Nonprofit Sector Issues and Trends

Nonprofit organizations are often on the frontlines of crisis, serving as a critical partner to government in sustaining our community safety net and quality of life. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many local nonprofits are experiencing increased demands for services, yet have been hindered or completely cut off from responding due to stay at home orders, revenue loss, and physical distancing.

In an effort to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on local nonprofits’ ability to meet their communities’ needs, The University of San Diego’s Nonprofit Institute has been surveying nonprofit leaders since March 2020.

This report …

Purdue University Press Books

Advancing U.S. Latino Entrepreneurship examines business formation and success among Latinos by identifying arrangements that enhance entrepreneurship and by understanding the sociopolitical contexts that shape entrepreneurial trajectories. While it is well known that Latinos make up one of the largest and fastest growing populations in the U.S., Latino-owned businesses are now outpacing this population growth and the startup business growth of all other demographic groups in the country.

The institutional arrangements shaping business formation are no level playing field. Minority entrepreneurs face racism and sexism, but structural barriers are not the only obstacles that matter; there are agentic barriers and …

Although approaches to clear writing such as scrutinizing every word and sentence for meaning and purpose and learning to listen to feedback are common features of excellent writing across all disciplines, there are also differences between writing within different domains. Even within the business domain there may be differences in writing approaches between economists for …

Doing Business In America: A Jewish History, Hasia Diner Dec 2018

Doing Business In America: A Jewish History, Hasia Diner

Purdue University Press Book Previews

American and Jewish historians have long shied away from the topic of Jews and business. Avoidance patterns grew in part from old, often negative stereotypes that linked Jews with money, and the perceived ease and regularity with which they found success with money, condemning Jews for their desires for wealth and their proclivities for turning a profit. A new, dauntless generation of historians, however, realizes that Jewish business has had and continues to have a profound impact on American culture and development, and patterns of immigrant Jewish exploration of business opportunities reflect internal, communal, Jewish-cultural structures and their relationship to …

The Lego System Makes Co-Creation Painless For The Lego Group, Seth A. Peacock

Undergraduate Research Posters

Co-creation is using consumers to help innovate with a product. While the methodology of co-creation has been extensively researched, different products’ relative suitability to co-creation is rarely examined. This research examines the LEGO Group’s co-creation efforts including LEGO Ideas, LEGO Factory, LEGO Mindstorms NXT, and LEGO Architecture. These programs’ reliance on LEGO’s versatility, modularity, adult fan community, and fan LEGO building expertise are evaluated and compared to other firm’s co-creation efforts. The adult LEGO community’s custom LEGO creations, including fan-designed and fan-sold sets, commissioned sculptures, and LEGO robotics development all constitute consumer innovation independent of the firm; the LEGO Group …

Ethnic Diversity Of Boards Of U.S. Companies: Business Sustainability And Group Dynamics, Saajan Sappal Jan 2016

Ethnic Diversity Of Boards Of U.S. Companies: Business Sustainability And Group Dynamics, Saajan Sappal

Undergraduate Research Posters

Ethnic minorities are significantly underrepresented on the Board of Directors of large US firms. White males comprise nearly twice the proportion of directorships of Fortune 1000 companies as they do the total US population. Ethnic diversity in corporate governance is valued as an asset per two prominent theories: Resource Dependence theory and Agency theory. However, Ethnic diversity on the Board of Directors can also impair the group process per Status theory and constraints such as tokenism and marginalization. This paper is aimed at developing both a theoretical and empirical understanding of the value of ethnic minorities on the Board of …

The uncertainty, dynamism, volatility, and impermanence of modern commercial environments have shifted the foundations of business success and survival.

Key factors that now affect firm performance and determine sustainability include knowledge creation, knowledge management, uncertainty management, organizational intelligence, and supply chain administration. The authors propose an analytical approach to identifying and enhancing these critical factors, and they describe ways for firms to exploit their strengths and minimize or compensate for …

Under The Rust Belt Revealing Innovation In Northeast Ohio, Thomas Bacher Oct 2014

Under The Rust Belt Revealing Innovation In Northeast Ohio, Thomas Bacher

University of Akron Press Publications

Many areas of the Midwest faced economic challenges after large manufacturing industries, that once operated with three shifts, cut back or went out of business completely. Northeast Ohio was not immune to this downturn and experienced major declines in its population base and tax revenue streams. How could the area recover? This work looks at the post-manufacturing business climate in Northeast Ohio whose major cities, Cleveland, Akron, and Youngstown, were faced with re-inventing themselves and their industrial bases. Using an interview format, the book details how entrepreneurs saw opportunities to develop services and products in the area. Their stories illuminate …

Experiencing Business In A Whole New World, Usu Jon M. Huntsman School Of Business, Trevor Andersen

My Go Global experience was something I'll never forget, and quite honestly, it has been all I could talk about coming back to school. To visit top-tier businesses in other countries, visit a country’s most sacred ruin, and finish it all up with a mini internship as a micro-finance consultant, was one of the best experiences of my life. There really is no other program that can give a cultural exposure, open up your eyes to global business, and help you see what value you can add to this world than the Go Global Program.
