Trends In Manufacturing Inventory Efficiency: 1980-2013, Ahren Johnston
Trends In Manufacturing Inventory Efficiency: 1980-2013, Ahren Johnston
Atlantic Marketing Journal
This study was motivated by Cooke’s 2013 article questioning the inclusion on inventory carrying costs in CSCMP’s Annual State of Logistics Report since it is based on interest rates. This paper explores that question more fully and goes on to look at trends in inventory efficiency based on inventory turnover for U.S. manufacturing firms. Results of the study reveal that there has been a level trend between 1980 and 2013 after firm size is controlled for. Since these results are contradictory to those obtained by looking at inventory carrying costs as a percent of GDP, they suggest the need for …
The Impact Of Individual Learning On Electronic Health Record Routinization: An Empirical Study, Michele Lynn Heath
The Impact Of Individual Learning On Electronic Health Record Routinization: An Empirical Study, Michele Lynn Heath
ETD Archive
Since the passage of the HITECH Act, adoption of electronic health records (EHR) has increased significantly EHR refers to an electronic version of a patient’s medical history. The adoption of EHR has potential to reduce medical errors, duplication of testing, and delays in treatment. However, current literature indicates that implementation of EHR is not resulting in the automatic routinization of EHR. Routinization refers to the notion that truly successful technological innovations are no longer perceived as being new or out-of-the-ordinary. The complexity of EHRs allow individual users to use these systems at different levels of sophistication. Research shows that healthcare …

Venezuela Public Health Issue, Luke Vargas
Venezuela Public Health Issue, Luke Vargas
Global Public Health
While every country around the world faces a form of public health issues, the issues that the country of Venezuela faces are different. Their public health problem is not a disease that can be solved by science, or a cure. It’s a problem that can only be solved by the people within the county itself. The country of Venezuela now lacks the proper medical supplies needed to help cure diseases and normal vaccinations, and the only ones to blame is their government. Because their government has now refused to pay their debts to the surrounding countries they have now lost …

Task-Representation Fit’S Impact On Cognitive Effort In The Context Of Decision Timeliness And Accuracy: A Cognitive Fit Perspective, Dinko Bacic, Raymond M. Henry
Task-Representation Fit’S Impact On Cognitive Effort In The Context Of Decision Timeliness And Accuracy: A Cognitive Fit Perspective, Dinko Bacic, Raymond M. Henry
Business Faculty Publications
Cognitive fit theory (CFT) has emerged as a dominant theoretical lens to explain decision performance when using data representations to solve decision making tasks. Despite the apparent consensus regarding cognitive effort's theoretical criticality in CFT-based research, researchers have made limited attempts to evaluate and empirically measure cognitive effort and its impact. Unlike prior CFT-based literature that has theorized only the role of cognitive effort, in our empirical study, we presented information and tasks to 68 participants and directly measured cognitive effort to understand how cognitive fit impacts it and how it impacts decision performance. We found that 1) cognitive fit …
The Political Landscape: A New Approach To Understanding Corporate Political Activity, Michael Greiner
The Political Landscape: A New Approach To Understanding Corporate Political Activity, Michael Greiner
Wayne State University Dissertations
Despite the fact that Corporate Political Activity (CPA) is an area of research generating increasing interest among both academics and practitioners, there has been relatively little empirical research in the field, and what research has been done has often been inconclusive. In this dissertation, I argue that prior research has been hampered by a theory that relies upon a market analysis to understand this non-market activity. Instead, I describe and test a model of CPA in which business interests negotiate three factors in their efforts to convince politicians to support their positions: the ideology of the politician, the politician's relationships, …
Exploring The Intersection Of Digital Virtual Consumption And Family Rituals, Jenna M. Drenten, Linda Tuncay Zayer
Exploring The Intersection Of Digital Virtual Consumption And Family Rituals, Jenna M. Drenten, Linda Tuncay Zayer
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Since Rook (1985) first described important linkages between rituals and consumer behavior, scholars have examined consumer rituals from the perspectives of the individual consumer, marketers, marketing exchanges, and cultural institutions. New modes of communication and expression (e.g., digital media), and globalization calls for a thorough understanding of the consumption-related ritual topics, and what areas they should explore in the future. In this paper, we systematically review articles in the top marketing and consumer behavior journals to provide an overview of the current composition of ritual scholarship, and of prospective areas for future research. In so doing, we hope to categorize …

Access to higher education for women has dramatically increased in the United States during the past 50 years. Female college graduates have reversed the figures and gone from being outnumbered by their male counterparts 3 to 2 in the 1970s, to now outnumbering male college graduates 3 to 2. Women also graduate from masters and doctoral programs at a higher rate than men.
However, increases in the number of women obtaining college and advanced degrees has not translated to comparable representation in faculty positions or leadership roles in higher education. This lack of women in leadership positions, as well as …

Small And Medium Enterprises' Risk Exposures And Mitigation Approaches In Nigeria, Joshua Solomon Adeyele, Olubunmi Florence Osemene
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
Risks militating against small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have been on the increase due to how risks mitigations are conducted by the owners/operators. Although thorough understanding of businesses undertaken by the owners of SMEs enables them to have a clear picture of risks affecting their businesses so as to act in proactive manner in order to mitigate or avoid the impending risks. To assess the risk exposures of SMEs, a random sampling technique was used to select 209 SMEs within Lagos and Benin City. Both descriptive and inferential statistics such as Phi and Gamma were used to analyse the data …

Duratable Enterprises Inc., Spencer D. Evans, Hal B. Heaton
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
In late 2017, DuraTable received a number of unsolicited inquiries regarding its interest in selling out in a going private transaction, mostly from private equity firms. Since the chairman of the board and founder, Gary Reynolds, was approaching retirement age and the largest single shareholder who had provided the seed capital to start the company was over 80 years old, Mr. Reynolds was willing to consider a sale and provided information to four or five of them to prepare bids. DuraTable was a closely held company with relatively few individuals holding the vast majority of shares. As such, DuraTable’s shares …

From Well-Heeled To Tip-Toed, Shoe-Shine To Shoe-Lace: Monopolistic Competition And Product Differentiation In Men's Footwear, Vishal Kumar, Satish Y. Deodhar Ph.D.
International Review of Business and Economics
For many decades, the only branded footwear Indians knew was Bata. After years of economic liberalization; however, one finds many local, national, and international firms jostling for customer attention by producing various types of branded footwear. In fact, India has now emerged as the second largest producer of footwear in the world. The Indian footwear market can be described today as a stylized case of a monopolistically competitive market. In this study, we focus our attention on men’s formal shoes which are differentiated by variations in many attributes such as heel, toes, colour, surface, laces, buckles and brands. Invoking hedonic …

Duplicity In Alternative Marketing Communications, Cristina Nistor, Taylan Yalcin, Ekin Pehlivan
Business Faculty Articles and Research
In the past couple of decades, following the advancements in communication technologies, alternative marketing communications such as consumer generated content, influencer marketing and native advertising, have emerged as a viable and gainful tactic. These alternative marketing communications blur the boundaries between the roles of consumer and marketer. The possibility of duplicity and deception in marketing relationships is fueled by the ambiguity of these roles and the lack of clarity in persuasion knowledge when alternative marketing communications are utilized. In this paper, we illustrate the various types of duplicity in marketing relationships that use alternative marketing communications. We adopt a conceptual …

Source Of Wealth Based 4es Segmentation Of Private Banking Clients, Robert Armstrong, Ron Chung, Alice Chung
Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics
The understanding of private banks (i.e., banks that serve private clients rather than privately held banks) is limited, partly due to its “private” nature. To get an initial understanding of the segmentation of clients using private banking, this paper tracks the evolution of the private banking business from when it was first established in Europe to the private banking needs of entrepreneurs of the “new economy” and from Asia. Specifically, this paper evaluates how private banking services can be effectively segmented based on client behavior.

An Assessment Of Small Business Use Of Risk Management: An Argument For The Adoption Of An Enterprise Risk Management Approach, Christine T. Berry, Ronald L. Berry
Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics
Businesses of all sizes, types, and structure face a multitude of risks. This paper focuses on small businesses and their approach to risk management and provides an argument for the adoption of an enterprise risk management program. An assessment instrument was administered to over 200 small businesses through a detailed interview process to determine understanding and approaches to risk management. Little evidence was found to indicate that small business owners fully utilize and reap the benefits of risk management. Additionally, it appears small business owners do not seek out information related to risk management other than through the insurance agents …
Information Security Breaches, Internal Controls And Related Legislation, Teresa K. Land Phd, Rita C. Jones Phd
Information Security Breaches, Internal Controls And Related Legislation, Teresa K. Land Phd, Rita C. Jones Phd
Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics
In 2002, the passage of Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) was supposed to protect the public by changing the reporting requirements in financial statement audits. Management and auditors were to attest to the existence and effectiveness of internal controls over financial data, and that would supposedly “fix” the problem. Recent disclosures of business practices at two companies who were victims of cybercrimes—Target and JPMorgan Chase—bring to light a lack of proper internal controls over the financial data they collect. This paper discusses information security, internal controls, and SOX, as well as concerns of why current internal control policies are not effective in securing …

The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence And Work-Family Balance, Thembi Aquil, Ingrid Rader, Sandy S. Weiss, Russell Clayton
Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics
Organizations benefit when employees are adept at understanding both the emotions of self and others, and how that understanding helps to successfully manage their personal and professional commitments. Given the characteristics of emotional intelligence (EI) and those maintaining a satisfactory work family balance (WFB), a positive relationship between EI and WFB was hypothesized. This quantitative study examined survey results from 189 adults working at least 20 hours per week to reveal a positive relationship between EI and WFB, and specifically EI and job performance.

Quick Service Restaurant Consumer Behaviours: Moderating Effect Of Gender, Kevin Mason, Stephen Jones, James Walton
Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics
The moderating effect of gender on quick service restaurant (QSR) consumer post-dining behaviors may be significant for a QSR’s success. This study investigates gender behavioral differences in QSR consumer behaviors. Specifically, structured survey of QSR consumers were used to examine gender differences in QSR choice criteria, food selection, post dining satisfaction levels, and dining loyalty. The results indicate that gender is a moderating factor on consumers' restaurant choice criteria, the healthiness of food choices, dining satisfaction levels and future restaurant loyalty intentions. Implications of the findings and QSR success strategies are discussed.
