Cost Effectiveness Of Maintaining Students With Emotional Disorders In The Public School System, Robert C. Macmillan, Michael Grimes, Bill Filler, Christie Norton, Nancy Cooper, Teresa Gibson

Robert C. MacMillan

This report examines the cost effectiveness of the Marchus School's 599/1261 Project, one of two programs funded by the State of California, that established an inclusive education program for 17 students with serious emotional disturbances at risk for nonpublic school placements. The project teaches academic, social, and conflict resolution skills by using a social cognitive approach that fosters healthy emotional development and academic achievement. The active support and participation of each student's family is also encouraged. "Wrap around services" provided by mental health and other agencies support the classroom staff and include services such as a one-to-one assistant, a mobile …

Attitude About Engineering Survey, Fall 1995 And 1996: A Study Of Confidence By Gender, Hugh Fuller, Susan C. Grant, Kristine C. Lawyer, Richard L. Porter, Sarah A. Rajala Jun 1997

Attitude About Engineering Survey, Fall 1995 And 1996: A Study Of Confidence By Gender, Hugh Fuller, Susan C. Grant, Kristine C. Lawyer, Richard L. Porter, Sarah A. Rajala

Sarah A. Rajala

One of the primary goals of the North Carolina State University College of Engineering (COE) is to enroll the best undergraduate students possible. One factor hampering the achievement of this goal is the lack of interest of many female high school students in the traditionally male-dominated field of engineering. With no special recruiting activities aimed at informing young women about the field of engineering and recruiting them to our campus, the results are not surprising: even though women represent forty percent of the undergraduate enrollment at the University, they represent just under twenty percent in the COE. In order to …

Relevant Design Experiences For Agricultural And Biosystems Engineers: Team Focus Through Competition, D. Raj Raman, Ronald E. Yoder Jun 1997

Relevant Design Experiences For Agricultural And Biosystems Engineers: Team Focus Through Competition, D. Raj Raman, Ronald E. Yoder

D. Raj Raman

The multitude of specializations within biosystems engineering makes traditional capstone design courses, which typically focus on a single topic, less relevant. In our department, our year-long capstone design experience involves machine component design. While this experience is useful to students in all concentrations, ideally, students concentrating on biological-, food-, and soil and water-engineering will have a capstone design experience that integrates their unique technical capabilities. New capstone courses should also enhance the broader skills of undergraduate engineers, including teamwork, time and resource management, oral and written communication, and integrated computer skills. However, a variety of issues militate against simply adding …

The Evolution Of An Introductory Biological Engineering Course: Design Is The Endpoint!, D. Raj Raman Jun 1997

The Evolution Of An Introductory Biological Engineering Course: Design Is The Endpoint!, D. Raj Raman

D. Raj Raman

Four the past four years, I have taught the sophomore level course, Agricultural Engineering 243 Material and Energy Flows in Biological Systems each spring semester. During the first offering, I used the lecture method to transmit information, and homework assignments and exams to reinforce skills and test comprehension. The greatest weakness of this technique seemed the lack of hands-on experience which I gave my students, and their subsequent lack of physical intuition. Enhancing their physical intuition drove the first curricular revision—using in-class demonstrations and simulations of key physical and biological processes. This technique did not work as well as expected, …

Women's Perceptions Of A "Chilly Climate" And Their Cognitive Outcomes During The First Year Of College, Ernest T. Pascarella, Elizabeth J. Whitt, Marcia I. Edison, Amaury Nora, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Patricia M. Yeager, Patrick T. Terenzini Feb 1997

Terenzini

Linda Serra Hagedorn

In this study of 2- and 4-year colleges, the extent to which women students' perceptions of a "chilly campus climate" were related to first year cognitive outcomes was investigated at 23 institutions. After a variety of potentially confounding influences were controlled for, several negative relationships were found between perceived chilly climates and women's cognitive growth. The negative relationships were more pronounced for women attending 2-year colleges than for their counterparts at 4-year institutions .

Hadhramaut And The Hadhrami Diaspora: Problems In Theoretical History, Syed Farid Alatas Jan 1997

Hadhramaut And The Hadhrami Diaspora: Problems In Theoretical History, Syed Farid Alatas

farid alatas

If we understand history as a field constituted by a type of research and inquiry that concerns itself with human action in the past and is based on the interpretation of evidence, regardless of whether positivist or interpretive methods are used, then it can be said that historical works on Hadhramaut and its diaspora have been written. These works can be divided in broad terms into the two general categories of Arab and Western historiography. Nevertheless, in both cases, owing to certain theoret- ical problems that have beset these works, little progress has been made in the advancement of Hadhrami …

A Modified Model Of College Student Persistence: Exploring The Relationship Between Astin's Theory Of Involvement And Tinto's Theory Of Student Departure, Jeffrey F. Milem, Joseph B. Berger

Joseph B. Berger

This study provides insight into 1st-year undergraduate persistence by using behavioral measures, based on Astin's theory of involvement, to further our understanding of Tinto's theory of student departure. The findings from this study support using an integrated model in which student behaviors and perceptions interact to influence the development of academic and social integration.

Some Dilemmas Confronting The Educational Theatre, Jared Brown Dec 1996

Some Dilemmas Confronting The Educational Theatre, Jared Brown

Jared Brown

"Educational theatre": the term itself implies a dichotomy, or perhaps an amalgam of two quite different phenomena. A tension between the demands of education and the demands of the theatre does indeed exist, and it is the job of the teacher-artist to maintain a harmonious balance between them.

Promoting Identity Development: A New Role For Academic Faculty, Scott E. Hall, Susan J. Sears

Scott E. Hall, Ph.D., LPCC-S

This study examined the influence of a structured curricular intervention on the personal and social identity development of college students. The authors implemented a pretest/posttest design using the revised version of the Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status-2 (EOMEIS-2). Significant posttest results supported faculty’s role in developing students’ capabilities beyond the intellectual domain. Finally, the authors discuss collaboration between academic faculty and student affairs practitioners in contributing toward students’ identity development.
