Understanding The Concept Of "Inspiring Professors" In Mexico, Ivone Juárez Barco
Student Scholarship
There is only 14% of graduates that have had professors who cared for them as persons, made them excited about learning and encouraged them to pursue their dreams, reported a study from Gallup and Purdue University (2015). The purpose of this qualitative research was to generate a grounded theory to comprehend the concept of “inspiring professor” in Mexico. The question to be answered which originated this research was “what are the characteristics of professors who inspire students?”. Thirty- nine professors were interviewed, 19 of them were identified as “truly inspiring” by students. The findings that distinguish inspiring professors are: they …
Leading Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises In A Difficult Period: What Differentiates Success From Failure, Emmanuel Quansah
Leading Small And Medium-Sized Enterprises In A Difficult Period: What Differentiates Success From Failure, Emmanuel Quansah
Student Scholarship
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the largest engines of job creation and innovation in the U.S. and many parts of the world--yet most of them fail within the first five years of being opened. While the factors that contribute to their failures have been well studied, there is little empirical research about how they survive difficult economic periods. How can SMEs compete and grow in the face of today's complex, turbulent, and fiercely competitive business environment? The aim of this study is to provide a better understanding of how leaders of successful SMEs enable their businesses to survive and …

Crisis Management At General Motors And Toyota: An Analysis Of Gender-Specific Communication And Media Coverage, Roxana Maiorescu
Emerson Authors, Researchers, & Creators
This study applied the genderlect theory to analyze General Motors’ and Toyota’s senior executive crisis communication. The discrepancies in the two companies’ crisis responses were explained through female vs. male-specific communication. Further, the study applied the situational crisis communication theory to analyze the news valence in the media coverage of the crises. While a direct correlation between gender-specific communication and news valence was beyond the purpose of this study, the current analysis can serve as a basis for future research on best crisis communication strategies as informed by gender differences.

A few weeks ago I had the distinct pleasure of spending a day with Dick Motta, a great Aggie who spent a lifetime teaching young men about basketball and life. Motta won at every level of coaching, leading Grace High School to the Idaho state championship, Weber State College to three conference championships, and the NBA Washington Bullets to their only championship, in 1978. He was known as a players’ coach, and his players, including former Utah Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan, were fiercely loyal to him. This from a man who never actually played the game beyond high school.

Real, Intended Change: Business Movements?, Gill Robinson Hickman
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
We are well aware that the economy, environment and organizations in today’s global context are highly interdependent and interconnected. This interdependence contributes to the blurring of lines among business, nonprofit and government entities to the extent that new forms of organization are emerging to tackle socioeconomic and sociopolitical issues that only the political system and social movements confronted in the past.
James MacGregor Burns proclaimed in his groundbreaking book, Leadership, that the effectiveness of leaders “will be tested by the achievement of purpose in the form of real and intended [emphasis added] social change.”1 Burns explained that social …

This study was grounded in agency theory and used survey and archival data. Survey data were collected from 11 participants employed by commercial banks located in Nigeria, using the Multifaceted Leadership Questionnaire. Consciousness Of Connectedness, Greater Purpose And Positive Business, Social And Environmental Outcomes, Joseph Leah
Student Scholarship
Do leaders who define their business in terms of achieving a greater purpose as well as financial profit attain more favorable outcomes in terms of both profit and social or environmental outcomes? When those leaders approach their business with a sense of connectedness (or what we call a "consciousness of connectedness"), do they create an environment in their organizations with higher levels of shared vision, greater compassion and collaboration, and does this in turn lead to positive social and environmental outcomes as well as better economic outcomes? This exploratory research is aimed at investigating how a consciousness of connectedness within …

The construction industry is a major part of the United States economy, but it is also one of the most dangerous and high-risk industries. The industry is currently facing a shortage of effective leadership, and leaders face unique challenges in coordinating multiple teams of subcontractors on projects. The first step in remedying this shortage is to identify the behaviors of an effective construction leader. To address this need, a taxonomy of effective leader behaviors in construction was developed using grounded theory methodology and rated by construction industry subject matter experts. Archival focus group data from 10 focus groups in three …

A Comparison Of Managerial And Leadership Effectiveness Of Veteran And Civilian Developed Leaders In A Civilian Context, John C. Dexter
A Comparison Of Managerial And Leadership Effectiveness Of Veteran And Civilian Developed Leaders In A Civilian Context, John C. Dexter
Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations
Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, there has been an increase in American patriotism that has facilitated a strong commitment of U.S. employers to actively recruit and hire military veterans. These highly publicized employer veteran hiring commitments easily number in the hundreds of thousands, if not millions. However, the commitments to employ veterans does not specify how these veterans will be employed. In fact, there is wide-spread difficulty in translating military training and experience to civilian applications, and there is virtually no empirical support as to whether veterans will be more of less successful in civilian employment than …

Book Review Of: Harvard Business Review's 10 Must Reads: On Leadership, Nadya Chishty-Mujahid
Business Review
It is eminently refreshing to have a prestigious and elite institution such as Harvard University take the trouble to sift through numerous articles of past HBR issues and come up with a compendium that comes across as both engaging and useful. The HBR Press has done this for a number of sub-disciplines of the field of Management, such as ‘Strategy’ and ‘Change,’ for example. However, ‘Leadership’ in view of the challenges it poses can claim the honor of being in a league of its own. The compendium, in spite of its relatively short length, manages to cover a staggering variety …

The Effects Of Is-Bao Implementation And Leadership Performance On Safety Culture In Business Aviation Flight Operations, Christopher Mark Broyhill
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The International Standard, Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO), with a Safety Management System (SMS) as its core element, has been widely accepted by both the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the business aviation industry as the mechanism to create a healthy safety culture among the business aviation operators who have implemented the standard. Scholarly literature, however, has presented leadership as the most important factor in the creation and management of a healthy safety culture in organizations in general and aviation organizations in particular. This study examined and compared the effects of IS-BAO progression and leadership performance on the perceptions of …

The Communication Constitution Of Law Enforcement In North Carolina’S Efforts Against Human Trafficking, Elizabeth Hampton Jeter
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Over the past 20 years, human trafficking has gained international attention and resulted in the creation of anti-trafficking laws in the United States. Politicians, scholars, and organizations have called for more professional efforts against human trafficking and advocated for better education and awareness to identify victims and prosecute traffickers. Local law enforcement is recognized for its ideal position in communities to combat this crime. In 2011, North Carolina implemented a statewide human trafficking training program for law enforcement. This research study examines the communication constitution of law enforcement and the use of power through this training program and as officers …

St. John’s University’s Vincentian Institute for Social Action aims to develop student commitment to social justice through required coursework, international travel, and community service. A strong theoretical foundation ensures that administrators and students are consistently reflecting on the dynamics of power and engaging with community members in an ethical manner. Our framework should continue conversations with the community about the value of foreign language education in their particular regional and global context and encourage students to see themselves as part of a sustainable process. Where many universities and organizations provide volunteer experiences similar in theory, we hope to improve on …

Optimizing Workforce Performance: Perceived Differences Of Army Officer Critical Thinking Talent Across Level Of Education, Richard B. Ayers
Optimizing Workforce Performance: Perceived Differences Of Army Officer Critical Thinking Talent Across Level Of Education, Richard B. Ayers
Dissertations
The U.S. Army’s operating environment continues to become increasingly complex and unpredictable, where U.S. technological advantage continues to erode. The complexities stem from the Army’s doctrinal assumption that the future operating environment is unknown and constantly changing (Department of the Army [DA], 2014a). Diminishing technological advantage results in more reliance on soldiers’ cognitive capability, and less on high technology weapons systems (McMaster, 2015).
A review of military literature shows extensive research on the importance of Army leaders to be talented critical thinkers (Fischer, Spiker, & Riedel, 2008, 2009; Gerras, 2008; Thomas & Gentzler, 2013). Human capital literature reveals many college …
