Graduate Research Papers

A huge issue in education today is that of inclusion. There is a wide spectrum of beliefs on whether or not all students should be fully included in the general classroom. According to K.S. Stout (2001) in Special Education Inclusion, a solution to this major issue is collaborative or co-teaching. With a push for least restrictive environment, collaborative teaching has become a very important part of the education system. The big question is: How can teachers implement co-teaching into their instruction effectively?

An Investigation Into The Effectiveness Of Paired Reading With The Incorporation Of Additional Error Corrective Procedures, Kathryn Schneider

Theses : Honours

The aim of this literature review was to examine the effectiveness of the Paired Reading (PR) intervention, a one-to-one instruction approach to improving children's fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. The effectiveness of PR in promoting a positive attitude towards reading and in increasing children's sense of self-efficacy in reading was also investigated, focusing principally on children whose level of reading was below what was expected for their chronological age. It addressed the question of how well the intervention can be implemented by parents and explored the strategies used in PR to elucidate what aspects of the intervention may contribute to its …

The Power Of Student Discovery And Sharing, John Hilton Iii

A Chinese proverb states, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Rather than always “feed” our students, we can plan activities to ignite a love for discovery, guiding their exploration of the gospel. In keeping with this idea, Elder David A. Bednar teaches, “An answer we discover or obtain through the exercise of faith, typically, is retained for a lifetime. The most important learnings of life are caught—not taught.” On another occasion, Elder Bednar was fielding questions from students in a religion class …

Opinions Of Students Enrolled In An Andalusian Bilingual Program On Bilingualism And The Program Itself, Francisco Ramos

Education Faculty Works

The Regional Ministry of Education of the Autonomous Government of Andalusia, an autonomous community in the South of Spain, has established several bilingual programs to improve language proficiency of its student population. The programs, which undertake second languages as vehicular languages at the classroom, encourage student’s bilingualism, academic development and positive attitudes toward other groups. The following paper examines opinions given by a group of students enrolled in an Andalusian bilingual program about those matters. Students had different positive opinions on bilingualism as well as the program in general; however, they had some doubts over the intellectual and cognitive benefits …

What Contributes To Asian Model Minority Academic Success? An Ecological Perspective, Gulbahar Beckett Dec 2006

What Contributes To Asian Model Minority Academic Success? An Ecological Perspective, Gulbahar Beckett

Gulbahar Beckett

Asians in America are perceived to be model minorities and Asian American students are believed to be exceptional educational achievers. Some believe this is a model minority phenomenon that needs to be demystified as it is a stereotype detrimental to Asian American students social and psychological well-being. Some attribute Asian-American student academic achievement to factors such as parents' and students' attitudes and actions toward schoolwork, economic and ethnic status, human and social capital, family structure, community organization, and cultural and linguistic patterns. Others attribute it to factors such as self-perception, school expectations and organization, students cultural and background knowledge, and …

Feminist Pedagogy: Diversity And Praxis In A University Context, Ann M. Oberhauser Dec 2006

Feminist Pedagogy: Diversity And Praxis In A University Context, Ann M. Oberhauser

Ann Oberhauser

As dynamic today as it was in its first decade, feminist geography continues to undergo significant change. Shifts in institutions of higher education have been fueled by a set of economically driven principles that corresponds to a corporate model of rewards and market-based learning outcomes (Dastree & Sparke, 2000). Feminist geographies challenge these developments in academia through analyses of, for example, hierarchical divisions of labor in the context of changing sociocultural and political-economic structures. This is part and parcel of an effort to transform patriarchal structures in, and the corporatization of, higher education (McDowell, 1990). As we know, feminist course …
