Roots & Routes: A Re-Imagining Of Refugee Identity Constructions And The Implications For Schooling, Jacqueline Mosselson Dec 2006

Roots & Routes: A Re-Imagining Of Refugee Identity Constructions And The Implications For Schooling, Jacqueline Mosselson

Jacqueline Mosselson

The ways in which refugees are assumed to adapt to United States society have serious consequences on their enjoyment and fulfillment in their schooling experiences. This is further compounded by the incorporation of refugees under a more general umbrella of "immigrant" studies. Here, excerpts are shared from an experiential study of fifteen adolescent Bosnian female refugees in New York City schools to articulate an alternative identity paradigm, roots & routes, which captures the ways in which refugees consciously balance their ethnic and new national identities in understanding themselves, their lives, and how they represent themselves to others. This paradigm enables a ...

The program sets aside structured time and space for the faculty to write.

Modeling The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami For Introductory Physics Students, Gregory A. Dilisi, Richard A. Rarick Nov 2006

Modeling The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami For Introductory Physics Students, Gregory A. Dilisi, Richard A. Rarick

Gregory A. DiLisi

A classroom exercise to model tsunamis is described. The simulations illustrate 3 dramatic signature features of tsunamis: the increase in amplitude as the tsunami moves to shallower water, the corresponding decrease in wavelength and speed, and the increasing steepness of the leading edge. These characteristics typically classify tsunamis as shallow-water waves, which can be confusing to students as they are generated and travel mostly in deep water. The highlight of the activity is the construction of a tsunami tank comprising a wooden frame and clear acrylic sides, which can be used to generate simulated tsunamis that illustrate these properties.

Ethics And School, Arthur Lang

Arthur Lang

My philosophy of education maintains that a liberal education in mathematics, science, history, and literature cultivates reason and knowledge, developing the ability for a student to make practical choices and most importantly, the moral sensibilities of the student. The ethics of the school is essential.

Expeditionary Blended Learning: New Opportunities And Lessons From The United Kingdom, Ian R. Mcandrew, Indra R. Sinka, Michael S. Wills

Ian R. McAndrew

Recent experiences in live course delivery at ERAU's UK campus, combined with dramatic
changes in the operational deployment tempo of US military forces assigned at these bases,
creates both challenges and opportunities. Exploiting experiences with blended learning at The
Open University, traditional learning at the University of Hertfordshire and other UK universities,
and teaching concepts in use within the UK's military staff colleges leads to the proposed
"Expeditionary" model for blended learning within the ERAU European Region. This model can
deliver enhanced student involvement and increased enrollments, provided suitable changes in
ERAU's underlying business model can be ...

Learning To Lead: The College Experiences Of Women University Presidents, Susan R. Madsen

Susan R. Madsen

Although developing leadership is an important topic in the higher education today, the percentage of women found in high leadership positions remains quite low. In fact, little has been published about how high-level women leaders actually developed. This workshop will present the results of two qualitative research studies exploring how 10 women university presidents and 10 women governors became effective leaders, with a particular focus on influential events, individuals, activities, and opportunities during their undergraduate and graduate educational experiences.

Construction Trades Academy At Lakewood High School, Arthur Lang Nov 2006

Construction Trades Academy At Lakewood High School, Arthur Lang

Arthur Lang

Small Schools are schools within schools, autonomous of their district and the larger school building principal in which they reside. They are distinct from one another, focused and committed to equity. They are made up of an interdisciplinary team of teachers that share a few hundred or less students in common for instruction. Giving students an opportunity to engage in the construction industry in their home-town will integrate real-world skills into their study of mathematics and connect their lives to their schools and community, making achievment and graduation more meaningful.

Characterizing Students’ Thinking: Algebraic Inequalities And Equations, Kien H. Lim Nov 2006

Characterizing Students’ Thinking: Algebraic Inequalities And Equations, Kien H. Lim

Kien H Lim

This paper presents the findings of a study that explores the viability of using students’ act of anticipating as a means to characterize the way students think while solving problems in algebra. Two types of anticipating acts were identified: predicting a result and foreseeing an action. These acts were characterized using Harel’s framework, which involves the concepts of mental act, way of understanding, and way of thinking. Categories for characterizing acts of predicting and foreseeing were identified and developed based on thirteen 11th graders’ responses to problems involving algebraic inequalities and equations. The quality of students’ acts of predicting ...

The National Review Of School Music Education : What Is The Present State Of Music Education In Schools?, Sharon Lierse

Dr. Sharon Lierse

In November, 2005 a landmark government report entitled the National Review of School Music Education was released. The report found that there was a great variability in the quality of music education in schools. It was acknowledged that although there are some excellent music programs in schools, there is 'cycles of neglect and inequity' and greater support is required for teachers and the subject itself. The report acknowledged the influence of recent curriculum developments in Australia including integrating the arts into one subject. The paper discusses issues arising from the report and how it has impacted music in Australian schools ...

The Case For An Australian Certificate Of Education, Geoff N. Masters Oct 2006

The Case For An Australian Certificate Of Education, Geoff N. Masters

Prof Geoff Masters AO

The Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training on May 2005 commissioned the Australian Council for Educational Research to investigate and report on models and implementation arrangements for an Australian Certificate of Education. There are ten different certificates currently available across the six states and two territories of Australia that provide a senior secondary school qualification. The first recommendation made by the Review is for national agreement on what should be taught in each school system. The second recommendation is for students across Australia to be assessed against the same standards. This requires the development of natural so-called ‘achievement standards ...

The Paperless Accounting Classroom: The Perceptions And Experiences Of Students In A Newly Designed Course, Steve Teeter, Susan R. Madsen, Jason Hughes, Brent Eager Oct 2006

The Paperless Accounting Classroom: The Perceptions And Experiences Of Students In A Newly Designed Course, Steve Teeter, Susan R. Madsen, Jason Hughes, Brent Eager

Susan R. Madsen

Although financial accounting practices in business have capitalized on the use of technology, this technology has not been fully integrated in higher education for accounting students. While traditional accounting courses laboriously involve rote transcription of debits and credits, educational technology in accounting courses may prove inherently beneficial. Faculty members designed and offered a paperless accounting course that utilized a variety of technologies. This study explored student perceptions regarding the satisfaction and effectiveness of three of these technologies: 1) the Classroom Performance System (CPS) response pad (clicker) from eInstruction.com, 2) PC Tablet (teacher use); and 3) WebCT. This study analyzes ...

Professor Djilali IDOUGHI

Humanizing And Establishing Presence In An Online Course: The Role Of Introductory Videos In Distance Learning, Paula Jones, Maryann Kolloff Sep 2006

Humanizing And Establishing Presence In An Online Course: The Role Of Introductory Videos In Distance Learning, Paula Jones, Maryann Kolloff

Paula Jones

Some faculty may find it difficult, if not impossible, to provide a similar classroom experience online as is provided typically in a face to face class. Faculty members can find it even more difficult to establish an instructional relationship with students in an online course as they do in a face-to-face course. Online learning is known to be more solitary and students report that they feel somewhat disconnected from the class when they take a course online. The challenge in designing online courses is for faculty members to establish their teaching presence by humanizing the online classroom experience for their ...
