Open ended laboratory or open lab as it is known to the Radiological Technology students is an invaluable tool that the Radiological Technology and Medical Imaging Department provides to help the students become better radiographers. One way to ensure students use this resource is to make it a weekly requirement for some classes, other classes have no weekly requirements or may have a set total hour requirement per semester. We hope to study how utilizing this department resource impacts the students final grades over a multi-year study. Does making it mandatory help the students succeed in improving their skills and …

Once Upon A Time There Was A Mountain Of Paper, Robert P. Zaepfel Jr.
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
Abstract
James Madison University and the Office of Human Resources recently faced a significant challenge in the arena of records management. As the department migrated to an electronic records management system a unique yet complicated situation arose from simultaneously storing unorganized boxes of duplicate paper records. This topic which was presented at the CUPA-HR (College and University Professional Association for Human Resources) Southern Regional Conference last April and again this year at the SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) National Conference will focus on the importance of a strategic and analytical approach to electronic records management, paper removal, sensitive data …

Facilitated Departmental Dialogues Assessment, Kathryn Kinniburgh, Caitlin Powell
Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities
In the fall of 2016, PYSC 600 students consulted with James Madison University’s Office of Access and Inclusion to create assessment efforts for the Facilitated Departmental Dialogues. The Dialogues are the result of a collaborative effort among the Office of Access and Inclusion, Human Resources, and the Provost’s Faculty Diversity Council. They were developed following the 2013-2014 Diversity Task Force to give departments the space to discuss crucial matters of values, diversity, access, and inclusion within the context of their academic unit.
Utilizing notions of the Assessment Cycle, the decision was made, in collaboration with Arthur Dean, Executive Director of …

Cultures Collide! Enhancing The Student Record Through The Lens Of Academic Integrity, Sylvia Kogut, Danielle Palombi, Angela Clark
Publications and Scholarship
Records Management in the Office of the Registrar and the Academic Integrity Office in Library and Learning Services worked together to centralize academic integrity data by creating a customized application in PeopleSoft that stores academic integrity remediation status, sends reminder emails to complete remediation, sends student and faculty status of incomplete remediation and stores breach record(s) and supporting documentation gathered from the investigation process. Records can be accessed by administration and program support staff and can assist in decision making as it pertains to sanctioning and appeals. Next steps include storing a reflective piece from students on what was learned …

Library Scholarship
This presentation at ENUG(ExLibris Users from the Northeast US) discussed several integrations that Binghamton University has accomplished in the 5 months since they went live. New Self Check system from Bintech replacing bibliotheca units. Integrating with the Banner system for Faculty, Student, and staff loads and exporting fines and fee information to Banner. Publishing to Google Scholar, OCLC and other systems to automate updating of content to these services. Also discussed was how to load content into Primo VE.

The Power Of Listening, Reginald Ungos
The Power Of Listening, Reginald Ungos
Southern Collegiate Leadership Conference (2006-2019)
Have you ever sat down to have a conversation with someone and really listened to that person telling you a story or experience? The skills of active listening, understanding another person’s experience, and connecting with others are important in leadership. Attendees will learn the difference between listening and hearing and also increase their awareness of the relationship between listening skills and inclusivity.

•Thinking computationally means conceptualizing a problem and formulating it in a way that a computer can solve it (Wing, 2010). •Computational Thinking (CT) is the third pillar of the scientific method along with theory and experimentation and is a fundamental skill that K-12 students and undergraduates should be equipped with (Wing, 2016; 2006). •Research on CT has only been active the last 10 years and most studies are still at the stage of ideas (Kalelioglu et al., 2016). •The integration of CT aspects in instruction is a widely expanding phenomenon in physics classrooms in the context of higher education, and …

Distance And Its Effect On Betta Aggression, Sydnie Hanson
STAR Program Research Presentations
Betta Splendens are typically known to act very aggressive towards one another, especially between two males. These acts of aggression are shown through flaring of ones fins, chasing and striking opposing Bettas, biting, etc. This experiment shows how distance affects how aggressive male Bettas are with one another

Technical Standards Literacy In Management Education, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips
Technical Standards Literacy In Management Education, Heather A. Howard, Margaret Phillips
Midwest Business Librarian Summit (MBLS)
Industry standards have a significant impact on business as a means to eliminate waste, reduce costs, market products (e.g., for quality, safety, interoperability) and lessen liability (Thompson, 2011). Consequently, an understanding of and ability to use standards, agreed upon practices among interested or vested parties, is a critical workplace competency for those engaged in business and industry. To have a workforce competent in the use of standards, higher education curricula must be developed to integrate standards education at appropriate points within the curriculum. Despite the importance of standards, they are not universally integrated into the college and university curricula. Given …
