The Impact Of Gender, Ethnicity, School Setting, And Experience On Student Leadership: Does It Really Matter?, Barry Z. Posner Jan 2014

The Impact Of Gender, Ethnicity, School Setting, And Experience On Student Leadership: Does It Really Matter?, Barry Z. Posner

Management & Entrepreneurship

This research examined how gender, ethnicity, school setting, and experience influenced students' leadership practices. Significant differences were found in how student leaders behaved on the basis of these variables. However, further analyses suggested that these differences did not significantly influence the effectiveness of student leaders. That is, the most effective student leaders engaged in the five leadership practices more than the less effective leaders, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or school setting. The impact of these findings for both assessing student leaders as well as for developing their leadership capabilities is discussed, along with ideas for future studies.

Effectively Measuring Student Leadership, Barry Z. Posner Oct 2012

Effectively Measuring Student Leadership, Barry Z. Posner

Management & Entrepreneurship

With a worldwide sample of students (N = 77, 387), this paper reviews and analyses the psychometric properties of the Student Leadership Practices Inventory [1]. Modest to strong internal reliability coefficients are found across a number of different dimensions. Predictive validity of the instrument is supported, with the instrument being able to differentiate between effective and ineffective leaders using both self-reported and observer (constituent) data. Few significant differences are found on the basis of respondent gender, ethnicity, nationality, or institutional level (high school versus college). Implications for developing student leaders and future research are offered.

Lead Through Resources, Terri L. Griffith Feb 2012

Lead Through Resources, Terri L. Griffith

Management & Entrepreneurship

The global economic situation pushes us all to make do with less. Many leaders are grappling with years of slow growth with continued high expectations for performance. The pressure is on to lead to the "next big thing," without more people or supporting resources. Leaders are challenged to squeeze water out of a rock- and it's a rock that has been squeezed for a long time. I do see hope, however. As Jim Kouzes notes: Challenge is the greatest opportunity for greatness!

A Longitudinal Study Examining Changes In Students' Leadership Behavior, Barry Z. Posner

Management & Entrepreneurship

This study investigated the impact of a leadership development program in students' first year with the subsequent leadership behaviors of those students in their senior year. Significant changes were reported in the frequency of engaging in leadership behaviors from freshman to senior years. No differences were found on the basis of gender. In addition, significant differences in leadership behaviors were found between seniors who had participated in the leadership development program with a control group of seniors who had not participated. Results supported the impact of a formal leadership program upon students' leadership development.

Be Leaders. Do Leadership., Barry Z. Posner May 2008

Be Leaders. Do Leadership., Barry Z. Posner

Management & Entrepreneurship

Too much of the time, business schools teach students about leadership, about leadership theories and concepts, about social psychological concepts as "applied" to leadership. Learning about leadership is not the same as learning to be a leader. We should be teaching our students to be leaders.

We Lead From The Inside Out, Barry Z. Posner, James M. Kouzes Jan 2008

We Lead From The Inside Out, Barry Z. Posner, James M. Kouzes

Management & Entrepreneurship

This article makes the argument that becoming an effective leader is an inside-out process. Leaders, through self examination, realize their passions, values, and the legacy that gives meaning to their life. Leading a life that is congruent with one's personal believes and values gives leaders the authenticity and credibility that their constituents desire. Once leaders have identified their values, they have a greater sense of stability, confidence and peace. Without firm core beliefs, a leader is perceived as inconsistent and untrustworthy and unlikely to be willingly followed. Answering the internal question "Who am I?" is crucial for leaders.

Virtual Study Groups: A Challenging Centerpiece For "Working Adult" Management Education, Gregory B. Northcraft, Terri L. Griffith, Mark A. Fuller Jan 2006

Virtual Study Groups: A Challenging Centerpiece For "Working Adult" Management Education, Gregory B. Northcraft, Terri L. Griffith, Mark A. Fuller

Management & Entrepreneurship

Groups and teams are critical to modern organizations, and consequently management education has incorporated groups as a centerpiece of both content (the study of group process) and process (the use of study groups and group projects). Unfortunately, working-adult educational programs appear to have yet to take an important final step - acknowledging that study groups often interact virtually and then providing support for virtual study group interaction. We provide both theory and data concerning the use of study groups as virtual teams. We believe that there are important benefits to be gained when study groups make educated decisions about the …

Prelude To Virtual Groups: Leadership And Technology In Semi-Virtual Groups, Terri L. Griffith, David K. Meader Jan 2004

Prelude To Virtual Groups: Leadership And Technology In Semi-Virtual Groups, Terri L. Griffith, David K. Meader

Management & Entrepreneurship

A study of 76 more and less virtual investment clubs examines the relationships between communication technologies used for club business (from face-to-face to more highly technologically enabled), group leadership role behaviors, and club portfolio value. The results are interesting, with more and less virtual clubs benefiting from different forms of leadership behaviors. Clubs using fewer technologies seem to benefit from a greater focus on socioemotional role (communication) behaviors, while the opposite is found in clubs using more technologies. The effect for procedural role behaviors (agenda setting and the like) appears to run in the opposite direction: clubs using more technologies …

Exploring The Relationship Between Learning And Leadership, Lillas Brown, Barry Z. Posner Nov 2001

Exploring The Relationship Between Learning And Leadership, Lillas Brown, Barry Z. Posner

Management & Entrepreneurship

This paper investigates how two important research streams, namely learning and leadership, might be related with one another. Responses on the learning tactics inventory and leadership practices inventory are compared for a managerial sample (n = 312). Results indicate that more active and versatile learners subsequently consider themselves more frequently involved and engaged in leadership behaviors. Implications for transformational learning and leadership theories are explored, as well as thoughts about how the development of leadership competencies may be enhanced and affected by various learning techniques.

A Leadership Development Instrument For College Students, Barry Z. Posner, Barbara Brodsky

Management & Entrepreneurship

Few people question the importance of leadership in organizational effectiveness, even though there is little agreement about how to develop leaders. Nevertheless, nearly every college and university has established some sort of leadership education program for students (Hirschorn, 1988), demonstrating a belief that leadership can be learned and enhanced through an educational process.

Leadership Practices: An Alternative To The Psychological Perspective, Barry Z. Posner, James M. Kouzes

Management & Entrepreneurship

Leaving aside these important arguments for the moment, there is ample evidence of a viable construct called leadership and attempts to understand and measure this phenomenon are worthwhile. In this paper we present first a brief review of our qualitative efforts to develop a conceptual framework for understanding leadership. Described in more detail are the empirical efforts utilized in developing a reliable and valid instrument to measure this leadership model.

When Are Leaders At Their Best?, James M. Kouzes, Barry Z. Posner

Management & Entrepreneurship

During the last 18 months, we have asked more than 300 managers and executives to describe one leadership experience in their careers when they though they had performed at their personal best; when everything seemed to come together an they did the very best they had ever done as a leader of a group of people.
