We have a unique gift in the United States, and that gift is freedom. The Declaration of Independence guarantees all of us “certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
This means we are free to pursue our lives and our vocations in any way that makes sense to us. Freedom is what makes America so great. What we do with our freedom is up to us. It is our choice. Freedom is our grandest opportunity and should be protected, especially in challenging times.

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer And A Four-Year-Old: Lessons For Leadership & Life, Connie Reimers-Hild
Connie I Reimers-Hild, PhD, CPC
Last week while I was in the shower, my four-year-old daughter, Raquel, walked into the bathroom and asked me an interesting question. “Mom, why doesn’t anyone like Rudolph’s shiny red nose?” My daughter was supposed to be in bed sleeping. I am 99% sure she was lying in bed reflecting on her day.
Many nights I have quietly checked on her before going to bed myself only to find her talking to herself while she makes vivid hand gestures and motions. On this particular evening, her talk and gestures must have focused on Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. After thinking about …

Leading Amidst Competing Technical And Institutional Demands: Revisiting Selznick’S Conception Of Leadership, Marya Besharov, Rakesh Khurana
Leading Amidst Competing Technical And Institutional Demands: Revisiting Selznick’S Conception Of Leadership, Marya Besharov, Rakesh Khurana
Marya Besharov
This chapter explores how Selznick’s approach to leadership can inform contemporary organizational theory and research. Drawing on Selznick’s writing in Leadership in Administration and related works, we characterize organizations as simultaneously technical entities pursuing economic goals and value-laden entities pursuing non-economic goals arising from their members and their role in society. These two aspects of organizations are deeply intertwined and in continual tension with one another, and the essential task of leadership is to uphold both – protecting and promoting values while also meeting technical imperatives. To do so, leaders establish a common purpose that includes values and ideals not …
Effectively Measuring Student Leadership, Barry Z. Posner
Effectively Measuring Student Leadership, Barry Z. Posner
Management & Entrepreneurship
With a worldwide sample of students (N = 77, 387), this paper reviews and analyses the psychometric properties of the Student Leadership Practices Inventory [1]. Modest to strong internal reliability coefficients are found across a number of different dimensions. Predictive validity of the instrument is supported, with the instrument being able to differentiate between effective and ineffective leaders using both self-reported and observer (constituent) data. Few significant differences are found on the basis of respondent gender, ethnicity, nationality, or institutional level (high school versus college). Implications for developing student leaders and future research are offered.
An Ethnographic Account Of Leadership, Power And Change, Ray Gordon
An Ethnographic Account Of Leadership, Power And Change, Ray Gordon
Ray Gordon
The paper provides a genealogical account of a police organization’s attempt to implement what senior officers in its behavioural change division described as a dispersed leadership (Bryman, 1996; Gordon, 2002) strategy. I describe the organization and provide a detailed account of the dynamics that emerge as groups and individuals who historically held positions of power found themselves reporting to one of many designated leaders. The account depicts how the organization’s dispersion of leadership, while on the surface represents a new and successful endeavour, is rendered problematic by the organization’s historical constitution of power.
Opportunities And Challenges Of Shifting Identities For Women Leaders In Higher Education, Susan R. Madsen
Opportunities And Challenges Of Shifting Identities For Women Leaders In Higher Education, Susan R. Madsen
Susan R. Madsen
It is clear that there are differing cultures, contexts, and complexities among the various groups within higher education, creating a “great divide” on many campuses across the globe. This includes the divide between current faculty and faculty who have transitioned into administration. This panelist has conducted in-depth research on the lived experiences of women university presidents in developing the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies throughout their lives that are required for success leadership in higher education. Within this larger study, data were collected, using the phenomenological research approach, on the educational backgrounds, employment positions, career paths, and related struggles and …

Individual Resistance To Change, Jeffrey C. Sandusky
Individual Resistance To Change, Jeffrey C. Sandusky
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines individual resistance to change and concludes that it is a constantly evolving process with many contributing factors. Defining resistance to change is a challenge within its own right. To account for the actions involved in change resistance is an even more complex undertaking. In this research, resistance to change is examined and explained using the influences of goals, participation, leadership effectiveness, and communication. These factors are expressed as the composition of what makes an individual resist or accept a change. Each of the four elements of resistance to change are examined independently and then synthesized into a …
The Power Of Questions, Ken Margolies
The Power Of Questions, Ken Margolies
Ken Margolies
[Excerpt] “When you are tempted to make a statement, ask a question instead.” That valuable advice came from Fred Ross, Sr., the veteran organizer who was a mentor to the legendary Cesar Chavez, a founder of the United Farm Workers union. Ross was teaching the power of questions to provoke people to action, gather needed information, share knowledge, and focus their attention. Stewards would be wise to include this tactic in the chest of tools they use when advocating for their co-workers.
