaching, there is no clarity about what, exactly, the principal is meant to do to ensure this outcome. Hence, Leithwood et al. (2010) propose that one of the principal’s important influences on student learning is the ‘rational’ path, which includes the issue of school-wide disciplinary climate. This argues that the principal plays a pivotal role in establishing the school-wide disciplinary climate that aids student learning. This article reports upon research conducted in …

Academic Freedom For Teachers, Larry L. Kraus, Robert L. Stevens Dec 2017

Academic Freedom For Teachers, Larry L. Kraus, Robert L. Stevens

Robert Stevens

The concept of academic freedom is a basic right, if not a Constitutional right, of educators in the classroom and in research. While freedom in research and teaching has traditionally been assumed to be more in the realm of higher education, the ability to make reasonable decisions related to presentation of academic content has been accepted at the K-12 levels as a basic responsibility of instruction.

Limitations Of Communication, Alfonso Ilipollito, Robert L. Stevens Dec 2017

Limitations Of Communication, Alfonso Ilipollito, Robert L. Stevens

Robert Stevens

As college teachers we have a responsibility to communicate to our students, not only for content which leads to understanding the subject matter we teach, but also to motivate and engage students to want to learn that content. Our student body is changing rapidly. Many of us teach not only “first generation” college students, but students that reflect our country’s diversity as well. To be more effective communicators we need to better understand the communication dynamics this change imposes on us.

Let’S Make It Real! Approaching Engaged Learning From Authentic Contexts Across Disciplines, Emerging Case Studies From Southern Cross University, Kristin A. Den Exter, Jonathan Purdy, Adele Wessell, Elizabeth Reimer, Pascal Scherrer, Michael B. Whelan

Dr Kristin den Exter

This paper describes the initial development of three models of engaged learning and teaching (MELT) across a range of disciplines and pedagogical approaches at Southern Cross University, arising from a codesign process as part of the Engaged Learning Incubator Project. What links these approaches is that they are all underpinned by experiential learning and learning that is situated in authentic community and industry contexts. There is a continuum of possibilities for student autonomy within these contexts. The integration of community and student engagement, and identifying the explicit skills required, is being explored in some units via the use of models …

A Measure Of Perceived Chronic Social Adversity: Development And Validation, Jingqiu Zhang, Cody Ding, Yunglung Tang, Chunyu Zhang, Dong Yang Dec 2017

A Measure Of Perceived Chronic Social Adversity: Development And Validation, Jingqiu Zhang, Cody Ding, Yunglung Tang, Chunyu Zhang, Dong Yang

Cody Ding

The goal of this study was to develop a measure that assesses negative daily social encounters. Specifically, we examined the concept of perceived chronic social adversity and its assessment, the Perceived Chronic Social Adversity Questionnaire (PCSAQ). The PCSAQ focused on the subjective processing of daily social experiences. Psychometric properties were examined within two non-clinical samples (N = 331 and N = 390) and one clinical sample (N = 86). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a three-factor model of the PCSAQ, which corresponds to three types of daily social stressors. The final 28-item PCSAQ was shown to be internally consistent, …

The Balance Of Public And Private Identities For Lesbian Teachers, Delanna Kay Reed Dec 2017

The Balance Of Public And Private Identities For Lesbian Teachers, Delanna Kay Reed

Delanna Reed

Abstract

Although tolerance and acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people is growing in the United States, misconceptions and heterosexism still abound. Schools are one of the institutions where traditional gender roles are promoted and homosexuality is often ignored or punished. Too often lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students are bullied by their peers while teachers look the other way. LGBT teachers often fear they will lose their jobs and social standing in the community if they are open about their sexual orientation. This environment provoked me to research lesbian teachers’ perceptions of heteronormativity in their private and …

What To Do For Anxious Kids? Applications Of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Cbt) In Schools, Elana R. Bernstein Dec 2017

What To Do For Anxious Kids? Applications Of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (Cbt) In Schools, Elana R. Bernstein

Elana R. Bernstein

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health problems in children and adolescents (Ollendick & Pincus, 2008). Epidemiological studies since 1986 have reported that, as a group, anxiety disorders are present in approximately 10% of the population of children ages 6-17 (McLoone, Hudson, & Rapee, 2006). Anxiety disorders have a high prevalence rate, an early onset, significant long-term consequences (Le., school drop-out, psychopathology in adulthood, difficulties with social relationships, lower self-esteem, etc.), and a chronic course if left untreated (Ramirez, Feeney-Kettler, Flores-Torres, Kratochwill, & Morris, 2006). However, youth suffering from anxiety disorders are not always adequately identified and provided …

Becoming The Story In The Joyful World Of "Jack And The Beanstalk"., Kathryn F. Whitmore Dec 2017

Becoming The Story In The Joyful World Of "Jack And The Beanstalk"., Kathryn F. Whitmore

Kathryn Whitmore

This article looks into the world of pretend to understand how the invitation to move, to take risks, and to become the story of Jack and the Beanstalk afforded three- to five-year-old children a means to be more than their usual selves. It describes a ten-week process drama residency studied in two preschool settings: first in three classrooms in a rural Head Start school and one year later in two classrooms in an urban Reggio-inspired child development center. The focus is on the compelling effect of engaging preschoolers’ bodies in movement and pretend, particularly for three children who presented what …

Picturebooks And Gender : Making Informed Choices For Equitable Early Childhood Classrooms., Kathryn F. Whitmore, Christie Angleton, Emily L. Zuccaro

Kathryn Whitmore

We examine picturebooks through a feminist lens, understanding that children’s literature and media can limit and expand how young children access gender representations. We describe four categories that increase teacher knowledge to select books with multiple and varied gender representations for children in their classrooms. These four categories are gender binaries, discourses of childhood innocence, intersectionality, and heteronormativity. We illustrate each category with two quality books that maintain and disrupt each theme. We hope teachers will find the categories useful for thoughtfully selecting books for classroom libraries, read aloud, and discussion.

What Does It Mean To Follow? An Exploration Of A Followership Profile In Hospitality And Tourism, Cynthia S. Deale, Donald G. Schoffstall, Eric Adam Brown Dec 2017

What Does It Mean To Follow? An Exploration Of A Followership Profile In Hospitality And Tourism, Cynthia S. Deale, Donald G. Schoffstall, Eric Adam Brown

Eric A. Brown

Although leadership has received considerable attention from many scholars, much less research has focused on those who follow leaders; yet, followers contribute much to the success of an organization. This study explored the followership profiles of stakeholders in hospitality and tourism education. The findings summarize the followership dimensions of a sample of hospitality students, educators, and industry professionals. For each of the five followership dimensions the mean scores for industry professionals were rated higher when compared with students and educators, with courage to participate in transformation being the highest rated among all three groups. Implications for hospitality education are presented.

Bodies In Space/Bodies In Motion/Bodies In Character : Adolescents Bear Witness To Anne Frank., James S. Chisholm, Kathryn F. Whitmore

Kathryn Whitmore

Situated at the intersection of research on Holocaust education and embodied literacies this study examines how an arts-based instructional approach engaged middle school learners in developing empathetic perspectives on the Anne Frank narrative. We addressed the research question: What can adolescents who are using their bodies to gain empathy with Anne Frank teach us about embodied literacies? Digital images and video were used to generate a multimodal analytic method that combined focus group interviewing with the Semiotic Photo Response Protocol and Visual Discourse Analysis. Analyses of performance and visual arts texts illustrated how students layered their understandings as they recast …
