Addressing The Physical Demands Of Caregiving Or Children With Disabilities In Nicaragua: A Quality Improvement Collaboration With Fne International, Grace Price
Entry-Level Occupational Therapy Doctorate - Doctoral Capstone Symposium
Many caregivers of children with disabilities experience chronic pain and related symptoms of cumulative physical trauma. This type of phenomenon is particularly prevalent in developing, low-income countries where environmental accommodations may not be as accessible. A quality improvement program, was conducted as a doctoral capstone project to create resources addressing the physical needs of caregivers of children with disabilities in Nicaragua. Program participants included teachers at a school for children with disabilities and special needs in Nicaragua. The primary project deliverable consisted of conducting an in-person workshop to train the teachers with evidence-based methods for preventing chronic pain and other …

Exploring The Importance Of Sensory Play In Classrooms, Morgan Stark, Hannah Oelke, Sarah Beack, Mackenzie Hauger
Student Academic Conference
This poster is going to discuss the importance of play and dive deeply into sensory play. Sensory play is a crucial aspect of childhood development. Sensory play allows children to explore and engage with the environment through their senses. Sensory play helps children build cognitive skills, fine and gross motor skills, language skills, social and emotional skills, and problem-solving skills. Sensory play also supports special education and students with sensory processing disorders by providing therapeutic benefits. Overall, sensory play is an essential component of a child's development and should be an essential tool that is prioritized in classrooms.

After examination of the Equity Score card for Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) in the Fall of 2023, it was determined that the largest equity gap is among Native American students (which was also representative of the data for the entire state of Minnesota). This research project used the information from the Campus Climate Survey (collected in Spring 2023) to develop a secondary survey that specifically targets Native American students to further supplement the data from the campus climate survey. According to the Minnesota State Equity Scorecard (2023), a 25.4% equity gap among Native American students was identified. This equity …
Dramatic Play: It's Not Just A Kitchen, Ann Sandeen, Alexis Grabau, Hope Sperr, Stephanie Fernandez
Dramatic Play: It's Not Just A Kitchen, Ann Sandeen, Alexis Grabau, Hope Sperr, Stephanie Fernandez
Student Academic Conference
In pretend or dramatic play, children make conscious decisions about what will work for the roles they enact. They have power over the play and make decisions that depend on their imagination and resources. Dramatic play occurs in all classroom areas; however, it is also common to have a dramatic play center in the classroom. The dramatic play center is important because it contributes to various areas of growth and development for young children. These areas of development include gross and fine motor, language and literacy, cognitive, social, and emotional. Teachers have a role in facilitating these areas of growth …

Performance Orientations: A Critical Inquiry With The Mmai In An Urban High School, Kenneth Butler
Thomas C. Hunt Building a Research Community Day
In this study, the Motivation for Mathematics Abbreviated Instrument (MMAI) was administered to students in an urban high school in one Midwestern city. Demographically, the vast majority of these students identify with categories other than white. There is a strong emphasis on college readiness and high expectations within the school’s culture. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of the 168 responses revealed strong fit to a four-factor model. The items within each factor are shown to discriminate between factors, converge together within factors, and to reliably measure their individual factors. This model strongly aligned with the four intended motivational constructs; however, EFA …

SC Upstate Research Symposium
The Hazel Green Academy Revitalization Project is a community service-based project focused on restoring and repurposing the Hazel Green Academy (HGA). Established in 1880, HGA was a residential college-preparatory school located in Eastern Wolfe County, KY. At its height, HGA served not only as a school but also as a source of education and community events. Throughout the years, the academy expanded its facilities and resources to benefit both the students and the community. However, as free public schools emerged in the surrounding area during the 1930s, HGA faced a decline in enrollment. Consequently, HGA struggled for the next few …
James Baldwin's Classroom And What He Can Teach Us About Queer Representation, Matthew Callahan
James Baldwin's Classroom And What He Can Teach Us About Queer Representation, Matthew Callahan
Scholars Week
James Baldwin writes about the importance of the representation of race in school classrooms in his essay A Talk to Teachers. Baldwin's discourse surrounding the representation of race in schools can be extended to the queer community and the importance of representation in the classroom of these marginalized communities. Combining Baldwin's essays and fiction with educational research, I plan on highlighting the importance of representation of marginalized communities in the classroom and the role that educators play in ensuring that all students feel seen in the classroom.

Global Strategies For Addressing Communication Disorders In Justice-Involved Youth, Sophia Martinez, Anne Marie Perrotti, Brooke Baker, Allison Chappell
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Throughout all stages of processing, most juveniles who encounter the justice system demonstrate cognitive-communicative difficulties (CCDs). Empirical evidence reveals that 19-22% of female and 28-38% of male youth offenders, culminating in approximately 50-60% of youth offenders, demonstrate language disorders that require intervention, but most have never received services (Snow et al., 2014; Winstanley et al., 2021). Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are communication experts certified to assess and treat CCDs. While nations abroad recognize the value of SLP involvement in all stages of processing for justice-involved youth (JIY), America lags in utilizing SLPs to improve JIY outcomes and lower youth's risk of …

How To Successfully Implement Practical Functional Assessment In School Settings, Christina Stasi-Arispe
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The Practical Functional Assessment (PFA) and Skill-Based Treatment (SBT) process is a comprehensive system that may benefit students who engage in high levels of challenging behavior by assessing the function of behavior while considering the student’s safety, dignity, and autonomy (Hanley, 2012).
The PFA-SBT process is designed to advance through several cumulative phases to teach the necessary skills that promote student success in multiple contexts within the school or home (Hanley et al., 2014). While not explicitly designed for school settings, the PFA-SBT process is versatile and feasible enough to be implemented by school personnel. This poster will describe the …

. The REO (re-entry option) Program was created in response to an overwhelming need to address severe disciplinary referral patterns and the disproportionate impact on students of color. It is rare that the underlying issue that may have precipitated the undesirable behavior is considered, and even rarer that a referral to clinical staff is the response. In the REO program is an intervention designed to be initiated by a teacher who recognizes or experiences a student in pre-crisis or a student a student who believes they need to a safe place to self-regulate to prevent escalating behavior. The student is …

Introduction: Assessing nutrition knowledge in four-year-olds, a developmental stage marked by limited attention spans and varying comprehension abilities, is challenging with traditional methods. A reliable test is pivotal for establishing a foundation for future health interventions. We evaluated a 13-question nutrition and healthy habits test in Pre-K4 children to assess reliability and sensitivity to detect differences.
Methods: Calculations included Cronbach's alpha, kappa coefficient, McNemar analysis by item, and Bland-Altman plots for test-retest differences. Mixed model regression assessed the questionnaire's sensitivity by sex and association with age. Item response theory (IRT) models were employed, generating latent abilities for students and individual …
