Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Pakistan’s growth rate during the last five years has averaged about three percent and, in per capita terms, has stagnated at almost one percent. Living standards of the middle- and lower-income groups have been threatened by double-digit inflation, weak growth income, shortages of energy, deteriorating security of life and property and a lurching sense of despondency. The best stimulus to address these problems is to encourage investment, expand production and incomes and raise the demand for employment. Unfortunately, the trends in investment – public, private and foreign – are negative. Besides law and order, widening fiscal deficits, red tape and …

Economic development has shifted from location-oriented business models towards a more all-encompassing model that recognizes the advancement of human capital or intellectual property as continuously increasing in value. This microcosmic characteristic of development extends to aid in the growth of society as a whole. The Arts and Culture attract a demographic of inspired and motivated people to the area. It results in the development of the society surrounding art venues. The general population will always seek out entertainment, by installing a venue of artistic expression in South Providence that will motivate the community and propel development. Broad Street Business Inventory, Michelle Abramowitz, Kelsie Foley, Jackie Melendez, Arnold Robinson

Business

Over previous year, SWAP had compiled an impressive inventory of existing businesses on Broad Street. In addition, partner organizations such as the City and Community Works had other sets of information. The first step in an update was to have a team of RWU students update and expand the inventory. As they did this, they also undertake community research, identification of key issues on the street under the direction of SWAP’s professional staff. This more complete inventory can be the basis to identify key segments of the business community (restaurants, communication, clubs, retail, auto repair, etc.).

There are a number of potential positioning strategies. The two which make the most sense for the EBCH are to “position the EBCH away from others in the category” and to “position the EBCH as unique.” These strategies have the advantage of setting the EBCH apart from the other organizations that address homelessness. Occupying its own “position” in the minds of potential and current donors is not only an effective communications/marketing strategy but also a less costly one because it avoids head-to-head competition and comparisons.

Philanthropic Innovation And Creative Capitalism: A Historical And Comparative Perspective On Social Entrepreneurship And Corporate Social Responsibility, Shruti Rana Jan 2013

Philanthropic Innovation And Creative Capitalism: A Historical And Comparative Perspective On Social Entrepreneurship And Corporate Social Responsibility, Shruti Rana

Faculty Scholarship

Each generation creates its own philanthropic bodies, with novel structures promising both increased sustainability and efficiency. From the seventeenth-century financial imperialists to today’s internet entrepreneurs, innovation, wealth, and philanthropy have moved in tandem, shaping one another and resulting in new philanthropic forms.

The most recent of these emerging entities is the “for-profit charity,” which relies on market profits and market principles to replace donations and to maximize its impact. Current philanthropic literature praises these market-based structures as revolutionary innovations that enhance long-term sustainability, and the focus of legal reforms falls along these lines. Yet the legal literature fails to fully …

The Factors That Influence Merchants’ Likeliness To Continue Business: A Study Of Georgetown, South Carolina, Monica B. Fine, Paul Clark Jan 2013

The Factors That Influence Merchants’ Likeliness To Continue Business: A Study Of Georgetown, South Carolina, Monica B. Fine, Paul Clark

AMTP Proceedings 2013

Loss of businesses to surrounding areas has escalated in the past decade, promoting an examination of factors causing business defection from the city of Georgetown, South Carolina. Kotler (1969) warned that customer retention is more important than identifying new prospects. If the customer’s satisfaction levels fall below completely satisfied, there is a risk of customer defection. This issue is important because the “purpose of a business is to create and keep customers” (Kotler 1969, p. 2). Therefore, understanding what dissatisfies a customer is just as important as understanding what satisfies a customer. The degree to which cities are vulnerable to …

The History Of The Investment Tax Credit, Rachael I. Lambert Jan 2013

The History Of The Investment Tax Credit, Rachael I. Lambert

Theses and Dissertations

A tax credit is an incentive for businesses and individuals, which allows them to reduce their tax obligation. Federal and state governments grant tax credits in areas such as employment and the environment. An investment tax credit (ITC) allows businesses and individuals to reduce their tax obligation when they venture into new businesses and developments. It is natural for businesses and individuals to invest for continued growth. If the economy is in a decline, however, investments may drop by businesses and individuals. In hard economic times, the federal and state governments provide the ITC incentive to stimulate economic growth. The …

The Role Of Empathy In The Benefits Sought From Volunteering, David J. Burns

Business Graduate Employability: Where Are We Going Wrong?, Denise Jackson

Research outputs 2013

Persistent gaps in certain non-technical skills in business graduates continue to impact on organisational performance and global competitiveness. Despite business school’s best efforts in developing non-technical skills, widely acknowledged as fundamental to graduate employability, there has been considerably less attention to measuring skill outcomes and even less on their subsequent transfer to the workplace. It appears stakeholders are assuming transfer occurs automatically in graduates, neglecting the influence of learning program, learner and workplace characteristics on this complex process and its potential impact on graduate employability. This paper unpacks the concept of transfer and proposes a model of graduate employability which incorporates …

Student Perceptions Of The Importance Of Employability Skill Provision In Business Undergraduate Programs, Denise Jackson Jan 2013

Student Perceptions Of The Importance Of Employability Skill Provision In Business Undergraduate Programs, Denise Jackson

Research outputs 2013

Studies examining student perceptions of employability skill development in business undergraduate programs are limited. Assurance of student buy-in is important to ensure learners engage with skill provision; to enable them to articulate their capabilities to potential employers and to facilitate the transfer of acquired skills. This study examines 1019 students’ perceptions of the importance of employability skill development, the relative importance of skills and the influence of certain demographic/background characteristics. Findings indicate undergraduates value skill development, most particularly communication and team-working, and some significant variations in importance ratings. Alignment with other stakeholder perceptions and the influence of context are discussed.

"Why Do We Have To Learn This Stuff?" Revising Or Developing A Course Using Essential Questions, Michael E. Cafferky

Faculty Works

This paper explores how the concept of “essential questions” can be used as a structural tool for revising or developing a business course such that active learning and student engagement are fostered. The concept of essential questions is different from and similar to the Socratic method. The relationship between essential questions and other course elements is discussed. An example is provided for how this approach was used in a business ethics course taught from a biblical worldview.
